Try Out For Football

If nothing else, just put everyone else ahead of you on the depth chart in a kimura or kneelock or something. You’ll instantly shoot up to starter in no time, and you’ll be doing two badass things at the same time. Go for the walk on status, if you dont make it it’s at least a helluva story to tell your kids one day.

Xen-

Go for it. You have nothing to lose. I was a walk-on my freshmen year of college at Oklahoma State. Tons of great memories. I got to play alongside fellow freshmen like All-Pro DT Jamal Williams (Chargers) and All-Pro CB RW McQuarters (played for the 49ers and Bears).

Your stats are good for a CB or even a FS, but a SS should ideally be 200+. Most defenses today, espicially a defense like USC, use the SS like an OLB.

That said, my concern is that you have never played real football before. Do you even know how to hit someone?? Being a football player absolutely has nothing to do with your weight room numbers or how fast you run- its about being good in football. Case in point, at OSU a few years back we had a DE named Greg Richmond. He was 6’3, 240 and ran in the 4.6-4.7 range. He was WEAK. His max bench was 275 and max squat about 350. Hell our kicker was stronger than him. Greg plays for the Eagles now because he was a damn good football player.

Regardless, good luck with it. The best way to impress or get noticed is to go 110% on every drill and play and try to get some good licks in.

Requirement #1: SPEED

Everything else is secondary.

Coaches don’t care how much you can bench–they care how well you can play.

Go to tryouts and see what you’re up against. At USC they’re only the #2 team in the country. LOL

I did this 31 years ago at the Division II school I attended. My impression was: holy shit! I was literally taking the field with high school all-stars from across my state. They were faster than hell, stronger than hell, and meaner than hell.

But you’ll never forget the experience–and it makes great cocktail conversation when you’re an old fart–take it from me.

Spend a couple of days learning to kick and transfer to Florida State. You could probably start.

Good Luck.

I would definitely encourage you to try out. Is there a downside to trying? But…at the D1 level everyone is fast and strong. My buddy was all New England in football and baseball. He walked on to the UVA team in the mid nineties as a safety carrying about 195 Lbs with really low bodyfat. They were fairly good then, all top twenty finishes, but no USC.

Well, they are running tackling drills and my friend comes up against Tony Dingle, who was later drafted as a defensive tackle. My friend is thinking thought there was no way Dingle would catch him. He woke up about a minute later looking out his earhole. You have to realize that these guys are extremely good/fast athletes with the ability to just explode. It never hurts to try something though, you may have the talent.

i actually just did the same thing. 19 yo went out for my college and made it. The big difference is that its a d-3 school and I’m slightly bigger than you (6’5" 300lb)

My suggestion is definitely go talk to one of the coaches if you can. If they see some talent in you before hand they are much more likely to pay attention when you step up at tryouts.

Also be prepared that if you do make the team you might not play what you want to. The coaches decide what you do and they will tell you what you are going to do.
The last thing I will say is be prepared to put on some weight. I don’t care how strong your are, if you smoked by a 280 pound guy when you are as small as you are it’s gonna hurt alot. The coaches would probably get you to put on between 20 and 40 pounds.

Good luck though,
Monster

Xen…does this Scott Ware fella, with a street sign, stand a chance against a bare-handed Fedor?

Let me put it another way, you’re an MMA fighter bro, why would you call a football player baddest motherfucker on the planet (or state…), when there are pro players who tried their hand at NHB in small promotions and got their ass handed to them?

Xen that’s awesome you know Scott. I played football with him before he transfered to USC. I was with him when he opened the first letter from them. I got to train with the guy 5 days a week so I can give you a pretty good idea of what you’re looking at here. You’ve seen him so you know he’s a big guy. 6’3 220-230 probably 6% bf… just an absolute machine. 4.42 40, 35" vert. I watched him go from about 190 to 230 in the two years I played with him. Truly a gifted athlete.

I’d say if you’re serious about playing at that level you’d need to work on your 40 time. If you ran a 4.6 in HS I’m sure you’d be able to improve on that. Technique is a huge part of this test. I saw a lot of people drop 2 tenths after only a couple months of practicing their start. Yes these were mostly linemen but it just goes to show what is possible. You’re weight is also a big factor. Football is about momentum and half the equation for momentum is mass. You might be strong and fast but you’re gonna get blown up by someone just as fast, just as strong but 20 pounds heavier than you. Its just the way it works. Whatever you do, best of luck and I’d say slap Scott in the face for me but he already dropped out to get ready for the draft… Dumb ass… And congrats on attending USC. That’s a huge accomplishment in itself!

I agree with everyone else, if you want to do it go for it. You need to understand that you will most likely fail though. I certainly don’t mean to be rude, but that is reality. If your numbers meant anything for football, every good high school football player in the country would play D-1. Instead only like 1% make it to that level. Speed would be your only ally, that is if you had it. My opinion is that 4.6 is slow at a school like USC, unless you want to be a defensive end. So, I think you should try it but understand it is EXTREMELY unlikely (like getting struck by lightning sitting in your living room unlikely).

40 speed = overrated in FB. You need “make up” speed at DB and quickness. Yes, a 4.6 would be very slow for a person your size, but you probably never trained for speed which means you could probably shave .1 to .2 seconds off your time if you work your ass off. BTW, a 4.6 is not as slow as some of you think. Most NFL LB’s run their 40’s in that time with the truly elite ones running it lower than that. It’s all about your ability to take good angles, accelerate in short bursts and change direction quickly while being able to anticipate your opponent’s next move.

Most NFL LBs also carry at a minimum 50 pounds more weight. Would you rather be hit by a 180 pound guy running a 4.6 or 230-260 pound guy running the same time. Physics hurt.

This thread will fade off in to the sunset like his last one claiming how he could be so rich and famous yet he yearns to be an elite special forces soldier…

The guy is nineteen, give him a break. I am twenty four and I still have not got a clue what I am gonna do with my life and possibly never will.

Good luck to ya Xen.

I’m 29 and I still want to be an astronaut when I grow up.

Or a trapeze artist.

Or a superhero.

Or a cowboy. Yeah, a cowboy! Didn’t they just make a movie about cowboys that was supposed to be really good and stuff?

Does it need to go somewhere? He’s just thinking out loud, and asked for some help. What are these forums for anyway?

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but what happened? Did you actually try out or give up?

A guy like this usually can walk on…

He’s strong enough, and will get faster being around all that speed.

He’s not going to play soon, but even if he was a football stud coming out of highschool no guarantee he was going to play soon anyway.
