I mean sure, except we didn’t see tanks firing off their 105mm at unarmed citizens, and Lafayette park had a total body count of how many again? Tiananmen Square was in the tens of thousands and is not allowed to be talked about nor taught in schools.

Or do nothing and close your eyes hoping the problem goes away. And the only guns people are talking about making illegal are the automatic weapons, as far as I know. No one, to my knowledge is trying to ban all guns.

AR-15’s are not automatic. They are semi-auto, meaning one bullet per trigger squeeze.
Bump stocks (which were effectively semi-auto > auto modifications) are also illegal now too.
So fully automatic “military weapons” are not available for the public because they are illegal to own without a very extensive process to obtain them.
A manufactured full-auto AR-15 does not exist.

I have a couple of issues with the article. Its hard to know what their definition of mass shooting is. 4 or more people being killed is the standard definition.
Now if that is the case they have still been occurring in Australia since the 1996 gun bans, its a very low bar to reach, for a so called mass shooting. These cases have generally been family violence, murder suicide, 4-5 victims max. Who knows how many were committed in the prior decades to the bans, the article mentions 18.
Firstly I can only think of 2 pre 1996, Port Arthur where a person with a grievance, or mental illness used a semi automatic firearm to indiscriminately kill multiple strangers.
So there weren’t many mass casualty events either before or after the semi auto gun bans. Events that technically meet the definition of 4 or more still occur, with both legal and illegally owned firearms.
The guns pictured are probably just stock photo’s of American guns.This is not an accurate representation of the guns handed in. I know this because there is plenty of footage of firearms that were handed in. They were almost all Grandpa’s old small calibre hunting rifles, bolt actions, and double barrel shotguns. There were very few semi automatic rifles, or semi auto or pump action shotguns handed in for destruction, which is the type of gun the bans were supposed to stop. So basically almost all the guns handed in for destruction are guns that can still be legally owned, by a licensed shooter today in Australia.
A similar type ban in the US is not going to work, except for disarming many dimwitted but otherwise law abiding citizens
I never saw any 30.cal Browning GPMG’s handed in during the 1996 ban.
