This is for you scientist types, when the directions says to take with 8oz. of water, what happens with 16oz.? Or with 4oz.? Why the magical 8oz.?
It mixes to the desired consistancy.
So…what you’re saying is, that it really makes no difference how much water you use. Does it make a difference once it’s in your stomach? Let’s say I take a scoop of protein with 16oz of water instead of 8oz, will it break down differently in my body? Will I get less of an affect? I know that I’m nit-picking, but I’m curious.
Sometimes the concentration of the substance in your stomach will have an effect on absorption times.
So, if you are talking about something like Surge, you may want to follow the directions fairly closely to maximize impact.
If you are talking about something like Grow!, then mix it to the consistency that you prefer. Heck, eat it with a spoon if you want.
And don’t nitpick so much, it isn’t worth the aggravation…
I think it’s more along the lines of, “Using this quantity makes it taste the way we intended”. More water, and it’s watery and tasteless. Less water, the flavour is too strong or it’s too thick to get down.
I do know that for some products, the quantity recommended is to dilute it sufficiently to avoid stomach problems. If you have more problems, drink it with more water. If you don’t, try less.
Agree with the above.
The only time consistency really matters is when talking endurance or specific rehydration goals mid-event. In that case an 8% carbohydrate solution (on average) ideal for maximizing hydration and carbohydrate uptake. >10% slows gastric emptying.
Ok matth class, i take a 60-70 gram carb drink before and after my workout. How much water should be in each drink?
I was using 32 ounces for about 130-140g of carbs(gatorade powder, maltodextrin, dextrose) drink split between before and after work. is this too much water? On top of that i have about 16 ounces for about 45-50 grams of protein in another water bottle split between before and after as well. Is this too much or too little?
I’m getting the picture. This was going to lead me into asking the question: Is it better to drink water or not drink water with your meals? Does the amount have any affect on how nutrients are absorbed? I had read somewhere that water during a meal will dilute gastoric acids. Still just nitpickin, but it bothers me not knowing.
Hmm, I think drinking or not drinking with meals is one of those silly items that people get all preachy about.
For some, drinking makes it easy to eat faster and hence more, while if it is only water, perhaps it will simply help fill you up.
Drink or don’t as you want to. Your body will do what it needs to do to digest your meals (unless you have particular health issues).
JB wrote an article about this.
From what I remember. I don’t want to miss quote so that is about all I can give.

Good point about not wanting to dilute Surge.
I typically mix my Grow! with less water so it doesn’t kill my appetite.
