Idaho, I only “know” you from here but I know you’re a good and honorable man, policy differences be damned. I haven’t worn the uniform but my father and closest friends have. I share your sorrow… Nothing at this point is about parties or left/right to me. This is an American issue, a whole country issue. We need to address it head on.
And Mattis is an American treasure.
Me either.
To @Alrightmiami19c, if nobody has said it yet Senate vote was 6 yes to object, 93 no (1 seat unfilled from prior term ending) . Yeses were Cruz, Hawley, a Mississippi senator, Tuberville, Marshall from KS, and one I’m missing.
Yeah, but 3 of the dead were from “medical emergencies”. Considering the age of the bulk of the participants (40-70), I reckon 2 heart attacks and a stroke, probably from the exertion of climbing more than one flight of stairs.
When there is a major earthquake, fatal heart attacks are considered part of the event death toll. No shit. They can’t figure at any given time in a major metro area that at least a few cardiac events are going on at any given time.
That’s the problem. For a long time we have tacitly accepted that as long as our party wins then only actions matter. It’s become more overt in the last 15 years or so, but before that it was still an undercurrent. My personal shot-from-the-hip wild guess as to when this started in earnest was sometime in the 90s…
Not that we haven’t had assholes in Congress for a very long time, but that for practically all of our history it was accepted by EVERYONE that character mattered in lawmakers and political leaders.
This “what happens behind closed doors is nobody’s business” attitude is in part bullshit, because what happens there defines a person’s character.
I understand the distinction, and it’s quite an important one; nevertheless, I think I have grounds to say that 4 people are dead who wouldn’t be if Trump were less of a self-serving grifter. Like many leaders with no morals, he’s quite happy to have “losers” die for him.
Not to mention the avoidable tens or perhaps hundreds of thousands of Covid-19 fatalities which can be traced to his spectacular failure last year.
I get your point, but this is a false equivalence. To find D’s or other R’s with more dignity, integrity and class than Trump is pretty fucking easy. I reckon pretty much all of them qualify if Trump is the yardstick.
Update: Senators unanimously vote down the House’s minority proposal to object to Nevada and Michigan certification. Hawley followed through on his promise to object to Pennsylvania for some reason. Obviously it failed.
Anyone who is anywhere close to center on the political spectrum (i.e. not a Zealot either way) should be incredibly embarrassed and scared by these actions and rhetoric, I know I am.
Well, you cannot stop people from PEACEBLY assembling and I think it might be a dangerous thing to actually stop it. The key here should be that they are prepared this time for an insurrection attempt should one occur again. They should be able to allow it, while keeping it far away from the inauguration.
Of course the bigger question is should Trump even be trying to incite another rally? Of course not, but don’t count on him doing the right thing. He’s still carrying on with the lies even as he’s said there’d be a smooth transfer of power. He’s vowed to keep on “fighting to MAGA”. He knows exactly what that will mean to a lot of his supporters. Violence.
Right. Fine line. Don’t want to martyr him, stoop to the level, or erode rights.
I think a nice balance would be allow the rally in area area far away from the capital, do not allow any stages or infrastructure, and have the cops be VERY heavy handed in their enforcement.
