So I’m in the gym earlier tonight, having a pretty good workout and eventually I get to deadlifts. I have never been a terribly consistent deadlifter, but I want to work them into my program more. Anyhoo, on my last set on the 3rd or so rep, I get this fairly small popping feeling in my upper back, almost like a rubber band being snapped. I finish another rep or so, but after completing, I feel discomfort right below my right shoulder blade and in towards the center of my back a little bit.
I was able to do some other exercises for a bit (the Coach Davies muscle snatch complex), but when I went to do some towel chins… not good times. I basically could not even get one because the pulling motion made that spot below my shoulder blade (as in a half an inch down from it, not beneath the shoulder blade itself) feel like it was on fire. Heck, I could even feel it when I pulled open the door to my apartment building. As of right now, there is some discomfort, but not a sharp pain.
Obviously an exact diagnosis is difficult on-line, but any thoughts? Does this sound consistent with a pull/strain or is it sounding more like a tear? That little popping sensation is what has me the most concerned. I’ve basically been icing that spot throughout the evening. I’m trying to look at charts of back muscles on-line to provide a better idea as to the spot where the pain occurs, but what the hell do I know about this kind of thing? lol From the charts, it looks like it is located around the rhomboid or the infraspinatus (but I have no idea if that is what the problem actually is).
Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank ya kindly.
you’ll know more in the morning.
could just be some torn adhesions.
I’ve done little things like that myself.
Usually is better the next morning or so.
Here’s hoping that’s what it was!

Me too - thanks Joe! Geez, just looking at your Dorian avatar doing the bent over rows @ 405 is practically causing it to flare up.
You dun over did it. Sounds like you make have strained or popped a tendon given the pain down your arm. Ice is the best thing, ibuprofen is the next. It will get better. Don’t sweat it. Shoulder injuries are worse, trust me I going through one now, sucks.

Overdoing it - yeah, that sounds like something I would do. lol The funny thing is that I was really flying through the DLs for the most part tonight. Through the hips, glutes and hams, I was powering those suckers up, so it sucks that what gave out was in such a (seemingly) random spot.
Quick point of clarification - the pain does not radiate at all down my arm (thank God) - it is localized to that spot near my shoulder blade there in the back.
Based upon what you have said, I would venture that you pulled your scapular tendon a bit. Also, you might have caused your spine to twist out of alignment a bit. If it does not feel better in a couple of days, go to a chiropractor and have him reset your spine.
It does not hurt, and is worth it. About 70% of the mid-upper back pain the people I train with is due to spinal alignment issues. It generally makes your back feel “pinched”, or like there is something pulling your muscles.
I’m experiencing something very similar at the moment. I didnt feel anything in the gym but about 24 hours after doing some RDL’s (explosively) I woke up and my upper back was very stiff and in a lot of pain - mainly in what seems to be my left rhomboid - although its very central so feels more like the spine sometimes. The pain has subsided a bit but I can really feel it if I hyperextend my back (push chest out). This was about 6 weeks ago and I’ve been stretching and icing it and seeing an osteopath but she doesnt seem to have cured it. Let me know how you get on. Anyone else got any ideas what I/we might have done?
Well, I saw the osteopath again this morning - she thinks I might have a bulging disk in the thorassic (sp?) region (i.e between neck and lumbar spine). Doesn’t sound good. I’m going back in 2 days to see the head osteopath at the clinic who can hopefully tell me more. Anyone know much about this? (sorry to hijack your thread) Any advice appreciated.
I was going to post on this, but forgot, so thanks for the reminder and thanks for asking! It ended up feeling a touch better the next morning and has consistently gotten better every day. It’s not very noticeable at all now, so will try pull-ups and possibly (this is a big maybe) deadlifts come Friday. So maybe it was the adhesions thing as you suggested JW. The fact I could feel that slight popping sensation did have me a little concerned, but oddly enough, doing damn well today.
And will-of-iron, don’t sweat the hijack. Back problems are such a mystery that any chance to get more info and help is an opportunity to be taken every time.
