Triceps Pain

I have been training for almost two years but I’m mostly a beginner. I have had various mild injuries and managed to deal with them (thanks to T-Nation).

Lately (very noticeable in the last few weeks) I have some serious triceps pain after working out, usually starting the next day - just like DOMS, but it’s not soreness. Working out is fine but the next morning I can’t even do a pushup because of pain and my triceps just seem to “lock” with the pain and I can’t complete a simple pressing move (I can do 20+ pushups easily). The pain is centered close to the shoulder, at the top of the ‘horseshoe’ if you will. I feel like it’s some soft tissue thing because warming up and working out is no problem and normal day conditions are OK, too. Only under some sort of stress/stretch do I feel the pain.

I can still work out but there’s something wrong with not being able to do a push up after a day of chest and shoulder exercises (no direct triceps work). It continues, slowly fading away, in the days that follow. I’m also not using any heavy weights (bench pressing BW for example). I looked over the site/web and couldn’t quite find anything. I will go see a doctor if necessary.

Anybody has any advice/knowledge? Thanks a lot.

kinda sounds like tendonitis. ice it and give it some rest.

Since it’s centered close to the shoulder, it sounds like where the triceps are connecting (tendons). You could have a tear or something in the tendons, it would take a few weeks to heal up.

It could be something chronic like tendonitis, better go see a doctor.

I’ve been having a mild pain at the same location, associated with either dips or overhead press, not sure which. I thought maybe the deltoid insertion was irritated, but I guess triceps insertion sounds more likely. Good luck with it, your post motivates me to try to keep mine from getting worse!

Two nights ago, while i was trying to sleep, my left tricep was twiching/spasming for like an hr but then it stopped… Does anyone know the cause for it?

look into getting some ART on it

notice he said it hurts AFTER the workout. a tear would cause consistant pain and most-likely bruising.

thanks everyone for their help. I think tricep tendonitis is what it is. I will ice it and take some ibuprofen to see if that has any effects.

The only problem is that I already rested for the last 2 weeks because of sickness (only went to the gym once) and this still happened in my first workout after that. I will keep triceps involvement to a minimum for a while and see how I do with ice.

thanks again everyone.
