Travel Knife?

I have traveled all over the world over the last 20 plus years and have never found myself in a situation where a knife would be a viable self defense weapon. If you are going to use it to protect yourself against street crime it will not work. You are going to be out numbered and it will escalate the situation from maybe getting roughed up and robbed to getting killed or killing someone else. If you are worried about those that hate Americans then it wont work because it will not protect you from a drive-by or explosive devise. If you do kill someone you will be in jail for a long time awaiting trial even if it is a clear cut case of self defense just because you are a foreigner that killed a local.

I dont expect to change your mind. If you were someone I worked with I would fire you or have you kicked off my team because clearly you dont have the situational awareness to operate and cannot be trusted to have good judgment and clear thinking.

Why a tourist would need a knife for self defense makes absolutely no sense. Education would be a much more practical self defense tool in your situation. But obviously you are lacking there and it is just easier to go buy a knife.

Best of luck. I hope you dont kill someone, get yourself killed, or go to jail.

Quoted for absolute fucking truth, and God preserve the poor consular official who will have to deal with this mess.

Interesting fact, the Swiss have more guns per capita than Americans but everyone is just so nice. I was on the train talking so some uni students and they were just coming back from the compulsory military training and were in full kit with something large and automatic stowed above their heads in the baggage bays. We got to chatting. Friendly guys.

Funniest line:

Me: “Why do you guys have so many fucking guns?”
Them: “To protect our neurtraility.”

Very funny.
Reminds me of something I read somewhere…
"There is a story, possibly apocryphal but awesome nonetheless, that a ranking German (possibly the Kaiser) was visiting and watching the Swiss military on their summer maneuvers. He asked the Swiss commander, “How big a force do you command?”
The Swiss general confidently replied, “I can mobilize one million men in twenty-four hours.”
The German asked, “What would happen if I marched five million men in here tomorrow?”
The Swiss replied, “Each of my men will fire five shots and go home.”

May have even been on here, but makes me smile every time I read it.

Ewylon, look, if you’re gonna carry a knife, then make it a pocket knife with a blade less than 3". At least then you can claim it’s a tool and not an offensive weapon. Not sure if it’ll work, but you’ll have more of a chance of it working than if you’re carrying a 6" bayonet or the like.

Best way for you to avoid trouble (besides not being a dick and getting in drunken fights) is local knowledge and respecting their customs.

Also, try and pick up a bit of the local language, a lot of locals will appreciate you making the effort to converse in their native tongue rather than doing the common thing of yelling in English (note: speaking louder does NOT mean they’re more likely to understand you).

And remember, whatever you do, don’t wrap a towel round your head and run at a policeman yelling in a high pitched voice.

the only thing that you MAY (and this is pushing it)need is a dive knife if you are diving at all. I have gotten fishing line around my ankle (braided of course), and it was not a fun experience, considering i was just using a snorkel.

I’ve had to help out in a situation like this, one of my diving group managed to get his SMB tangled around him and part of a wreck we were diving. I don’t think he’d secured it properly before we went down, either way he was very glad that a few of us were carrying knives.

I think you need to walk the streets and have your ass handed to you by a 70 year old gardener with un-holy grip strength, for being such a douche guest in his country. That should teach you some humility.

I wouldn’t recommend an AK.
I got in trouble the other day for carrying one round. The founding fathers would be appalled!

How long before your cruise?

If I were you I’d start doing some asshole stretching excercises before I set off. Makes getting gang raped in prison that little bit less painful. Rather than a knife you should be looking at butt plugs.

I seriously hope you get caught with your “look at me, I’m a tough fucker” knife. It would serve you right, you idiot!

I recommend a bottle of the hottest chilli sauce you can find. That way, when you’re surrounded by a group of 5 huge, vicious uhh… italians you will drown them in a sea of fire when you piss yourself.

You’re an idiot.

I just travelled throughout Europe.

I hit the Czech Republic (both Prague itself and outside the main city in Praha 4).

I hit the Med as well (Malta).

You don’t carry weapons you dipshit.

Now I know why no locals liked me until I said ‘I’m Australian not American.’.

I took a pocket knife with me if that counts.
I would, however, be hilarious if you did have to defend yourself with a pocket knife. “And then, sergeant, I stabbed him in the leg with the bottle opener. That’s when things really turned ugly…”

If they keep this up everyone is going to hate Canadians.

And Dublin is a model example of a city in a third world country. I’ve never seen such a indigenous population in drunken disarray. The best looking, most well behaved people in Dublin clubs are the tourists or the eastern European help.
And…???

At least we’re not carrying knives and guns so we can turn around and murder each other if someone looks at us the wrong way. The worst thing that’ll happen to you in most clubs in Dublin is that you’ll get a couple of punches before security steps in to stop it.

You’re very unlikely to be fatally injured unless you cross one of the criminal gangs.

I grew up right near Redfern (probably only makes sense to Australians) and I’m extremely glad guns and knives are banned.
