This may just be a semantics thing, but here in the US, the ‘waist’ is usually what we call the area between your navel and hips, so lower stomach. We would call the area you touch a Bench variation the chest, sternum, and at the lowest, upper abs/stomach.
Sam_Boy wrote: @usmccds423 Haha ye I like gym rat, so do you compete then or a gym rat too?
Ye I was sort of hoping that over time deadlifts would do it but I can see why yours are so big now with the snatch and cleans, I don’t really do anything powerlifting moves like that but am thinking of adding them to get to the next level.
Nice traps anyway mate
Thanks man, just a gym rat for now. I’m considering Oly lesson and once my gym total is 1200 or above I might try a powerlifting meet.
It’s not too hard to add Power Clean and/or Muscle Snatch to your routine. Despite what the internet will tell you, your body won’t explode if your technique is off a bit. I have the luxury of training at home (with bumper plates) so it’s even easier for me. I prefer the full versions, which might be tough at a commerical gym.

No I touch just below my sternum… I have no idea how you could bring it down at your waist.
@spidey22 Ah you may be right here because I count waist as level with naval.
@usmccds423 No worries and cheers for the advice I might look at adding these in.
I also workout at home in my spare room, I don’t have a proper rack but have a squat rack / dipping station and a bench which I can use as a combo for bench press etc. I don’t have bumper plates I have the standard 1 inch plates and bar although I did manage to pick up some 25kg plates that fit and are Olympic size so I can deadlift properly a couple of years ago.
@ csulli I tuck my elbows in they look flared on that picture which means it comes down more.

If you can, I’d invest in some bumper plates. You really only need 150-200 lbs to start with. Couple hundred bucks maybe.

No I don’t think so. Double check the size before you buy them, but they should fit a standard bar I believe.
I’ve got a Pendlay HD Bar (I think that’s what it’s called off muscledriverusa) that fits my standard plates as well as the bumpers. Rogue has some good stuff as well. I used one of their bars the other day and really liked it. I’m not sure which one of there many bars it was though.
I think my bar and rack only go up to 200kg so my reward when I reach 200kg on my deadlifts is to treat myself to a Olympic bar and bumper plates and then when I reach 200kg on my squat I will treat myself to a power rack.

Sounds like your “close-grip bench press” is more of a front delt movement. If you are bringing it that low, you are at too much of a mechanical disadvantage and the only thing bringing the bar back is your delts.
