How much weight (typically/normally) difference is there between someone’s overhead press (no mega back lean, a little/reasonable back lean) max, push press max and jerk (squat or split jerk) max?
I haven’t done push presses or jerks in a long long time and I don’t think I’ve ever tried to do anything really heavy on them. Right now I can probably overhead press 130 lbs./59 kilos at about 146 lbs/66.4 kilos (probably like 10% body fat, 5’3.5", 22 yrs). Obviously to see what I can really do on them I’d have to actually just do it and see, but out of curiosity, what do you think would be a reasonable guess as to what I could push press and jerk?
I’ll throw in my power clean and snatch weight in case that would affect the guess/estimate. Power clean 185/84, snatch 135/61.4 (Pounds/Kilos).
It can vary for each person. If someone has nice hip drive, but weak shoulders, they can still put up some good weight. Someone can have nice hip drive, strong shoulders. Weak hip drive, stronger shoulders. You get the point.
But generally, the press is 70-75% of your push press. The push press and jerk… I’m not sure, but I’d say the push press is somewhere around 80-85% depending on one’s strengths/weaknesses.
If I could meet your ideal percentages there, even the higher ones I’d be pretty happy. Not overall, but in comparison to my current overhead press max. Let’s hope you’re right!
My best ever strict overhead press is like 80kg or something (rarely ever do them) and I’ve split jerked 160kg. Like Andy said, it varies for each person and there isn’t necessarily a correlation between your press and your push press or your jerk.
Various wildly…some people are very strong but can’t Jerk for sh!t = no power or coordination or lack of training

MP: 75kg : crazy strong press
Push Press: doesn’t do it
Power Jerk: I’d guess no more then 80kg?
Split Jerk: 85-90kg
As you can see the guy with little lifting experience is exceptionally strong in his MP! But his Jerk is no where near it should be due to lack of training the Jerk.
Also when I was 18 I only MP 60kg, but split jerked 120kg.
My little bro can probably press about 38kg but he’s C&J 85kg.
There is pretty much no correlation between press, push press and split jerk due to the wild differences in people.

i just started olympic lifting and can press more than i jerk. hopefully that’ll change soon!

I think its really hard to find any correlation between the lifts because of the technical difference between the lifts. They might look pretty similar but in reality they are all very different lifts.
