One more thing Xen, I’ve noticed your post about wanting to become this, or do that, or have a carreer you can kick peoples ass in…etc. It seems you waffle around a lot about stuff you would like to do.
How is this any different that a ‘what if’? THIS will be ‘the’ dedication of your life up to this point if you do it.[/quote]
Really. College football at a D-III school is no joke. USC?
Now, I’ll never say to not go for it. But just be aware of the commitment there. They run you- all the time. No more of your own workouts- you do theirs. Its a huuugggeeee commitment. Plus, the mental aspect is alot also. It ain’t high school ball- their playbook is probably the size of a phonebook. I don’t think they play a 3- deep like I did in high school!
But if you wanna try, go for it. Just be ready to go balls to the wall for it.
I say go for it too. Like other people said the worst that could happen is you don’t make the roster… or you could be on a D1 powerhouse’s roster. I think it is definetly worth it to try out man.
Just a perspective from someone who has played for a D1 team: This is pretty obvious, but if you haven’t played the game before at a competitive level, then you have to be abnormally athletic in order to make it.
The open-tryouts you’re referring to attempting are extremely tough to get noticed in. It’s one thing to be a recruited walk-on, but entirely another to just show up and stand-out amongst 300 others kids who are showing up too.
You absolutely just need to focus on your speed and agility, those are the tests that they’re going to give you when you try out. I know PSU didn’t have any weight-room stuff for the open tryout guys, just all speed, agility, change of direction and actual position-based-skill testing. If you can, try to find out exactly what they’ll be testing at the tryouts. A 40 yard dash and pro-agility are probably a given, but there’s always others that I’m sure are different from school to school.
Just as one example of hope, a guy on PSU’s team with me, Ethan Kilmer, never played footall in high school or his first 2 years of college, and transferred to PSU his sophomore year. Went to an open tryout, made the team, did 1 year of special teams, and spent his senior year as a starting wide receiver on this past years Orange Bowl Champion team.
So, maximize your speed, and give it a shot, you never know…
Well, I’ve already been training for it. One of my best friends is assistant coach for the secondary at the #2 school in CIS. He’s been showing me what I’m supposed to be doing as far as coverage and running me through different drills.
I’ve been working on my agility and lateral speed more so than my linear speed.
Rockscar, I basically was going through what everyone else my age goes through at some point. I was afraid of becoming my father. Working a job I hate to buy things I don’t need just to keep up with people that I don’t like. While I might not have the supermodel girlfriend and the pasta rocket… I know what I’d like to do with my life and my eventual goals. And I’d rather be happy than just have ‘things’.
In short, I got over it.
This is just a detour…and not even that, football is something I’ve always wanted to do, but I never had the chance to. I see an opportunity so I’m going to take it rather than wonder what if.
Regardless I’m in great shape, I’m strong as fuck (not where I want to be at yet but close), and pretty quick. Hopefully this will workout.

Oh, and thats not a typo… 1 weighted chin up with three 45# plates and one 35# plate.

In this case it will be the experience of a lifetime. You will grow a lot from it. Good luck.
Remember once you get some snot bubbling and pin your ears back, you can start really puttin the hurt out.
And if you are a speed merchant, this will help all the more.
One of my buddies from junior high just walked on to USC’s team this year after playing at a Kansas JC. Everyone tried to get him to accept scholarship offers from Pitt, Liberty, etc., but he wanted to play for USC and he did it.
There is a difference, though. He is a DT and well over 300. And, he also played football. But these type of things are possible, they’re just not likely. You really have nothing to lose, so you may as well try it.
I know the former starting strong safety Scott Ware. Baddest motherfucker on the planet. Rumor on campus is he shanked someone, but thats neither here nor there. But I have seen him drunk on our “Fraternity row”…suddenly, he decides to pull a street sign out of the ground. He pulled it out like you would a toothpick out of a sandwich…
In a fit of alcohol driven fury, he then proceeds to chase somebody down the street with it. I asked him later what the hell he was doing, for him to reply that the guy he was attempting to bludgeon with the sign had stolen his friend’s beer…
Not a bad friend, I say, if he is willing to go that far to return liquor to its rightful owner. Sort of a drunken Robin Hood.
I actually have shirt somewhere that says, “Scott Ware will fuck you up”
Wow. I’m REALLY glad I went to Humboldt State, where the worst thing that’ll happen for say, bogarting the bong or stealing a beer is the “mysterious” dissapearance of one’s lighter.

Sounds like a former shotputter and hurdler I played rugby with. He ripped a street sign out of the ground and he punched a sign of the pole.

Did he post a thread here a few months back about a “Legal Cockblock”? If so, we all owe him an apology.
Xen, go for it man. The last thing you are gonna want is 20 years from now to look back and say that you had the opportunity to take a shot at it, but chickened out. Besides, if you don’t make it, you are in the same position as if you hadn’t tried, and if you do make it, well, more power to you.
I say give it a whirl - but be careful. Seriously.
If you aren’t used to playing, your awareness will be low and you won’t be looking where you should be looking.
Big, powerful athletes moving at exceptionally high speeds can get you hurt - especially if you never see it coming. Fullbacks/H-backs would love to see a guy like you with his head turned - and they weight twice as much as you do.
Football is fast, obviously - if you don’t turn your head, you can get plowed in a second.

Thanks mom.
Jk, thats a very important thing that I must admit I didn’t think about. (possibility of injury)

So do I have a chance (in hell?) or should I keep going for MMA :-p (I’ll be working to make it on TUF 4 if this doesn’t work out).

Are you really going to let someone tell you no?
Stop wasting your time on anonymous Internet approval and start practicing.

Ya I"m waaaaayyy too light. But we have a couple corner’s who are my weight, only diff is that they’re taller (by 2 inches). and I think I make that diff up with my vertical.
We’ll see. I"m going for it, I just want to know my odds.

Walking on at USC with NO Football experience and your physical stats? I’d say your odds are next to impossible. Seriously though, don’t let that stop you. What’s the worst that can happen? You don’t make it on the scout team. Just be prepared to sacrafice…a LOT.
Definitely do it if you feel like you can handle the sacrifice. I flirted with the idea of training to try and walk on in a year or so, but decided I wouldn’t be able to handle the time issues. Good luck in that, or the MMA stuff, whatever you decide.
