Trolls: Characteristics and Solutions

I’ve found an abundance of this phenomenom lately in the bodybuilding forums. Misdirected newbies, skinny people with imaginary lat syndrome; they seem to have several appearances, but I started this thread to discuss what they have in common, and ways to deal with them.

Characteristics:
-They’re always right (in their minds): they may have a training age higher than 5 years, or they might just have stepped the gym firstly 2 months ago. The point is that they’ll always say they’ve done, or are doing everything right, and they don’t seem to gain weight on their sub 175 bodies (and not 175ish in contest shape).

-Everyone is a fool to them: ex. You have been lifting for over ten years, are above 250 and on your way of making damage at a high level of competition in bodybuilding. Yet they seem to argue with you as if you were starting to lift, oh yeah… and people surely couldn’t tell that you lift.

In general, they seem to underestimate the others and overestimate themselves. Every second to third person’s opinions are near to worthless, discarding every piece of evidence they can identify.

Solutions:
-Ignore them? This is personally the best thing someone could do in first instance. But I see a big disadvantage. If people like this are not shut the fuck up, this kind of population can grow potentially at a fast pace. I don’t know if this has to do with the internet massiveness, but many experienced lifters up here seem to agree with something: increasingly less people are thinking by themselves.

What you guys think about this? Does it bother you? You don’t really care and do your stuff? The thread is yours.

I agree. About a month ago the Bodybuilding section was doing well again. Now, with recent events, has been going down hill. Trolls are annoying, but you’re right about the solution. IGNORE THEM. They won’t post if no one argues with them or responds.

Trolls and/or fucking idiots (tough to decide sometimes) aren’t worth my time, so I don’t waste it…

I don’t know if they’re trolls, as much as they are incredibly misguided and arrogant.

I have yet to read a post by an '09 guy that’s relevant and coherent.

ignoring them only works if every single person on this site adheres to it.

there will ALWAYS be people that reply.

It’s impossible to ignore trolls. A successful troll, by his (its?) very nature, makes you want to respond. Short of the extreme measure of having the mods delete a troll’s account, there is really only one solution: trick them into giving you enough personal information that you can somehow track them down and decapitate them in front of their friends, families, and neighbor so that they might serve as an example to other trolls.

Or I guess we could just accept them as one of the inherent hazards of the internet.

I really agree with ignoring 'em, although I think this has the risk of not solving the underlying problem, and make this population grow. Quantity of posts has been increasing, quality is decreasing, length hasn’t varied; recent and long pointless discussions can be found on many forums. Maybe I have fallen in the mistake of replying, this is just because there are some posts that piss me off.

And I agree with ctschneider, there are some trolls/pricks/fucking idiots who are just so damn good on calling people’s attention. Your solution sounds wicked, but just imagine: wouldn’t other trolls think at least twice before writing shit, knowing that they could be seen in the real world?

Yeah, I really, really wish we could just ignore them, but somebody always ends up responding to them. Frankly, I’m pretty sure that if no one responded, they’d eventually go away - or at least be less of a nuisance.

Case in point: a certain troll recently resurfaced after a brief hiatus. Said troll made a couple of mildly inflamitory posts in a few of threads, but no one responded. Finally someone took the bait and a (smallish) shit storm ensued. It was bound to happen, but until it did, this troll’s post weren’t really messing with the equilibrium of any threads. If no one had taken the bait, the troll would have continued to do very little damage.

The thing I’m really wondering is this: why do they all seem to flock to the Bodybuilding forum? It’s rare to see one in the Strength Sports forum.

You really don’t get them on the combat sports forum either.

Troll muerto

Its hard to tell the difference really between a troll and a complete newb. The chubtuna, chikifilet, chikapotpie, or whatever kid on the steroid forum for example. I think he might be for realz.

chikapotpie. LMAO!

honestly I’ve gotten to a point where I try and curb my posts. If I see somebody who is COMPLETELY ignorant I don’t even bother to try and educate them…I know thats harsh but I got tired of saying the same sh*t over and over and over, etc.

I like to contribute and learn through discussion…and in the cases where the person is looking for advice or who is willing to learn I’ll chime in.

otherwise if they know it already…hell what can I teach em? lol

instead of arguing my point which I know is right I just go away and they can keep messing themselves up, etc…

That kid is ridiculously stupid, not a troll.

Again, I still maintain there haven’t been THAT many trolls - just THAT many guys who decided “This is gonna be the year,” put down their Men’s Health and logged on to a way more HARDKORE website.

And then it ensues…

Yeah, I too, mate. Initially, I was trying to educate those that were coming up on whatever I know just like some of the vets took their time to teach me a thing or two, but after a while you become pretty jaded.

I begin to see why lost Rainjack in Ragnarok (a.k.a why he got pissed and stopped posting) People don’t do their basic homework and they want everything peeled and spoon fed. Thats not the point at all I think.

You bring forth a sound protocol that you still have some lingering questions about and you have a discussion with other members and if lucky some vets.

In order for that discussion to even happen you must have extensive knowledge on the subject. But no, we meet the “Git Swole” generation. Whats even funnier mate is that we are in their peer group, we actually did what we preach. Sorry for the thread jack

The solution to the problem is simple.

  1. Stickies in the bodybuilding forum that people can be immediately referred to when asking dumb questions or expressing dumb opinions, and simply for newbies so that they don’t HAVE to ask dumb questions.

Examples:
*Starting Bodybuilding? Read this first.
-should contain basic information about diet (good bodybuilding foods, protein and calorie importance, and a practical guide to bodybuilding while in school/working night shift/poor)
-training (a handful of basic traditional split routines - a 3way, 4way, and 5way - as well as a list of basic bodybuilding exercises, with descriptions and clips of good form on the big ones, and key points made about the importance of working big to small, progressive overload, and various other BASIC training methods)
-and recovery (get plenty of sleep if you can, eat enough food and drink enough water to keep you going and growing, and don’t wreck your recovery abilities with sleep deprivation, drugs, or excessive alchohol consumption)

  1. Better moderation - in the form of referring beginners to the stickies and helpful articles within the site, NOT in the form of censoring longtime, supplement-buying-members of the website for voicing controversial opinions.
I say let the veterans have their place, and direct the newbies and trolls to their place.

  2. Ignoring the trolls. Probably the most important point.

Just don’t argue with the people who are clearly stupid or hopeless. Let their threads end at the original post. Period.

This is certainly the best, most balanced approach to posting here, and dealing with trolls…

Thank you for your answers guys. I feel really lucky this thread didn’t have a troll. Finally all answers surround one single point:

-Trolls posting shit should be ignored 100% to minimize potential damage.

I’ll personally try to be more indifferent and patient for people who need those kinds of traits. Sometimes it’s really difficult to shut up, specially when they throw false or even racist statements (notice that I’m a BEANER).

That is a very mature way of dealing with it, but very hard to do at times. Sometimes you don’t know they are an asshole until they have sucked you into a pointless discussion. I guess the trick is knowing when to bail.
