Weird Injury...

The manager of my gym and her husband wanted to work out with me. Fine. As long as you do as I say. They agree. We had 3 days together until the weekend (th-Sat) which we worked out Legs (thurs), Arms (fri) and Calves/abs/obliques (sat).

I come in today (Monday), and the husband’s right forearm is swolen and (for lack of a better word) more solid than his left one (It’s got the solidness of a cramp, but no pain apparently). In addition, the right forearm also had a bump of some sort on the underside…a big knot, if I had to guess.

They say they did nothing but rest Sunday, and it just seems strange to have this reaction to the workout.

Thur we did RDL’s, Bulgarian Squats, GHR’s, and Leg Extensions…

Fri we did Chinups, Seated DB curls, and low cable curls. THen for Tris we did DB skullcrushers, 1-arm cable pressdowns and…something else I don’t remember right now.

Sat was standing/seated calves and holds then Leg lifts (they had a flat surface), holds, scissors, then oblique work.

Maybe someone can explain what happened here because I can’t see how any of the exercise selection could produce that problem.

Any ideas?

I’d say examine for an insect bite. Seems like an odd thing to blame on training.

Have him get it checked out immediately. Could be a clot or some other kind of vascular compromise. Best case scenario, he pays a co-pay to be told its a cramp. Don’t ask about a worse-case scenario. Call him and have him get it checked out today (I’m a physical therapist).

Mike

hes using your training routine to cover up on his all out beat off weekend.

on a more serious note, he probably either got biten by something or ate something that resulted in an allergic reaction.

I dunno man, I think I’m with the guy above you on this one. That sounds potentially serious and it’s probably better safe than sorry. I am not one to run to the doctor for every little discomfort that comes along either, but that’s pretty wierd.

Definately not an insect bite…it felt like a major knot in the muscle, but as I’m no doctor I did what everyone recommended and suggested a doctor.

To which they replied: “We put some medicine on it and we think it’s getting better.”

Now…get this…the TRAINERS at the gym say that this…affliction…is due to my training methods! WTH???

In case you were wondering, I’m currently NOT in a western culture country at the moment.

Do you know this from experience E? If so, maybe you need some female attention!

Unless your “training methods” include cracking him on the forearm with a tire iron this is of course preposterous. Depending on which non western culture country you’re in you may find it an impossible task disabusing them of this notion.

The fact of the matter is you may be right. I’m working in China (a light skinned/blue eyed guy, nonetheless), and quite frankly, I think the other trainers are a little intimidated or feel threatened by my hanging out with the manager and her hubby.

Now, to be fair…all the other trainers are bigger than me, stronger than me (but not by much, to be honest), but have been locked into their ways for a while. (I"m getting bigger and stronger too…thanks to hard training and the Anabolic Diet…lol).

Just wait until I put the 2 of them through Total Body Workouts with GPP work on off days…that should get the crap talk up and moving again. =P

All that being said he may have injured himself while you were training him, but that’s not the same as your training causing the injury. You would think guys that were able to make decent progress would know better so maybe it is a symbolic competition with the capitalist intruder after all ;-D .

BTW, what, pray tell, are you doing in China? I saw that you’re a teacher so I would figure you’re teaching huh?

About “capitalist intruder”…well, I don’t think it’s that way anymore (“Capitalist pig dog” and so on.). There is a high level of “We’re better than you.”-type thing going on, though.

The fact is that they feel threatened because the manager wants me to start helping out there. Figure this: You are working there, you have a bigger body and are a little stronger than the foreigner…but the foreigner is being treated so well. Perhaps it’s pure jealousy (and subsequent undermining of the foreigner).

I could write about this forever (it’s a HYOOGE topic, much deeper than can be put into a few paragraphs), as I’ve done so in some blogs I’ve chronicled these kinds of experiences in.

Let’s just say it’s a country of extremes…the good things are extremely good and the bad things can make your worst nightmares seem like a “Hello Kitty” comic.

As for what I’m doing here: you nailed it…teaching.

Very interesting indeed. I could see this same scenario in a gym anywhere now that you elaborate. Nobody wants to think that their contributions need supplementation from somebody else and you could especially imagine this where a foreigner would be the newcomer. Although in this country I don’t think where somebody’s from matters as much to us. We seem to just want the best information and you see imported trainers and techniques all over the place in all kinds of sports.

The manager maybe sees you as a good addition to the marketing appeal of his gym. More diversity of resources for his customers that the other trainers may see as a slight which goes along with what you’re saying. Any news on this guy’s arm BTW?

–Tiribulus->

You assessment is right on the money Tirib. It was phrased to me in this way:

“We’re going to try to do something new…try a new direction.”

Yes, I’m a good marketing tool for a few different reasons (if I don’t get too fat from the super amount of calories on my AD bulk…LOL), but they all potentially add up to AlphaDragon being a good thing.

Besides, I honestly think there is but one other “foreigner” in this city that works out (the rest are…well, I’ll be nice and just say they are…heavy drinkers/partiers and/or not interested in physical health whatsoever). Apparently this other “laowai” “works” at another gym that became “well off”…perhaps because of him. I’m still looking to check that out.

On to other things:

About the injury: Well the “swelling” (I’ll call it swelling for lack of a better term) seems to not be much of an issue anymore. The arm is still swolen a little, but seems to be ok and slowly (day by day) returning to normal.

We did some serious legwork today, with minimal arm usage, but the Sumo Deadlifts were heavy…so we’ll see what happens tomorrow.
