In a few months I will start to work as a cardiologist resident in a hospital, which requires you about 12-hour shifts mon-thursday so hopefully I will have some time to train on friday, saturday and sunday.
I’m not sure I grasped everything… But training on three consecutive days, with an upper body focus, would it be ok to do:
Friday: Heavy Upper
Saturday: Pump Upper
Sunday: Lower
Hi @Genevo! Not coach Thibaudeau, but I hope you don’t mind input from a collegue who previously shared a similar experience.
Have you considered splitting your training into short sessions more frequently? Or - even do some accessory work every day? That way you will feel less stressed for the presumtive weekend workouts. Fact is, you will feel tired after such a working week, and could use less pressure to perform at the gym. Your proposed weekend workout schedule may prove disadvantageous and result in poor recovery, overtraining and lack of results. What are your goals with your training? Might be wise to lower your expectations a little bit.
Does your hospital have a gym or do you have access to a gym nearby to head into regularly or even directly after work?
Another (maybe more problematic) factor to put into consideration is how you will be able to eat properly during such long shifts? You probably need to load up with proper snacks like fruits, nuts, bars and recovery drinks. I highly recommend supplementation with cyclic dextrin.
Then you have the most important matter long term: Sleep - which I guess might come to be your biggest problem.
It will be interesting to see how coach Thibaudeau respond. In any case I wish you a great experience at work - and in the gym!
