Valentine's Day

Wednesday is bench night so that’s what we’re doing.

Valentine’s day is right up there with New Year’s eve on expectations that can’t be met and, if you try, are a lunch bag let down. My husband and I go out of our way all the time to be good to each other. Having a day dedicated to it annoys me.

Last night we had pancakes and bacon though. That was delicious.

Cooked enchiladas together over the weekend (she’s a coach so has games/practice all this week and this weekend). I have flowers headed to her classroom today, may be waiting in the nude with mac and cheese (her favorite easy dish) just to mix things up a bit, you know…the usual haha

Staying home and cooking a surf and turf dinner for her. Maybe stay home maybe go out for a drink afterwards.

Pan seared sea scallops
Sautéed mushrooms and onions
Steamed asparagus, lightly buttered
Steamed broccoli and cauliflower with my family secret cheddar cheese sauce

Lol,

Sent the wife a thing of roses and Sherries Berries (sp?) to her office. Doing crab cake takeout for dinner (can’t really go out with the infant). Gave her a special something this morning before work   and have a massage planned for this evening.

She got me this sweet ass Natty Boh sign!

We’re not doing anything for Valentine’s Day and never have (6 years together, will be married this year). None of us are particularly romantic and if we do something romantic, it’s sure as hell not going to be on some random ass holiday.
Conversation this morning:
Me: Hey, happy Valentine’s.
She: laughs Oh god, that shit’s today?
End.

Never really a big event, but it’s the first married Valentine’s. Made her breakfast in bed this morning, had a bouquet waiting when she walked downstairs along with a single rose to take with her to work, also packed a card in her lunch bag to surprise her.

Wrote a poem to go in a card she’ll get tonight, and will have dinner and a glass of wine all ready when she gets home from work.

man, you really need to manage expectations

Ha, we’re together 15+ years. Believe me, expectations are pretty well-established. Just wanted to step up from the usual since it’s “a new first.”

I’m on duty today. Kissed my wife goodbye at 5:30 this morning and won’t see her again until tomorrow night. Sent flowers to her office yesterday and will take her out to eat tomorrow. She got us tickets to see Joe Rogan next month and made me a strawberry pretzel salad to take to work today.

Will celebrate our 29th anniversary this year. (Come at me, bros.) She is no longer able to wear her engagement and wedding rings–they’re heirlooms, and have worn to the point where the diamonds have started to fall out (we’re down one already), and the jeweler says they can’t be fixed. I lost my wedding band ~15 years ago on a roller coaster (long unhappy story). The point of all this is, we’ve decided our Valentine’s Day gifts this year will be to purchase a complimentary set of wedding bands. (If anyone has suggestions in this regard, I’m listening.)

All that said, she had a mini-cake topped with a chocolate-covered strawberry waiting for her at the breakfast table this morning, along with a nice card.

You’re welcome.

That’s a great idea, but what’s my wife going to wear?

I would suggest going to a custom jeweler. Possibly incorporating some or all of the stones from your first rings. We did this and my wife loves it and gets tons of compliments. This way, she knows that nobody else has a ring like hers. Its takes longer but a good jeweler will work with your and send you pics of the design and update you on progress.

That’s a really good idea. Thanks!

Another suggestion on rings…ask about the European design (i think thats what its called) its flat on the bottom and is designed to keep from spinning around her finger due to the weight of the stones.

x2 on this. My wife used rubies from a ring her Great Aunt left her alternated with diamonds in an eternity band. Doesn’t look like “a wedding ring”, but it’s very much her and it has meaning.

As for yours, just don’t go with silly silicone gel rings. I get the idea of them for people who lift, but I also believe in the idea that the ring itself is at least somewhat of a symbol of marriage. Squishy, disposable, and easily replaced doesn’t seem to be the right message.

Me - Hey Rikka it’s Valentine’s day.
Wife - Oof I completely forgot about it.

I don’t even get this. Who needs to wear a wedding band to lift?

I have a titanium wedding ring and I take it off before every workout or competition, mainly because, if I wear it, the finger is going to go before the ring does.

I only wear mine when I’m out. If I’m at my desk, home, gym, driving, etc., then it’s off. I can’t stand being encumbered by it.

That’s funny. I very rarely take mine off. It feel weird to not wear it. In almost 11 years I bet it’s been off for a total of 2 minutes.
