UFC 79

thanks for the link, donut.

A left counterhook out of the blue is what Vanderlei should be afraid of most. As far as concerning conditioning, apparently it is already 3:0 for Vandy.

As mentioned this card is epic.

I was really looking forward to the Hughes and Sera fight, but GSP vs. Hughes might be even better. Hughes is a legend and GSP is well on his way. GSP is freakishly well rounded in all areas of fighting, physically he has very little weaknesses. With all that said however i’m still going with Hughes in this fight. In his last match against GSP like metioned he tried to stand way to much with GSP. This time around i really don’t see him trying that at all. Look for Hughes to be extremely focused on getting the take down. I’m gonna say Hughes grinds this one out and wins by decision.

Now since i’m to broke to dish out 40 bucks to watch it on my pathetically small tv. I’m gonna have to find someone with a larger tv or maybe just find a sports bar or something. Because i really want to see these fights.

Watching it makes me much more confident in my pick of Wandy. Chuck is still do the same old same old back at The Pit right after a loss, Wandy has had a lot of time off and reinvigorated himself.
Wanderlei’s attitude is very good. He’s humble and putting his head down to work, and not acting like he’s hot shit a la Cro Cop. And that training is insane!

Thanks for the link. Now I don’t know which way to lean. Chuck is in good shape – where’s his gut? – and seems more focused than ever.

The only fight I’m confident enough to bet on is Hughes, and that’s only because he’s such a big underdog.

I wonder, is it possible that, as with many other Pride VS UFC fights, there will be a huge difference in size? Chuck is taller, but I also mean in terms of cutting weight.

The Pride fighters always seem to come in smaller, as if they’ve not cut much weight for the weigh ins previously while the UFC fighters come in almost a weight class heavier on event day. (See Forrest Griffin, GSP, etc…)

I would like to note that they never once referred to Extreme Couture in Wandy’s special. Couture’s name is not to be mentioned right now by anyone on a UFC broadcast, lol.

Chuck looks the leanest he has in his last 3 fights at the weigh in. It was a pretty entertaining, after weighing in Chuck took a lot of time to put his clothes on for the staredown. He walks over, and Wandy rips off his shirt and gets in his face. Wandy does the fake headbutt “i’m going to make you flinch” move, Chuck backs up and gives him the finger and Wandy charged him. It was pretty entertaining.

Also, Tony DeSouza has the most amazing facial hair in all of MMA.

I have never been a big fan of Lidell fighting style. Everytime he wins I almost feel like it was a win by omission. I hope Wandy throws him around like a rag doll. Wandy in the second by submission.

Hughes over GSP. Basically, IMO if Hughes loses this fight it is going to be mentally brutal for him and will bring him closer to being finished. He better be in prime form.
Hughes by split.

I am picking Soko over Machida. Don’t want to predict how, though.

It’s good to see Guillard back, pick him for the am interested to see Palelia fight.

This really isn’t too bad of an undercard. It will be interesting to see Irvin fight again and Lister’s bout should be entertaining. Hopefully these two will get broadcast.

I’m looking forward to this one.

Funny, in Silva’s All-Access they only show him finishing off asian guys, as if Pride was only about japan. “On the other side of the world”, as they said. As if Wandy didn’t fight Henderson, Mezger or Jackson, guys which UFC fans would know!

I’m so excited about the top 2 fights. For me, Silva v Liddell will be electric!

I have to strongly disagree with Sokodju v Machida being a dream matchup. Sokodju is so unproven. All he’s proven is that he can bang hard and defend a takedeown from a sloppy looking Arona. What happens when he gets in trouble? With only 5 fights and already fighting the elite, it’s only a matter of time before he gets fucked. Machida will frustrate the shit out of him, and I think he wont have the answers.

Other than those fights, i’m not really interested. Just hoping for some entertaining matchups.

Hughes gets ko’d by flying knee is my prediction.

I’m thinking about putting money on one of the top 2 fights on the card, but I honestly don’t feel confident about any particular pics, or at least not the ones that offer good payoffs.

BetUS has Wanderlei -140 and Chuck +110. I think Wandy’s going to take it but you’d have to put up a big pile of money to win anything significant.

They have GSP -240 and Hughes +190 which, like you said, offers a great payoff on Hughes if he wins, but I honestly think GSP is just going to be ON his game tonight and is going to frustrate Hughes the whole damn time.

Damn.

Maybe I’ll think about sacking up and putting a few hundred behind Wand.

If anyone is picking against the betting lines, Hughes looks like a solid pick. I have seen him around +200 which is preposterous.
True, Soko is a bit green at this point, but everyone (everyone) from Team Quest who has trained with him has said he is an absolute monster and the future of the 205 lbs weight class. While he may be a little young to be facing someone who has been doing this as long as Machida,I don’t think Machida an prevent his takedowns and I have serious doubts that he can submit Soko from his back.

Yeah, I love how Couture has been wiped away b/c of the dispute. They did the same thing with Shamrock when he left a few years ago. Then he came back and it was all good.

Kind of ignorant that UFC won’t mention Couture’s name, but White is taking a page out of the Vince McMahon handbook on this one and if someone does something to piss him off, he’ll just refuse for anyone in the company to speak of him.

Pat Milietch gets the same treatment.

Is anyone from NY going to the Matt Serra VIP Viewing of UFC 79 at the garden tonight? I’m going to the Q&A and hopefully I’ll get some pictures with him, too.

This is a very big fight, because a Soko win over the best defensive fighter in MMA erases most doubts, and a Machida win makes him a clear cut title contender next year. Team Quest also has been raving about Soa Palaei (sp?), apparently it was enough to somehow get him on the main card so he better deliver.

Absolutely. A loss will be relatively devastating for Machida from a timing stand point.

I am excited for the Palelei fight. I hope he brings it as I am basically don’t care for Sanchez.

Anyone know what time this starts?

10:00 pm eastern.

well, I’ve got to admit I’m not real excited by this one. Silva vs Liddell might be good though it would have been great a year ago… I hope Silva wipes the mat with Chuck “the belly thruster” Liddell but it’s hard to call. Chuck has that mutant unpredictable wild hairy ass punch thing going on. Silva looks to have been training hardcore and righteously as seen on All Access (and with Exreme Couture). Also hope GSP beats the living dogshit out of arrogant Hughes. That guy gives redneck farmer types a bad name.
