Training With Ed Coan

Saturday, June 2, 2012 - Back & Biceps

FOREWORD: My house was out of food, so I built an epic Grand Slam at Denny’s for dat bloat lulz.

Warm Up

  1. PVC roll back
  2. Lots of stretching
  3. Rotator cuff

Pull Ups
1 X 10 X BW
3 X 5 X BW +10 lbs.

NOTES: First set felt good, so I left a couple reps in the tank for my weighted pull ups. Got a wild hair up my ass and decided to do some weighted ones. They were surprisingly easy. I thinking I’m going to go for 5 X 6 with the +10 lbs. next week and see how that goes.

Wide-grip Lat Pulldowns
1 X 12 X 42.5
1 X 12 X 50
1 X 12 X 55

NOTES: I face the opposite way on these. I can’t use as much weight as when I have my legs under the pads, but I get a way better contraction out of them when I can’t use any body English and just have to use my back. Plus using straps kept my biceps out of the equation, so I got a real nice contraction out of these.

Wide-grip Low Cable Rows
3 X 15 X 65

NOTES: Again, just focused on the contraction, not the weight. I really went for the stretch and leaned all the way forward with these and just pulled back, concentrating on squeezing my lower lats for some total back development. Even as a powerlifter, I need an overall big back so I can get a better base for squatting, benching, and deadlifting. Straps helped keep the focus on my lats doing the pulling.

EZ Bar Curls
3 X 12 X 45

Pronated-grip Dumbbell Curls
2 X 10 X 20s (each arm)
1 X 10 X 25s (each arm)

Single-arm Hammer Strength Preacher Curls
3 X 10 X 25 (each arm)

Standing Double Cable Curls
3 X 12 X 15

Flat Machine Preacher Curls
3 X 12 X 40

ENDING NOTES: I feel like such a closet bodybuilder lol. I seriously don’t think I would mind competing in a show one of these days. Anyways, today was one of the best workouts in a while. Picked up some Hemo-rage from Vitamin Shoppe today, and I have to say, awesome product. Got a huge pump from it and intense focus. Can’t wait to use it again. Got work tonight and then a party to head over to. Gonna go H.A.M. tonight. Leggo!

Yeah Just how you dont compete in and get Tested by a tested Fed. Since a good majority of per w/o have banned substances in them.

I have no clue what you just said.

CS

WTF did I just read?

Most preworkouts have banned stimulants/substances in them. It’s happened here in the CPU guy get tested an some stimulant is in it and it not even on the label. I happens every couple of years, something to be aware of.

yeah is hemo rage ok to take? I am interested but would suck if its banned

I’m not sure I know superpump 250 is and Jack3d is that contain Methylhexaneamine I beleave or something similar Pretty much I would do some reseach on it or just stop taking it 8 weeks out to let it clear your system.

I know that 1,3 DMAA is banned in a lot of places now, even in the military because it was linked to a couple of training deaths. I don’t know, but Hemo Rage made me crash hardcore and I was tired as hell after my workout and when I was working.

How’s the training going bud?

I have a few friends that swear by hemo-rage but I could never get into pre-workout supps. Always make me jittery and when I am jittery, I feel not very coordinated under the bar…A little coffee and I am set.

My vote is for Spike tabs. Three of those suckers and I get tunnel vision right before a big lift. Granted… I’ll also be really irritable and hell to be around lol.

Training is going pretty well. I’m looking to fix my deadlift form in the next month or something along those lines so I can finally pull 455. I’ve got a meet on July 28 where I’m looking to total 1150. The American open record is 1151.7, so we’ll see how it goes. If I can pull off some good numbers on the squat and bench, then all I’ll need is a 420+ deadlift. There are no records for the 16-17 age bracket @ 198, so whatever I lift would be an American record.

I never really got into pre-workouts either until a little while ago when I was swamped with stupid shit earlier in my training and they gave me a boost when I needed one. I’ve heard L-tyrosine + a couple hundred mgs of caffeine is really good, too.

CS

Man I think you can BEAT that record.

I sure hope I can. I’d love to put something impressive on my college apps.

CS

What weight class you gonna lift in?

Lul glad someone else has decided to use straps on some assistance stuff because they realized it would help development better

I’ll be in the 198. If I decided to drop down to 181 for some reason, then I could definitely beat the open raw total for that by about 250 lbs.

CS

Weird to think that I could be an American record holder in just 7 more weeks. Sweet.

Dude you can do it!

Big bench day today. I’ll be looking for either 270 or 275 for triples. Either weight would be a PR, so a PR is in store for today.
