Weight Held Back by Military

I’m 18 and will be shipping out for the navy on July 25th which is forcing me to maintain a bodyweight of less than 170 at 5’6". I have a decent base after 2 years of intelligent training (bench 255, squat 315, dead 405) but my question is how should I structure my training/ bodyweight since I currently weight 165-168 so I can’t just pack like I wish I could? Maby low rep powerlifting with little to no weight gain?

lolz.

the army has a height/weight standard. i obviously fail it. when i fail it, they tape my neck and my waist, and plug it in to some formula that calculates my bodyfat. i then pass that. i’m sure the navy has a similar program.

The navy won’t let you weight more than 170 lbs?

Well, 170 @ 5’6" can look pretty huge if you’re lean enough. You might be able to get away with going up 10 lbs or so and then cutting, rinse and repeat until you’re a lean and strong 170lb SEAL.

If they’re actually weighing you then you might as well cut now and build up from there.

If you don’t want to deal with any cutting bullshit, then just pick up a copy of 5/3/1 and eat for maintenance.

Not much else you can do I’m afraid…

I failed the weighin every single year. They taped me at the neck and kept moving.

OP, is that you in your avatar?

If yes, then it looks like you do have capacity to lose some weight. So I suppose it all depends when this weigh in is?

Anyway, I would look into some fat loss, get down to atleast 12-15%, and then consider lifting weight and progressing on your numbers.

Army did same thing for me. Me and other lifters/football players would get in a big line at 5:30am to get our neck/waist taped by the company NCO, lol.

I sort of gasp to admit this, but I was thinking the same thing that the Bird wrote. That can either be taken as an affirmation of what he wrote or, alternatively, a signal to me that I should stop posting on these boards.

It appears your recruiter sucks at explaining how the military works.

Like other military dudes have said, if you weigh over your max, they tape your neck and waist, and base what your bf% is off that. As long as you’re 18% or lower (for Marines anyways), you’re good. Though you CAN get hit still if you look like shit in uniform. That ain’t likely to happen unless someone really has it out for you.

Well played sir.

Actually, mine sucked, but in the opposite way. He was too honest with poolees about how shit works, and as a result I was his only recruit before he was fired from his billet. Only reason he got me was because I had already made up my mind on the matter…didn’t need a recruiter to convince me of anything.

Jesus! It’s the Navy and full of fat sailors? Maybe it’s different in the US…

This guy is Navy also.

Leo Ingram…failing weigh ins since the 90’s.

Not sure how the Navy works but in the Marines If you’re going to be overweight you better make sure to be a shit hot PTer. No one is going to mess with someone “overweight” that Pt’s well everyday and maintains a high 1st class pft. Plus you’re allowed to keep a higher bf%.

Once you’ve passed through basic that was it for fitness tests. If they started testing them during their service more than half would fail!
Lol at Leo failing weigh ins!

Ummm there’s annual (or twice annual, depending on services) physical testing all throughout your military career…

We had fitness tests every year. The only thing that changed is they don’t care about the weigh ins if you measure right at the neck and waist. There were many years where I had to plan bulking up around dieting right back down for a pt test. Shit like that probably set me back a few years as far as progress made. Leo Ingram got to well over 300lbs in the military while on duty.

Reading about this neck/waist circumference thing is making my visualize some fat navy officer paying for neck/abdomen lipo with a bunch of puffed up limbs and chest and stuff, lol.
