If you do plan to go into a college/university ROTC program, then any preparation would put you leaps and bounds ahead of 99% of the cadets, sadly. NGCSU is one of the six senior military colleges and it is sad (to me) that the level of fitness displayed by the cadets isn’t higher. =/
I’m in now way bashing the armed forces with that statement. I have extreme gratitude and respect for the military.

Well… Like any physical activity, the more you go at it, the more likely you are to hurt yourself. Have you asked Ed Coan?
No, I haven’t, but it wouldn’t hurt. I will next time I see him.

I would recommend Judo. It is applicable to fighting in all of your gear.
This was the one that I was considering the most. I have to check the local martial art studios around my house to see if they offer/teach it.

Nah, man, I understand what you’re saying. I’m just trying to become the best soldier that I can at this point. That’s all I’m really trying to do. I won’t ever play football again, so might as well start training to be what I’ve always wanted to be. I guess the earlier, the better.

Most of our military are in complete shit shape. I recommend you do kick boxing if you want to help yourself in hand to hand combat. You never want it to go to the ground in a battle situation.
MACP (Modern Army combatives program) is based on jiu-jitsu. The main point is dominant body position. Standing has too many variables. Control the fight. You aren’t looking for a knockout, you are looking to wrestle someone until your battle buddy comes and sends him straight to hell.
Not being an argumentative prick, just saying that’s what MACP is based on.

Agreed. I stopped in at a local MMA place and they offered Muay Thai, which goes to the ground. I’m not looking to go to the ground. You want to keep it standing as much as possible before you kill the other guy.

I know what you’re saying. I found a place that teaches judo and is only about 15 minutes from my house, so I’m going to check it out this weekend!

Wednesday, May 16, 2012 - Squats & Deads
Warm up
- PVC roll everything
- Lots of stretching
Paused Squats
2 X 6 X 135
1 X 5 X 185
1 X 2 X 225
1 X 2 X 265
1 X 2 X 285
1 X 2 X 305* +10 lb. PR.
NOTES: Was good for another one. Last one was a grinder, but it was pretty solid. Next week I’ll be going for 315 for a double.
Conventional Deadlifts
1 X 8 X 135
1 X 5 X 225
1 X 3 X 315
1 X 1 X 355
3 X 0 X 390
1 X 1 X 365
1 X 10 X 135 (Sumo)
NOTES: Can’t get out of this rut. My set up still fucking sucks. I’m still not using enough legs. I can’t keep my hips down, either. I’m not pulling the slack out of the bar. There are a million things wrong with my deadlift. I don’t know why I keep having to go up in weight if I can’t get any of the reps. I’m just burning myself out and getting pissed off. I think the squats are taking a toll on my DL performance. Hopefully I can get my shit straightened out.
Chest-Supported Rows
4 X 8 X 3 plates
Wide-grip Lat Pulldowns
3 X 10 X 140
ENDING NOTES: Another terrible day of deadlifting. It’s been like this for 3 weeks, now. I have to see what Ed says. He wasn’t there yesterday, so he couldn’t really critique anything. We got a video, so we’ll see what he thinks is going wrong. I might consider switching to sumo.

if your looking at a martial arts i recommend you go and search far and high for a Wing Chun academy. If you need anymore convincing after you read up on it, go and watch the IP man series.
Have you tried switching the positions of deadlift and squat in your actual session? Like deadlift first then squat? Whenever I do this I find it suprising how much my first exercise affects my second, something to consider asking Ed about

That’s what I was thinking. I don’t know why we don’t have a separate day for both lifts. Maybe we don’t have enough work capacity yet? I’m not sure. I’ll ask if it’s the order of the exercise that’s taking a toll on my lifts.

FINALLY got a food scale today. Picked up a cheap one at Target so I can weigh my shit out. I’m becoming very meticulous about my diet. Starting this week, it’s gonna be some strict shit.

I feel you, brah. My portion estimations when I don’t use a scale suck so much. It will be very helpful.
Monday, May 21, 2012 - Bench Night
Warm Up
- PVC roll everything
- Lots of stretching
- Rotator cuff
Flat Bench Press
2 X 6 X 135
1 X 3 X 185
1 X 2 X 205
1 X 1 X 225
2 X 5 X 250* +5 lb. & +4 rep PR.
NOTES: Kinda slow, but I got the reps. Still ain’t back into “rep” mode yet. The last 2 reps of each set were the easiest for some odd reason. Whatever, still got a PR.
Paused Close-grip Bench Press
1 X 5 X 225
NOTES: Just awful. Form was terrible.
Paused Close-grip 2 Board Bench Press
1 X 3 X 245
1 X 3 X 255* +10 lb. PR.
NOTES: Not too shabby. Touched a little too high on the board the last rep, but all in all, pretty solid.
Incline Dumbbell/Flat Dumbbell Bench Press
Incline Dumbbell Bench Press - 3 X 8 X 65s
Flat Dumbbell Bench Press - 3 X 8 X 55s
V-Bar Tricep Pushdowns
1 X 8 X 40
1 X 8 X 50
1 X 8 X 60
1 X 8 X 70
1 X 8 X 80
1 X 8 X 90
NOTES: Had to work up to a max set of 8. One minute rest in between each set.
Reverse-grip Single-arm Pushdowns
3 X 10 X 25 (each arm)
Skullcrushers
1 X 25 X 50
NOTES: Burnout set.
ENDING NOTES: Not a bad workout. Eddie left early, so he just texted me the rest of the workout. Got in, got my shit done, and got out pretty quick. Hopefully I’ll be able to actually fucking deadlift the right way without looking like a retard on Wednesday.
Also off of work all week to study for finals, so the extra rest should help. Gotta run early tomorrow morning. I’m finally able to get back into my running schedule, so that’s nice. I haven’t been able to because of work, school, and just a bunch of other shit that’s gotten in the way. Life should simplify in the next couple weeks, here. Looking forward to relaxing for a week or two.

Tuesday, May 22, 2012 - Couch to 5k, Week 2, Day 1
Warm Up
- PVC roll everything
- Lots of stretching
- Brisk 5 minutes walking
Workout
90 seconds running X 6
2 minutes walking X 6
TOTAL DISTANCE: 2.55 miles
TOTAL TIME: 29:00
ENDING NOTES: Haven’t been able to run in almost 2 weeks because of my crazy-ass work and lifting schedule. Now that I’m off of work for the entire week and have finals, I have more time to get a run in and be consistent.
I have a PE final (30 minute run, but we usually just fuck around) and an advanced algebra final tomorrow that I’m pretty confident I should ace. Just aced a 2-part Spanish final yesterday and today, so I’m set.
Got squatz and deadz tomorrowz. Looking forward to it. Gonna talk to Ed about switching to sumo. Should be interesting.
