Trump: 2020 and Beyond

The actions of the GOP before, during, and after the election have nothing to do with the first and everything to do with the second.

The type of things they tried, continue to try, and attempts to fix future elections to ensure they can’t lose should be shouted down from the rooftops by all regardless of political leanings, historic actions by the party, or disdain for the ideas of anyone else.

I have a tendency to believe that the former (populism) can wrap all the way around to the latter, much like the extreme left and right (globally speaking) essentially mirror each other.

In other words, I think populism is often used in general more as marketing to get into power than actual policy intended to empower the masses.

Populism tricks the masses into thinking they are fighting a ruling elite by inventing an easy enemy to defeat. For the Nazis and many others, it was the Jews.

While also being populist.

You might be right. I just have a really hard time believing that there are that many complete conspiracy theory nuts driving the party from the constituents seat.

But what do I know, I thought it was self evident that Qanon was bullshit and the world was spherical.

First of all you’re right. It is self evident that Qanon and all the rest is bullshit. Second, I reckon it’s still not a majority of Republicans who believe in it, but there’s a critical mass now that has pushed the party over the tipping point. Right now it’s alarming to see the non reaction going on within the Republican party to the dumpster fire that is Marjorie Taylor Greene. This woman is bad news. I don’t care if I agreed with every one of her policy positions, I could never align myself with her or anyone even half as bad.

There was a brief couple of weeks in December when I was hopeful the party would come back to its senses, but that hope is gone.

That’s where this is going. From the new Republican party pit pull:

It’s all right there; Rothschilds, Jews, space lasers…etc…

On second thought, I’m going to apologize to all pit pulls for making that reference above. I’ve known many pit bulls who were great dogs and it’s unfair to associate them with MTG.

It’s also disconcerting that disregarding for a moment the racism, anti - Semitism, Islamophobia, and general hate mongering, that someone this fucking stupid got elected to Congress.

Yep I got this all wrong. I thought Republicans would dismiss the conspiracy and lunacy minded side of Trumpism if he lost. Then I thought once a few recounts don’t go his way. Then when no court cases or the Supreme Court. Surely after the capitol attack they will denounce all this shit and attempt to return to sanity.

No look what state legislatures are doing, tweeting, etc. it’s like they’ve all been taken over by a combination of Alex Jones types and willing to eat their own (attacking Republican governors, secretary’s of state, etc).

When you won’t call out someone in your party no matter what they do maybe this is the level of chaos that descends upon the party. For groups that say they hate the left, liberals, etc they are doing everything in their power to make sure Dems are the most appealing choice.

“Former President Donald Trump’s five impeachment defense attorneys have left a little more than a week before his trial is set to begin, according to people familiar with the case, amid a disagreement over his legal strategy”.

“A person familiar with the departures said that Trump wanted the attorneys to argue there was mass election fraud and that the election was stolen from him rather than focus on the legality of convicting a president after he’s left office. Trump was not receptive to the discussions about how they should proceed in that regard”.

You know, it makes “sense” that Trump would want to continue the lie.

He has plenty of Trumpublicans ready and willing to go right along with it. He knows he won’t be “convicted”…so he may as well continue the lie.

Branding. Just keep telling people the same thing over and over until they believe it.

If anybody asks about substance, just tell them about the last thing (huge march, big rally!) no matter how unrelated.

I knew we were doomed when people were like “That made it all the way to the Supreme Court!”. Without knowing whether it was the state or federal Supreme Court, or acknowledging that it got laughed out of the aforementioned court.

Like when the local high school football team “made it to states!” never mind that there is no analogy.

No question. It’s alarming to see a lot of things happening to and within the GOP right now, but she’s way up there next to the refusal to right the party after Trump’s nonsense.

I thought SURELY the capitol mob would force people in the party to turn around.

We get what we deserve sadly.

100%. I simply don’t even know what to say anymore. The democrats look downright stable and reasonable right now. I don’t think I’ve ever uttered those words before… I’m not even sure I thought it was possible to say such a thing.

Do WE?

I think about job applicants, myself included. I see a job and I also note what the requirements are and they typically make sense. You may need a certain degree, license, certificate as well as some experience. If I were hiring someone for a particular job I would have requirements for anyone I would consider for the job. Even in other areas of life we have certain demands of people. I want my doctor to have an actual medical degree and experience in dealing with whatever issue I have. I want my mechanic to have been properly trained and also have experience. This all seems normal.

How is that a Lauren Boebert gets elected? No offense to anyone but she’s a HS dropout with a GED. Why would anyone believe she is equipped to deal with issues on a global scale? What is her experience? She owns a restaurant that serves crappy food? Or is it that she likes guns? Is that all it takes?

Then you have Madison Cawthorn, a 25 year old who failed out of college. What’s his experience? He worked in fast food and lied about getting accepted into the Naval Academy. Who thinks that an uneducated 25 year old is capable of dealing with issues on a federal and international level? He just became able to rent a car.

You have two people who are not qualified to do most jobs out there and yet, people thought it was a good idea to hire them to help run the country. And these are the same people who complain about career politicians. These dummies just elected people who are on that path. Even AOC went from bartender to Congress. Is this a question of WE get we deserve?

This country has an imbecile problem and I’m not sure if it’s the result of democracy but I am sure it will be its downfall. And maybe that’s not a bad thing at this point. Our politicians are supposed to represent the people but what happens when the people are idiots? We get these imbeciles in office.

That’s pretty much what I meant by getting what we deserve :joy:

Yep. Hence the reason many of us on here complained about the “just humor him” type of talk from Republicans. Our results weren’t this bad but they may be in the future. We’ve certainly set the stage for simply ignoring the results of an election because you don’t like the results.

Filibuster is next on the chopping block

Nebraska GOP censuring their senator for speaking out against certain rebulicans not certifying the vote on Jan 6th, and speaking out about the Jan 6 insurrection, and against trumps actions leading up to and on that day. Meanwhile, the national GOP apparently wont censure or publicly denounce what Marjorie taylor greene has said and stands for, and almost unanimously voted in support of keeping here on federal comittees charged with our childrens education. sweet. Trumpublican party it is.

According to a Hill / Harris X poll it looks like 64% of registered Republican voters would likely switch to a Trump led party. IMO, the number to actually do so would be less, but it would be devastating for the GoP either way.

Great, that’s just what we need

I read more into the poll, and now find it a bit suspect. One of the stats said that like 15% of Democrats would join a Trump lead party. Just that makes me take the whole thing with a large grain of salt. The poll takers are well known and used by 538, so I don’t know what to think.

Canadians thought it was bad when we elected a drama teacher as our PM. At least that guy had actual real-world job experience and a dad who’d held the position before. Seems some of the deeper-red congressional districts are just happy to elect the most deplorable, ill-equipped, moronic windbags they can find so long as there’s an “R” beside the name.
