Quick question regarding weight gainer. When I first began bulking I was using Nature’s Best weight gainer (i’m overseas so ordering from Biotest is not an option). However I stopped after getting bad vibes from people regarding this supplement. I have just bought 2 more tubs because my gains have slowed since I stopped taking it. I can’t seem to get enough calories without it, it’s just too damn expensive eating all the time, so i’m going back on it.
My question is, why does weight gainer seem to have a bad reputation?? I’ve read the nutrition facts and I don’t see anything really wrong with it, but I’m not a nutrition expert or anything even close. I drink this before I go to bed at night and some mornings as well.

There is nothing wrong with using weight gainer shakes as long as they are a part of your diet, not your whole diet. I have a ‘weight gainer’ powder that I combine with whey to make different pre and post work out shakes.
The main concern that some people have with some weight gainers is the low quality, simple, high GI carbs that some contain. These sort of carbs are really only good post work out.
There is nothing wrong with using these powders (Surge is just a fancy weight gainer with quality ingredients so I am told) as long as they are not the sole source of nutrition.
hmm… interesting thanks for the help. I personally love this one. I drink 2 a day and I’ve already hit 1,820 calories, even if i just graze the rese of the day I can easily hit 3-4,000 cals.

Biotest Surge is a pre-/post-workout supplement. It is not a ‘weight gainer.’ It can be used as effectively by those who’s main objective is fat loss as by those who want to build muscle.

Well, that’s a lot of maltodextrin to be using anytime other than post-workout. I wouldn’t want to jack my insulin levels that high throughout the day.
I also wouldn’t want that much supplemental iron on a daily basis unless I were donating blood regularly. Iron can build up to toxic levels easily in men. It’s great for women, though.
Hey it would help a LOT if you posted whats in the supp, the ingredients. That will let us know what the macros come from most of the so called weight gainers are cheap ingreds that are way overpriced and spike the hell out of your insulin all damn day at the wrong times Like Pre bed etc.
Then theres the 900+ k/cals but thats mixed with whole milk. hell if thats just 8oz thats at least 200 of that so what are you really getting for your cash??

Well I did a little research on maltodextrin and found out it’s a carb that increases insulin levels, it’s usually in the form of a startch. But what I don’t understand is how you know that this weight gainer has alot of it?? I mean maltodextrin is in the ingredients but how do you know if it’s too much? My dad has diabetes so this is a concern for me, i guess I’ll only drink one a day from now on. Maybe a stupid question but is there any way to negate the effects of maltodextrin or reduce the insulin spikes that result from it.
I will post ingredients as soon as I get home, I’m at work now. I really wish I posted this before I bought the 2 tubs. Freakin dumbass I am!!!

Well even if I drink it with water I’m still getting 700cals. There’s around 20 servings in a 7lb tub which I buy from e-bay for around $40. I thought it was a decent deal. Especially since this isn’t like other weight gainers that is nothing but sugar. Would it be best to drink post workout or before I go to sleep?

If you want to find out EXACTLY how much is in there, you can email/call the company and ask. When I have asked companies how much something was in a certain product, they have always been more than helpful to answer.
Also, if you look on the label and maltodextrin is the first carb listed, that is usually what the majority of the carbs are.
If I’m not mistaken, the first thing on the ingredients list is what there is most of.
Make your own. There’s a million recipes on this site for homemade weight gainer. Use milk, peanut butter, olive oil, heavy cream, fruit, etc. Play with your own recipe, it’s really not hard.

Essentaially it is nothing but sugar though with like the above stated ALL THAT MALTO
How you tell its due to the fact even though Malto is a VERY simple carb fater than plain sugar it isnt classified as a sugar. So they dont have to put it as such making you the uninformed consumer fell special. it has what 80 some odd carbs and 2 from sugar that how you know iots loaded with Malto and I wouldnt have your diabetic dad drinking the stuff.
Almost all of those carbs are probably maltodextrin. It says there are 3g of sugar and 86 carbs. Technically true, but the body treats malto just like sugar and digests it extremely fast. A combination of malto, dextrose, and whey is actually excellent post-workout. That is actually Surge.
From what I’ve seen, the vast majority of carbs in weight gainers are always malto, and they try to trick people to think it’s slow-digesting [as it’s technically a complex carb].
why not just buy peanut butter and a spoon. get a big big jar of peanut butter.
You said you had to take weight gainer becuase eating all the time was too expensive, but at two dollars a serving, I am thinking that there are cheaper sources of 700 calories.

What do you drink a gallon a day??
Here are the ingredients, let me know what y’all think besides the whole maltodextrin.
Ingredients:
Maltodextrin, Ion Exchange whey protein isolate, alkalized cocoa powder, sunflower oil, less than 2% hydrolyzed guar gum, corn syrup solids, sodium caseinate, monoglycerides, dipotassium phosphate, vitamin/mineral/amino acid blend, chloride, calcium, phosphorous, L-glutamine,…and all the other vitamins I already listed.

It sucks.

Agreed but ill go a touch further.
Pretty much you are buying a SHIT ton of malto and paying Premium price for it. Malto is #1 on the ingredients list. Ingredients are listed in order of amount from most to least. SO, the amount of damn malto in this crap is higher than even the whey.
Then they slap the kitchen sink in there. The shot gun approach on you throwing a little of everything to make you feel special like your geting something Uber damn cool while its likely the cheapest least digestable form of vits and minerals they are.
Ditch it and eat a steak. Or get something quality
Well thanks for all the advice, I guess I now know why weight gainer has a bad rap.
