Training to Failure is Pointless

From what I understand, a lot of movies back when were made with a very thinly veiled secondary purpose.

That clip definitely appeared to be one.

Never actually saw the entire thing, so can’t really say about the rest.

All I can say is, the one thing that hasn’t aged well in “Pumping iron” is the music - which is odd considering the punk era was at the door.

Speaking of music:

Nope. No mention of HIT in there, and Les covers a lot of ground on the subject of things that are pointless.

Bodybuilding is about the least punk sport I can think of.

Primus is the common ground! Love that band! Lunatics!

Question about deficit deadlifts

I tried them (3 inch deficit) and struggled to pull a weight for one rep that I’d usually pull for 3-5

Is this normal? Am I supposed to lose THAT much strength from a mere 3 inch deficit?

I have elevator shoes that are designed to make me three inches taller, they’re great. I like to use them for SLDL’s/RDL’s, decided to use them for conventional deadlifts (which I usually do without shoes on).

Didn’t expect it to make them THAT much harder… I’m gonna be really sore tomorrow… either that or my strength has taken a humongous hit in the past week…

Deficits can be a lot harder depending on the person. 3 inch is a pretty good deficit too. I could probably do my 5 rm for a single, so it sounds about right.

My ego has been preserved

Not doing it again. The deficit was too steep, I struggled to keep my form composed right at the bottom portion of the lift.

I’ll do a 1-2 inch deficit. My rationale was… the hardest parts of deadlifting for me are

  • grip strength, I have small(ish) hands.
  • the initial pull off the floor

I thought perhaps a deficit would help me become more proficient at pulling off the floor

Ooffff

I’m sore today. Those deficit deadlifts have murdered my traps…

Always have sore traps after deadlifts, but not like this…

You will find most powerlifters do small deficits. That and stuff like narrow grip bench, it’s not super narrow, just like a few fingers in.

Closer to the original movement, the more carry over.

I promise you that 3 inches can make ALL the difference.

Amrite, ladies??

I mean the difference between 3 and six inches (or 2 and 5) I assume is fairly significant when it comes to schnoobadoodles.

I think dudes care a lot more than women in general.

The ladies all cheer when I take em for a ride on Space Mountain! Whooooo!

This is interesting. I’ve always wondered about how an angle affects the force required, thanks!

X-Force have this down to a fine art with tilting weight stacks on their machines that mean 40% more resistance on the negative.

Work your traps more. My traps are sore after shrug day, but never with anything else.

I don’t do shrugs. Don’t see the point.

How is it going to translate to making me a better athlete?

A strong shoulder girdle has ALWAYS been a big part of being a good athlete.
