USA Women's Soccer World Cup

There are written rules for how to conduct a renegotiation? Sounds rather effeminate to me. Greed is good and there are no rules. Go back to the socialist utopia in your head.

And president of the USSR? Is that like the president of Czechoslovakia?

All I’m requesting is a proper source with verified figures.

You don’t know what the fuck you’re saying, really, you don’t.

It’s stunning.

Why? It ceases to be capitalism only when the force of government is used to compel them to pay more. You may not like the tactics being used, but it’s still capitalism.

I’m looking now, it is a little more complicated how they calculate it because World Cup years have more games involved, actual World Cup games aren’t counted since that goes to FIFA, but since lead ups to world cups have more games than other years they play more games and therefore generate more revenues.

I may have overestimated the importance of games period to how much these teams make, which makes the women’s case even more like an uphill battle since the biggest part of their revenue generation comes from sponsorships and broadcast (which was previously mentioned). World Cup years create visibility, interest, etc. There’s intangibles there that are hard to calculate

@dt79 government has already been brought in. the essence of capitalism is about letting the market decide, in this case having people come to pay to see you, or watch you on tv.

let’s make something clear here - the women are in a lawsuit for gender pay discrimination

I just took this from CBSsports, maybe this will give us a better map on what to discuss. According to the lawsuit:

  • The women are paid less than the men despite performing similar job duties for the same employer and outperforming the men — at times earning more profit for the federation, playing more games, winning more games, winning more championships and garnering higher television ratings. To support that claim, the lawsuit cites the women’s (then) three World Cup titles, four Olympic gold medals, No. 1 rank in the world for 10 of the 11 last years and the 2015 World Cup title game being the most-watched soccer game in American TV history at the time.
  • The women actually spend more time in training camps and playing games than the men because of this success. From 2015-18, the women played 19 more matches than the men.
  • In addition to unequal pay, the lawsuit says the federation provides unequal playing, training and travel conditions, and unequal promotion for games.
  • Examples cited: From 2014-17, the women played 21 percent of their domestic matches on artificial turf compared to two percent for the men. In 2017, the USSF chartered at least 17 flights for the men and none for the women. Lower ticket prices and less promotion of women’s matches led to “USSF-manufactured revenue depression.”
  • When the USWNT players association negotiated a new collective bargaining agreement, which took effect Jan. 1, 2017, and runs through 2021, the USSF rejected requests for equal compensation and also turned down a proposed “revenue-sharing model” that would test the federation’s claim that “market realities” do not justify equal pay for women. “Under this model, player compensation would increase in years in which the USSF derived more revenue from WNT activities and player compensation would be less if revenue from those activities decreased. This showed the players’ willingness to share in the risk and reward of the economic success of the WNT,” the lawsuit says.

Which is why I’m still on the fence. The women’s case may actually be less of an uphill battle.

What has the government done other than virtue signal?

Federation response :

  • "The U.S. Soccer federation has explained the pay inequality is caused by separate collective bargaining agreements.
  • The USWNT has a guaranteed salary rather than pay-for-play like the men do. The federation says the women have benefits the men’s team does not, including healthcare. "

I have read this. It’s why they are renegotiating. It doesn’t add anything new here.

Case in point.

However, this is only what the women’s team are alleging. And it’s a lawsuit. It is normal to overstate their claims.

Guys soccer teams are not run the same as companies. There is alot of stuff that you guys do not know.

These players sign a contract lets say for 100,000 p/w running from June 1st 2019, to June 1st 2022 (3 year contract) The player has the right to ask for a raise, but he signed to be on that wage for 3 years. The same works in NBA. Some players (Neymar, Kawhii Leonard, can fake injury or refuse to play) Giving teams no other option but to cave in and sell them or risk losing them for Peanuts in free agency. Im pretty sure there is no re-negotiating of contracts in the nba, unless a team wants to sign a player to a max deal, to ensure that they stay even longer with their team. The US womens national team (some of you state they have contracts to play for their country) which I dont believe is the case.

If the USWNT has a guaranteed salary unlike the men, then the only inequality can be the other source of income (Tournament prize money) . The inequality can not come from the salaries because the men do NOT HAVE SALARIES to play for the USMNT. The answer to that for the 100th time is REVENUE.

There are things that FIFA allows in player contracts that that other sports do not.

  1. Agent fees. Player is sold from Benfica to Chelsea. Chelsea pays Benfica 20m for player. Agent demands 5% of that fee from Benfica.
  2. Sell on fee percentages. Benfica demands 20m for the player, and also 20% of the next fee that Chelsea sell him for.

I suggest some you go back to watching the cooking channel because you clearly have no idea wtf you are talking about. I have the utmost respect for the womens national team and the womens game.

What do you mean? they turned it down, obviously if it was in the contract. Rapinoe said as much in a recent interview when she was asked about it, if she would be willing to give up the guaranteed money, she bulked at it lol

I have an idea. Why doesn’t EA sports stop making Fifa games for men, and instead lets make it a womens only FIFA game. Lets see how that does lol. Once their revenue goes down 500% they want be talking about no gender equality anymore.

Read it again.

yeah I read it wrong, because Rapinoe was asked recently and she definitely didn’t want to lose that guaranteed money. did they change their tune?

I think the federation should split the two organizations completely apart.

Probably. But the point is that this lawsuit isn’t “frivolous”. The women most likely aren’t worth a 50/50 split in total revenue(and I SERIOUSLY doubt this is their end goal) at this point in time but the wage disparity can still be too high.

And even IF they are worth more, did they have to do it in this way? And this is what brings us back to point 1 of this entire thread - their celebrations vs a Thailand team that makes no money, filled with amateurs , that needed a benefactor to even go to the tournamet and then when put on blast had the audacity to again bring up the sexism card.

It’s a new get out of jail card

  • your sport isn’t as popular? Sexism
  • people are questioning your character because you celebrate like an idiot? Sexism
  • you don’t get paid as much? Sexism

And we’ll continue down this road for god knows how long and for what end

Well, I’ll let my young daughter weigh in.

Apparently, the ugly team captain lady said that the reason they were such a good team is because lesbians are “superior” to heterosexuals, in all ways. Looked up the statement and she did, indeed, say basically that.

While looking, I also noted several stories where heterosexual players were essentially hazed off the team, including one girl specifically because she was religious.

Anyway, daughter’s take away is that soccer is a game for angry lesbians and her interest went to zero.

Yeah I saw her tweet.

The irony of all this of course is that in other words to be be better at sport you have to be a bit more dude lol

I found a tweet and a Guardian article with the quotes below. I’m not sure that what she said is the same as “…lesbians are superior to heterosexuals…” but I think I understand who she was trying to antagonize and why. And to be honest, if gays are 4% of the population then it would make sense that a team has at least 1 gay player. I think she’s really just trying to get a reaction from people and hasn’t thought about the consequences of what she tweeted. For example, a picture of 3 white Nobel winners of European descent with the caption “We already discussed this. Science is Science. Whites rule.” would be seen as terribly racist even if whites of European descent are over-weighted as a proportion of Nobel winners. Let’s be honest, she - like most professional athletes - is being paid to play a game and the finer points of causality are lost on her.

Anyways, it wouldn’t surprise me if one day we did find a biological basis in lesbians being better at sports (if they are) much as we find more male geniuses and for the same reasons (see: Greater Male Variability).
