Upcoming PL Competitions

very true about “miami gyms.”

I lift at a place that’s westchester-ish that is half oly gym half crossfit (as far as physical space), but what sold me was the strength/oly emphasis and chill owners/staff/lifters that is harder to find in mia. The olympic coaches have serious cred (not CF cred) and the crossfitters are even all on 531. There are bands, chains, a reverse hyper, prowler, yokes (i think that’s what they’re called), farmers walk bars, a safety bar, GHDs, atlas stones and all the rubber coated iron you could handle, but not much for benches and the schedule can be odd with all the CF classes. The CFers running around can be a plus as well… Not sure if that fits your needs but it does it’s called Crossfit Soul.[/quote]

Thanks man, Ill def give it a look. I will have all of the Spring and Summer off to just focus on lifting and such until I start an MBA program in the Fall. So a commute to a good gym will be worth it.

MrTorres, what weight class are you in? I plan to do the same meet, first powerlifting meet for me. I’ll be in the 220 class/raw, hoping to total ~1300.

What is usually a good squat/bench/deadlift to get first in the open 220 class? Looked at other meets in the past year in my area, and I was surprised to see that I would’ve been top 3 at most. Doing everything by the powerlifting rules is new to me, had to videotape myself to be sure everything was good. Tested myself last weekend - 315 bench, 455 squat, 525 dead.

Well I was planning to compete in 220 also, but as it turns out the current 242 junior raw in cali is beatable to me so I’m going for some state records. I’m planning to open with 375 sqt, 235 bch and 440 dl. I like to start light and make bigger jump just to make sure I’m on the board.
I would just recommend opening with something you can easily double with clean form. Just get on that board and the rest is gravy.

I was looking at records, too. We are in opposite categories though, I am sub-masters. I’m pretty sure I can set state records for 100kg sub-masters in every category. Did a test a week ago to see where I’m at using meet rules, and I beat every one except the bench. I just have never done the full ROM with a pause, but I’m close enough where with the training I’ve done, I think I can beat it. My squat and deadlift can beat the current records easily. How high you planning to go for 3rd attempt? This was my plan:
Squat
405 opener
455 2nd
495+ 3rd

Bench
275 opener
315 2nd
335+ 3rd

Dead
495 opener
525 2nd
555+ 3rd

I was thinking of doing the 2nd attempt as my first, which will allow me to go higher. I’m really not sure what I can do, since my bench and squat gym numbers are a little higher, but not to powerlifting standards. Also, the only thing keeping me from a 585 deadlift is grip issues – i dislocated my thumb weeks ago and was unable to grip the bar until 2 weeks ago, so my grip got weak while using straps. Although the 525 test was with no chalk on a bar with little knurling (my gym sucks). Been working on my grip last week, this week, too.

No idea. Some of the slots aren’t even taken yet, haha. I think it because they split between “classic Raw” and “raw” with the only difference being knee wraps. I realize my numbers aren’t very good but if I can get a few states then so be it.

this is my only 3rd meet so I’m no expert but what I would say is take an easy opener. You want your opener to be a confidence builder and remember you can make whatever jumps you want.

my plan is:
375
410
440+ Squat

235
250
265+ Bench

440
465
490+ DL

I have a higher PR dead but after 4 or 5 hours and 8 attempts I find its hard to set DL PRs.

Yeah, the gradual route is probably better. I might even drop my deadlift opener a little. By the way, quick question for anyone, where do I get a singlet by Saturday? Any decent sporting good stores in SoCal sell them?

I think sports authority carries wrestling singlets. Might try there. Worst case I have spares your welcome too.

Mr. Torres, thanks for all your help. Steve (the meet coordinator) called me and said he would have singlets for sale at the meet. He said he’d make sure they had an XXL for me.

Could easily break some junior/state/federation/ raw records in squat,dead-lift and total as long as I stay in the 198 lbs class. Even though I’m probably trying to take the record from the one or two other people that have competed in this division haha. A little worried about the mono-lift usage since I’ve never touched, or even seen one in person.

In my log, but copy and pasted below:

2012 Atlantic Raw Championships.

Write up:

Weighed in at 95.6kg, wasn’t trying to make any weight class, so that’s fine. Actually down a bit from last month, but on par for recently.

Squats
Warm up:
60kg
80kg
100kg
120kg
140kg
160kg
180kg

Opener:
190kg
Smoked it.

Second:
205kg
Took 205 for a 5kg PB. Smoked it again, two whites and a red.

Third:
220kg
Decided to go for it, as I already had the small PB. Destroyed it for a 20kg PB.

Bench
Warmups felt like shit.

Opener
115kg
Smoked it

Second
122.5kg
2.5kg PB, smoked it too.

Third
130kg
Got raped by it. Should have went 127 or 125.

Deads
Warm ups felt okay, did half plate jumps up to 200kg.

Opener
220
smoked

Second
230
smoked

Third
240kg…well, it was going to be 240kg for a 2.5kg PB. I got convinced to go 260kg for a potential second place. Got it to mid shin and that’s it. Oh well. I think 245 would have been my max today

Total
572.5kg for a 37.5kg PB on my total"

I’m pretty happy about it. Well, my squat at least lol. And I would have been happy with 245 or 250kg deadlift. Bench still sucks, but taking steps to fix that. Well, a different step. I started half my sentences with well.

220 Squat video (some other vids in channel)

Nicely done good sir.

Thanks. Next meet will be in January or February. Unless I choose to opt out of it and just make nationals in March my next meet.

Well didn’t make it into the 242’s so no records but had a pretty good meet.
Squat
365 2 reds (depth)
365 3 whites (loosened up my wraps)
425 Missed (leaned forward too much)

Bench
235 3 whites
247 3 whites
264 3 whites

DL
440 2 whites (right knee didn’t lock perfectly)
472 3 whites
501 3 whites

Nothing earth-shattering for a 220 but they were all meet PR’s. So I’m happy.

^ so you competed in 220? How are you able to set records in 242 but not 220? Confused sorry. But gj at the meet.

Thanks and yeah the CA Classic Raw Junior records are wierd. The 220 has a record total of 1355 and the 242 has a record of 1019. I don’t know how to explain that.
