Note: it wasn’t the KGB in Russia that did this, but the CHEKA (if I remember). But I figured neither of you would know wtf those were. :>

Depends which purge you mean. Lenin’s purge used Cheka, while Stalin’s purge (the Great Purge) used a different agency, called the NKVD (The People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs).

The Cheka were some real satanists — boiling people alive and such. I apologize to BB and Prof for any possible comparison to such demonic beings.
Since voting is a right, not a privilege you don’t need to “test” for it. Owning a gun is a right(see the bill of rights) not a privilege therefore no test needed. The only way to be stripped of these RIGHTS is to be convicted of a crime.
You test for a drivers license because it is an individual privilege extended to you by the state you live in.
Just because someone is not as educated as we would like them to be doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have the right to pick their representatives or governing officials. Although I do think that there is way to much partisanship shown in the MSM which directly affects the uneducated masses. You want a fairness doctrine, maybe they should regulate media coverage of governmental elections, not radiowaves.

News flash their are people that have been persecuted against longer and worse then blacks in America.
Hell if slavery had never happened how many blacks would be in America? Not saying slavery was a good thing, but 200+ years later a black man is now president. If slavery never happened we probably wouldn’t have many black people even in this country. I don’t see too many moving here these days.

Wow. That whole post is ridiculous.
I’ll just say that you can’t discuss poll literacy/knowledge tests in America without discussing the historical context in which they were used to disenfranchise blacks.
You actually want to reverse the trend of increased suffrage and political participation in America. We went from only white landowners being able to vote, to all white men, to all men (theoretically), to women, and then finally to all races and sexes being able to vote in actuality. For some reason you want to reverse the trend of increasing political freedom of the people on the basis of intelligence or knowledge. Frankly, I don’t think much would change even if you did restrict voting only to the intelligent and knowledgeable.
And btw the US constitution does not guarantee the right to vote

Most people don’t even know what those are either. Kudos for being well-read.

Besides rampant unemployment from constant importation of slaves, a big cause of ancient Rome’s troubles was that rich guys would buy influence amongst the masses of citizens. Our founding fathers were very aware of this. Masses are very susceptible to being swayed by a good speaker who promises them a paradise.

Agree that the pernicious influence of corporations in the media and politics shows the undue power of the rich even in a supposedly democratic society.
Disagree that the founding fathers were necessarily right in the ideas of limited suffrage and anti-populism that were in vogue in their time. The solution to an undereducated electorate is not to limit the vote to those who happen to be knowledgeable at the moment–it’s to educate the electorate as a whole, so that we don’t decrease the role the people play in their own government.

Hey really good point, a large misinformed body of people already elected obuma. How much worse could we get if 10 year olds voted?

Yeah, really good point. They’re nowhere near as informed as those of us here in PWI are. They probably don’t even know that Obama’s wife “hates whites” or that he’s involved with the Muslim president of Kenya.

I think the point is that the way the constitution was originally written that voting wasn’t a right, and that there are too many people in this country that take these so called rights for granted.
That a lot of what people in this country consider a right is really and concession entitlement.

Yes, but how many of them will vote for something just as stupid like McCain?s favorite color. Point is they are American citizens too if knowledge on the issue’s isn’t required why can’t they vote. Hell kids are more impartial when it comes to discrimination and race then any other group of people.
I am a firm believe you learn to be racist your not born that way. So why not let them vote for the candidate they think is best dressed or has the same favorite color. It’s just as dumb as voting because you don’t like white people or you hate democrats.

If voting actually mattered I would agree; however, it is electoral votes that count. Why do candidates spend so much time in the big states? It is because they want the most electoral votes. Like I posted earlier 99.99% of your state can vote republican and the electoral votes can go to the democratic candidate. If the popular vote was all we had I would be more inclined to take voting over gun ownership, but it would still be a close one. Espcially when so many uninformed voters vote.

No man, I think there should be tests and other requirements in order to vote. Hell, personally I’d like to see people who couldn’t get, say, over a 650, 650, 5.5 on the GRE or similar test.
