(Un)Official 2023 T-ransformation Challenge

It’s hilarious to me how vegans get so much grief for trying to make meat substitutes (veggie bacon, burgers, etc.) and then the same people calling them out are over there chowing down on their Paleo cookies and keto bread. Same thing, guys. SAME THING.

@QuadQueen my wife just suggested i switch from heavy whipping cream to coconut oil in my coffee, fot common sense (to her) reasons.
Does that correspond to what you’re saying about healthy fats? Macros for both are about the same - basically 100% fat.

Exactly!! From a healthy fat perspective, coconut oil is all saturated and has none of the benefits of the CLA that the fat in the heavy cream has. If you’re going to move away from cream, go to a straight up MCT oil, not a sub-par coconut oil. Regardless of what the internet has led us all to believe, coconut oil will not save the world! Lol

Oh wait, so heavy whip is better than coconut oil unless I’m buying MCT?
So I want unsaturated fats?

Sounds like we all seriously need a lesson in this. @QuadQueen where would you recommend we go to brush up?

Been gaining in strength. A little bit in size. Weight stalled because my eating stalled. Working through a few injuries. I probably pushed too hard right out of the gates since this is the first time I really have ever lifted weights. However the rehab seems to be working as intended. I’m happy with my progress and nutrition. Did a wellness visit and all markers were in the expected ranges. Pushing hard for the next 8 weeks on gaining. Just stocked up on groceries and am ready to add muscle and weight. Currently at 171-172 and am trying to get to 175.

Adding CLA to my regime of creatine/dextrose (old Universal Torrent formula)/protein in college single-handedly helped me gain about 10lbs of lean muscle in one semester. Doubt I could do that now, but I put CLA up there with creatine in terms of cheap effective supplements

Hey hey let me just clarify really quick @Andrewgen_Receptors : Supercardrives was eating whipped cream whereas I’m referring here to using heavy whipping cream in my coffee.
Where I buy groceries (HEB in TX, US) - and I recognize this varies across countries and perhaps parts of the US - whipped cream is a heavily sugared product which may or may not contain actual dairy products, and is sold/served cold. It probably has fat too but is mostly sugar.
Heavy whipping cream is just the milkfat skimmed off the top of a vat of fresh cow’s milk.
(I’m confident mine is more processed than that, but that’s basically it - pure fat from cow’s milk, ostensibly). A VERY different product from whipped cream!

To further clarify: it was Cool Whip: not whipped cream.

At least whipped cream is just that: cream. Cool Whip is

Thank you! I didn’t want to hbe to explain this.

Oh thats right! I had identified the contents of Supercar’s meal, but the wrong name.
Should have known because @Cyrrex takes it IV :sweat_smile::rofl:

Edit as i remember more detail: cool whip is the brand; whipped topping is the product; its called topping because its not closely related enough to actual cream.

Yeah, it only works if it is 90% corn syrup and artificial oils.

That’s like when they make “cheese food” or “cheese spread” - it’s not actually cheese (looking at you Kraft American singles - stop acting like cheese).

Ever notice how they are “Froot Loops” and not “Fruit Loops”?

This is a great read

Have to put this on the list.

I also recommend “Metabolical” by Lustig (on kindle unlimited at the moment)

I’m not necessarily going to say one is better than the other, but heavy cream does offer more nutrients and micronutrients along with a more varied fatty acid portfolio. Neither one is what I would call a healthy fat and both should be used in moderation. I truly don’t think anyone needs to be adding tablespoons of coconut oil to their coffee. This isn’t the “Bulletproof” miracle so many have put their hopes in. I also don’t think that chugging heavy cream is healthy, but I digress…

Here’s a fairly good and easy to understand comparison of coconut oil vs heavy cream: Nutrition Comparison: Heavy Cream Vs Coconut Oil

My general fat recommendations, based both on what I’ve seen in 18 years of practice and on a bulk of the research: focus your intake on heart healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts, nut butters), choose lean or grassfed meats most of the time, low fat dairy (if you’re going to be eating/drinking boatloads of it); limit intake of super fatty (not grassfed meats), processed fats, saturated fats (coconut oil, butter, cream, etc.) and avoid hydrogenated and trans fats that aren’t found in nature (meat/dairy have some naturally occurring trans fats and that’s one of the reasons we limit intake of the super fatty stuff).

Is heavy cream bad? Is butter bad? Is coconut oil bad? No, on all fronts but as is the case with ALL things - the devil is in the dose.

@TrainForPain does that help explain it a little? If not, let me know what other info you’re looking for.

I do want to provide, as an interesting aside, that there is at least a solid precedent for heavy cream in bodybuilding

My wife agrees, thus the change. A year or two ago i was chugging it, to good effect in fact - though i don’t exactly look like Gironda!

Haha good stuff. The nuance of course was in the other components of my diet and training. But i digress too.

Anyway, Thank You for that writeup @QuadQueen! Very informative. I have much room to improve my diet, though its not bad.

And… how do you take your coffee?
