This poses the question,

Will there ever be another Mega-Rock band like VH again?

Sure there is tons of nostalgia and great music from what these guys did all the way up to “1984,” but are people only going to see them because of their catalog, or are people ravenously hungry for a rock show that blows their insides out leaving them numb from the awesome?

Off the top of my head, there is no other band thats’ active and touring who can provide the kind of mojo VH did back in their day, even when Sammy was the frontman.

I really doubt it. For me, the closest is a band from Norway called Pagan’s Mind. Their guitarist, Jorn Viggo Lofstad, was HEAVILY influenced by Eddie. Although this band rarely plays the USA, they’re very popular worldwide.

Listen to the vid… especially the solo around the 3:00 minute mark… to hear Eddie’s influence.

Plus, during the solo when they pan to the ‘live shot’, he’s playing a “Wolfgang” (EVH signature guitar). Actually, it’s the guitar in the ‘screen shot’ of the video you posted.

Steely

Every single video I’ve ever seen of Pagan’s Mind shows Lofstad using the Wolfgang in a live setting. However, I was surprised to see him using the Les Paul in the studio.
Do you know what advantages on old classic like the Black Beauty would have over the Wolfgang in the studio… and vice versa?

Panama!

Tone.
Comfort.
Care.

A live rig of a touring band is often different from what’s available or desirable in a studio. A guitar player may have a 59 Les Paul and a 1965 Deluxe Reverb amp that they use in the studio but no way those are going out in a road case getting banged around.

Wolfgang guitars are equipped with Floyd Rose locking tremolos-- a must (or any tremolo) for dive bombing, tweaking, or other bar-vibrato stuff. When you’re laying down a rhythm track, a Les Paul (ie. no tremolo) is great for the tone and the thickness (if that’s what you’re looking for). With the humbuckers in the EVH (or any guitar), it’s close enough for ‘club loud’.

Comes down to comfort, too. I like jamming/recording with LP’s, but I can’t stand up with one to play a gig with-- scale is too small and they’re uneven, so I play strats/tele’s. Maybe he’s just more comfortable with the EVH live.

Classic example is by the time Led Zeppelin IV was recorded, Page was using various Les Pauls live and in the studio. The solo for “Stairway” was done on a Telecaster. You wouldn’t see him play that live (only very early and pre-Zeppelin).

Great answers.
Thanks Steely!

WOW, were some of you pessimists wrong! Go to iTunes, search for “van halen different kind of truth,” and listen to the 90-second song clips. The whole album is available for preview. (Use the little blue arrow “play” button on the left side of each song.)

Start with “Beats Workin’,” “You and Your Blues,” “Blood and Fire,” . . . shit, just listen to it all. HEAVIEST album they’ve ever done with Dave!!   No ballads here!

(Use good headphones.)

Edit: You have to click on this link: Connecting to the iTunes Store.

It will ask you to switch to the Canadian iTunes store (preview isn’t available on the US store yet). Click yes, then click on “View in iTunes.”

LOL @ “Stay Frosty”

I feel bad for all the young guitarists whose first exposure to EVH will be this monstrosity.

I do kinda dig “China Town”

EDIT: There is hope. Some good samples. Some of these other songs should have been the first ones out of the gate.

Yup, “Tattoo” is easily the weakest song on the album. By faaaaaar.

The worst VH song is still light years better than the best Nickelback song.

Tickets are bought. March 1st. Me and Diamond Dave in the same building. YES.

I was 6 when VH1 was released. It was my first album (which I still have) and certainly responsible for me wanting to play guitar.

Saw the 5150 tour in Philly. Awesome. Incidentally BTO opened for them and Randy Bachman (the “B” in “BTO”) got booed off the stage for trying to do a violin bow guitar solo a la Jimmy Page.

I thought the last DLR reunion tour sounded pretty good (vid clips). I wish Michael Anthony was back in, but still, with a new album and tour, there should be a lot of cool stuff coming up. Hopefully Eddie delivers.

It would be more correct to say ala Jimmy page.

I’m sure there’s a Photoshop in there somewhere…but I don’t fuck with the Gods.

C’mon you bastards… tell me this song doesn’t go pretty fuckin hard. What a riff.

Damn, they were all on YouTube (the 90-second clips) but about half of them got taken down.

Nice and HEAVY, then Edward just takin’ off and runnin’ super-fast.

Edit: I think this is my favorite song on the album. Pure, all-out ass-kickery on every front.

Love this one. Slow build, but cool-ass, dirty riffage.
