You can be the smart ranger or you can be the hard ranger…

How did it go?

Once I hit mile 6 it felt like my energy system FINALLY kicked over and I could coast. My cardiovascular system had zero issues. I spent the whole time talking with my wife. But my legs felt like running in sand the whole time.

My current program requires 300 bodyweight squats every day, and on Tuesday I took 405 for 4 triples on the SSB, then a set of 33x205, then went 6x4x275 on front squat to pins on Thurs and then a 43 rep belt squat stripset yesterday, among other plain ol stupidity.

But I made myself 2 pork chops afterwards, so that was cool.

That answers the question of “which ranger are you?” Love it!

Morning all. Looks like I am going to have to bow out of this, while I have had no real success, I have had to go back to the drawing board. I have started following Dr Huberman’s podcast, just got a lot of bloodwork done, and waiting on some DNA results. Also, just got out of the hospital with appendicitis, Doc says no exercise for 4-6 weeks for recovery. So going to move my questions over to the labs section and start learning stuff about what’s happening.

Quick downlow of my results though is that I have higher inflammation markers, which could have come up with my appendix starting to be weird, but I am looking through old labs to see if it is more chronic than accute. I have a terrible ability to process sugar and glucose that I need to work on, to increase insulin sensitivity and a few other things. So going to really dig into this and try to understand a lot more of what is going on.

1 positive which I didn’t expect, my internal age is 46, and my actual age is 48, so at least I am not internally older than I really am

Beat thing for this for me has been adding in walking a few times a week. Has really helped my BG control.

Maybe something to try? Hope you start feeling better soon.

Funny you say that, one of the recommendations (which I don’t believe is really doable) is a quick 5 min walk every hour. Having said that, I think that when I can adding in a 30-50 min walk 3 times a week is a great idea.

Why/what for?

How did you determine this?

Are you having an appendectomy?
Good luck!

Recovering From. Kind of emergency surgery Wed after going to ER at 3am that day.

  1. why not? good data points to have and gain knowledge from
  2. Consistantly high waking glucose even after 12 + hours overnight fasting. above 110 commonly. hba1c results elevated above normal. I am looking into previous blood tests to see if it has been on going or is relatively new.

What actionable data points do you expect to get from this? The answer to reaching your goals is eating less calories than you burn.

Consider going Keto for a few months to help resensitize yourself to insulin.

In your macronutrient tracking, do you think you stayed true to your goals >80% of the time? What does your data say?

The answer to reaching my goals is not eating less than I burn. I have been trying that in various ways for the last 8 months, most recently adhering to my protein goal and hitting it every day. My calorie tracking also had me at or under my calories each and every day.

Unfortunately Keto didn’t work for me either, and there are a lot of myths about keto that I have more recently researched that make sense as to why just increasing ketones in your blood isn’t the right answer.

My data continually said I should be losing weight, and having done this protein goal and calorie minimizing on several occasions, there is something else going on. Sometimes it just ‘isn’t that easy’ and underlying issues need to be addressed, including chronic or acute inflammation, glucose utilization, mineral levels and a host of other things that when the simple things don’t work, need to be looked at a little deeper.

This is where I am at right now.

How many calories are you eating daily? And what method are you using to weigh/measure intake?

@QuadQueen ya know, at a certain point we’re gonna need to all chip in and actually pay you for the generous advice you give us. I know you do this for a living lol, maybe it’s time to expand into some online coaching.

But until you charge me (and probably after), thanks for the advice!

I was at 1800 per day, measure was scales/cups ounces, recorded in cronometer for accuracy.

An Overblown/overhyped topic in most cases.

RE: glucose utilization. You mentioned your fasting BG was around 110. This really isn’t that high considering anything under 100 after 10 hours fasting is “normal”. If insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism was casing the problems you are attributing to it you would see much higher numbers and likely and A1c greater than 7. From personal experience, insulin sensitivity has less effect on weight than total calories (elevated BG has a host of other complications so definitely figure that out)

I agree with @T3hPwnisher - chances are the culprit is much more basic - what is your calorie intake exactly and if you aren’t losing anything than it’s likely higher than your maintenance levels (almost all reputable meta analyses of data on calorie intake corroborates this). Maybe you have over estimated your basal metabolic rate?
Do you consume alcohol? If so do you account for all the calories in that?

See above answer for calories. Again, I have tried simple for at least a year in many different methods, none of which have worked. I get that the majority of people on here might not agree, but I feel like I am in a space that I need more information. I am also not sure I agree with the 10% not being significant, because the research I have looked up and continue to look up, say it is pre diabetic, which is not a good thing.

My calorie intake for my weight and height was over 2200 for maint. I have tried 1500/1800 with no movement. It’s pretty hard to over estimate basal metabolic rate when you put in the correct info. I have a background (too many years ago) in health, which is why I am digging deeper than just ‘lower calories, higher exercise, hit your protein’ answers. eg; I have excessive Iron in my bloodstream, which is being stored in my organs, which also leads to health issues, things I wouldn’t have known without getting tested. HBa1c while not at extremely high levels is high. And the levels that are given in modern western medicine as ‘ideal or normal’ are far to broad. So it would be my thought process that 5.7% is high because the range should be tighter.

I would not agree that insulin sensitivity has less effect on weight, given that if you are unable to regulate your insulin in a normal way, the storage of glucose which in a normal person shouldn’t be considered ‘excess’ is stored in adipose more quickly and readily. But as you say, that’s the goal of this analysis, to figure it all out. I know there is something going on that is not right, because of my history of training/sports/ activity. Yup getting older apparently slows you down, but not like what I am feeling, so I want to for my own sanity understand it.

I do not drink, often. When I say that I drink once a month if that, so alcohol is not something that is a contributing factor.

Really enjoying the back and forth, makes me think more about what I am currently doing.
Thanks

You’d be the first human alive born with an inordinate ability to thwart the laws of thermodynamics if this were true.

Good luck with your DNA test - let us know if you find anything actionable. I wish you a speedy recovery.

P.S in case your DNA results come back saying there’s nothing wrong with your genetics that would cause you to stay fat… there is a multi-billion dollar industry built upon the ability to lose weight without exercise (weight watchers, jenny craig, etc.).
