If i get my wish, Nate will win middleweight, I hope he gets healthy.
I like Nate but I’m predicting that he is out d/t his ankle injury; therfore, bringing back a masked man. Can’t wait until Monday! My shared thought. Later~ SB

Am I the only one who is not at all impressed with these guys’ ground skills? …
I think Diego Sanchez is the only fighter that has showed true ground skills. Bobby didn’t need to use ground work in his first fight. Koscheck kind of took submissions out of the game–that’s the whole idea of LnP, which sadly, is common among many wrestlers. As for Bobby and Stephan, I was very unimpressed by ground skills, outside of the reversals. I know he is primarily a striker, but didn’t Stephan have a BJJ background as well?
Oh well. Just wait for Diego to fight again. Forrest Griffin is also a pretty good submissions fighter. Florian has looked good in training sessions, but that’s not gametime. We’ll see…
Have to agree with Terumo here. After the fight between Southworth and Bonnar, I do believe it was fixed to try and first of all get rid of Booby (revenge for “I wish I had a set of nuts” Leben) and secondly to boost morale for Team Coutore, who cant hang with Team Lidell. Like Soutworth or not he at the very minimum deserved a third round. As for who is returning, just please dont let it be Leben!!!

I don’t know jack about MMA, but I have been surprised that there’s very little kicking going on in the cage. Is this typical?
Pride FC tends to have more kicking than does UFC. UFC tends to have more grapplers than strikers. More time on the ground or sizing-up opponent = less standup action. These stall tactics are more common in UFC because of the rules system. Wonder why Josh Koscheck got a unanimous decision? In the UFC, making a takedown into your opponents guard and maintaining that position is considered “dominant.” Hence, a fighter gets points for what we call “lay n’ pray.” Under Pride rules, both rounds of Leben-Koscheck would have been scored 10-10. Because of this, fighters that are proficient at standup are often hesitant to throw strikes, as it may set them up for a takedown. I think this might have played into the Leben fight, although he might as well have let his hands go–he got taken down anyway.
Simply put, if you wanna see some good striking, look around for clips of guys like Wanderlei Silva, Mirko Filipovic, Ernesto Hoost, or even Chuck Liddell. (The first two guys are Pride fighters, the third is a K1 guy.) If you wanna see some kicks-from-hell, check out this link:
super saiyan- to expand on what tenumo said: when you kick, it sets you up for a takedown that’s a bit easier since you’re on one leg. This is esp true of high kicks.
So, the guys who can really kick, save it for when it can do max damage. The guys who are not, will only do it rarely.
For the most part, most MMA fighters are not great kickers, so they won’t do it much.
Pride has more kickboxers, who are obviously very good at kicking, and they’ll do it more.
Also, when you look for fights, look for Mirko Crocop, as he’s more commonly known as. Crocop= croatian cop.
There’s a lot of stuff on P2P networks, and there’s a lot of good dvd’s out there that are reasonably priced.
What i’m surprised at is their total lack of using the fucking JAB
Jesus christ they don’t jab for shit.
They have ground skills, but just stick to the basics…
I’m not afraid of your 1000 submissions that you have practiced only once, but of your 1 submission that you have practiced a 1000x.
Kos did a good job of doing what he was supposed to. Nullifying someone else’s submission attempts. That was his plan/job, period and he did good.
Admittingly it’s boring but it IS a skill itself.
If koscheck added more skills to his game he’d be a very good fighter.
If leben got his mentality straight, and worked his wrestling a bit more (not to become a wrestler, but to get a better idea of how a wrestler attacks and how to defend it), he’d be a dominant force.
From what I’ve heard, Nate has a GREAT all around game, but it’s SO unfortunate that we fans are missing out on seeing him in action.
that said, Bobby didn’t get robbed, neither did the Winner… THE FANS got robbed of a third round! That was the most decent fight we’ve had all season!
I hope this show gets some more seasons, because weekly MMA fights on CABLE is really really really spoiling me.
I’m such an ultimate fighter nut hugger right now it’s ridiculous. I finally understand how people are all into “american idol” and shit.

x2, all the way, Xen. Stephan was the only fighter on the show that I saw utilize the jab as it should be used by a standup fighter, but he never found his range. That is pretty common in MMA, though, as getting close enough to land a jab usually result in getting hit with leg strikes. In other words, for many MMA fighters, the jab isn’t so much used as a strike as it is a means of backing up your opponent. I think the jab would have helped Leben in his fight. Throwing haymakers or high-kicks is a sure way to get taken down by a grappler, but the jab would have backed up Kos, and you can’t shoot when you’re being actively forced back. Plus, for inexperienced UFC fighters, multiple jabs will often force an opponent into the cage, setting him up for a power shot. That would have been my game plan if I was Leben–back up Kos with short jabs, and stay ready to sprawl. Eventually, Koscheck would have found his back on the cage, and he would have been hit hard, either by knee-to-uppercut sprawl defending the takedown or by a power-hand cross.
Anyhow, does anyone have any predictions for the winners? I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Diego Sanchez will take the MW contract, and Forrest Griffin will take the LHW contract.
Very disappointing show. I watched the first two episodes all the way through and was almost enraged to see them trying to make it some lame-ass Real World clone focusing on drama between the guys instead of their training. I can’t watch the show , but I have one of my friends call me when the fight at the end of each episode begins. And i was happy to see Leben beaten. what a cockgobbler.
My friend got a purple belt about 10-11 yrs ago, and he told me 2 interesting stories. One, he was at a Gracie seminar, and one of the “Rs” Royce, Royler, Renzo, whatever was presenting. Some in the crowd were complaining that he wasn’t showing a ny “secret” ninja moves, or anything fancy at all. Just the basics. When they told him this, he said that a) there are no secret moves and that b)until you can apply and defend a move perfectly, from every position and from very angle on diff’t kinds of opponents, you are not ready to move on to other moves and anything flashy is worthless without a solid foundation.
So, don’t try to be Sakuraba unless you’re advanced.
Also: to get his belt, he had to roll with one of the Gracies, I don’t remember who. SImply put, Renzo or whoever told him: I am going to submit you with a kimura. All you have to do is defend. From the kimura to a gi choke to a triangle choke, etc. My friend got submitted every time and with every move. Needless to say, my friend was not able to submit him but, based on his defense, he was awarded the purple belt.
-Did i miss an episode? Cuz i didn’t see Diego fighting, let alone practicing. Just him bogarting the asparagus and doing yoga and stuff. Oh, and getting sh$tfaced.

Yup. Diego submitted Alex Karalexis via rear naked choke. Complete domination; all on the ground. He is actually a pretty accomplished MMA fighter, already. And for the record, I never saw Diego getting faced–didn’t he pass out a quarter of the way through the evening?
I just saw Diego at a previous king of the cage on video, he won by armlock. He was very dominating in that fight so I would look for him to make it to the finals of this show based on what I have seen from the others.
