USING WEIGHTS TO TRAIN ABS

Since when are the calves and abs slow twitch?
Ok, possibly the soleus, and the inner unit musculature of the core is more tonic than phasic, but nobody’s talkin about that stuff.

As usual Marc I agree with you, and I’ll talk with you about it. In general, the rectus abdominis and gastrocnemius are fast-twitch muscles. Like you stated the inner musculature of the trunk is tonic in nature in order to support posture and breathing. Along the same lines the soleus, is generally a slow-twitch muscle group as it’s more involved with posture and stabilization than the gastroc. For now we can only make generalizations about muscles and their given fiber types, there just isn’t enough biopsy research done yet to say conclusively what fiber types are more dominant in certain muscles. Not to mention, the more research is done the more we are finding new fiber types, and behavior patterns of those fibers. Obviously this will differ from person to person too, but I digress……

I have never advocated training or diet principles without first implementing them into my own routine; so not really sure where you got all that from.

Nick, I was referring to Mr. Anonymous’s post, not yours. I completely agree with your point, the abdominals (inner and outer unit) must be trained differently for athletes than bodybuilders, and you hit it on the head with your reccomendations.
