Training for Water Polo

Hey CT, I know you train many athletes and your one of the best at it so I was hoping you could help me out. Im 16 and my passion is powerlifting, but I have a friend who wants me to train him to get bigger stronger as well as better at his sport of water polo. I put him on starting strength to try to build up a solid foundation.

After he has built up this strength I want to be able to train him so that it will transfer over to his performance in his sport. Would you train a water polo player just as any athlete or is there anything specific I should have him doing?

Seeing as water polo and all of swimming require great posterior chain strength, endurance, and healthy shoulders (they can be a bitch from all the overuse if your technique sucks), it would be wise to make this the focus of training. Now I’m NOT a coach, but this is just my suggestion from previous experience. And band pull-aparts are shoulder savers. Do them
