Training Legs

well, as to appease the prof, i took one- granted, i have a shitty camera phone and bad lighting, but meh itll do.

Man I wish I could train squats, but they have been really fucking up my back lately. I did them about 6 hours ago and I can hardly move. Hopefully front squats will be OK.

Akuma, when doing lunges and RDL’s do you just really focus on contracting and feeling the muscle? You use less weight than I do on both of those but you’re obviously much bigger/stronger. [/quote]

for RDLs, yes i really focus on the ham stretch. I keep my legs straight and close together (touch your toes style) and remove my back completely out of the equation, not coming up high enough to pop the back, and going low enough to where the plates touch the ground, and returning to the starting position through hip motions and leg flexing.

As for the lunges, i just ensure i have a really wide gap in my lunge and also that my knee hits the ground. I mean, if you can do walking lunges w/ more than 135 for 10 reps, you are a champ. Personally i dont go too deep into Low rep range when lunging, a lunge isnt really about maxing. Coleman did them with 135, ipso facto, perfect the lunge form and do more of them, dont raise the weight.

How many reps should you not go beyond in a set for those lunges?

haha I like the direction this thread has taken. Fuck the haterz yo!

not nearly as developed as most of you, but i want to participate on the boards more. so here we go.

EDIT: not nearly as developed as ALL of you.

Personally, i wouldnt go lower than 8 reps per leg with lunges.

LOL! I don’t know, dude-- that’s a pretty special looking leg. You’re not exactly ‘under developed’, esp in your profile. Nice work.

dude what the fuck is that thing where your leg should be?

Lol the direction of this thread went from a “Leg rules. Toss in some Leg info so we can make a Leg knowledge Jambalaya” to a “Leg rules. Here are some awesome legs, They are better than yours, so get moving…bitch!”
Anyone else catching that “spark a fire under some asses through humbling via decent leg shots” type vibe? Lol, it work?

Go see a doctor immediately. There’s a tumour growing on your leg.

Mine used to suck, have come up dramatically in the past year. And yea, Synergy is a beast and a half.

Ya, I personally have gotten my best results with lunges at over 20 reps, which for me usually ends up being the gym length and back. One of my favorite exercises out there for total leg development.

Yes, it’s working. By the way Akuma, I got to say that I am finding your threads very helpful. I didn’t really start lifting until I was in my 30’s and pretty fat and have never had any training partners or anyone to show me the ropes. Having threads like these with some great input by other members here is very helpful.

I have a question for anyone out there that has some suggestions. Lunges used to be one of my favorites. After about a year that started to become very painful. My right big toe was killing me with every step. Long story short - athritis + bone spurs + fucked up joint = joint replacement surgery. I don’t know if I will ever be able to do lunges again. My toe currently has almost zero range of motion. Trying to do a lunge when your toe doesn’t bend is not so easy. I am trying to stretch it out and get some ROM back, but it is not working great so far.

The question, what would you do instead of lunges if you could no longer do them? I have been trying a bunch of other stuff for a while, but I am curious what others would do. Maybe I can get some ideas I haven’t thought of yet.

What about static lunges?

I have tried those, but to no avail. I should have been more specific in my description. It is when my right leg is in the back position that I can’t do them. Trying to bring my knee down is what is causing my toe to try and bend. It gets to the point where it will not go further and then just rolls my ankle over. It really sucks because if I try to force it, I just fall down. I lift at home so at least nobody sees me.

Thanks for the suggestion though, and by the way your last set of photos that you have been putting up look great. You have made some serious progress this last year.

Since this was brought up, I’m curious as to what some of you do about jeans (or even suits)? I have some 501XX’s that are very uncomfortable after adding an inch to my legs.

You can’t wear sweatpants everywhere

I buy baggy or loose fit and if necessary, a larger waist size. Jeans aren’t a problem for me. Dress pants … good luck.
