Training for Strongman

I realize threads like this get started from to time, but I’m starting my own darnit! :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ve been bitten by the competition bug. I’ve never formally competed in anything in my life(ever!) Strongman just seems like a good fit…I spent four years in the Navy hauling paint buckets around, and kind of liked it in a weird way :stuck_out_tongue:

There is a comp. in June,¶ Am I crazy for thinking of competing in it? Would that be enough time to get some training under my belt? …They have PL meets at the gym I go to, so maybe I can ask if they’ve got some ‘underground,’ equipment I can use, lol…

Basically all I know of strongman stuff is from what I read. I have a pretty decent base of strength, and I’m ready to just put myself out there!

Any tips, advice, stories, training ideas are all welcome…We are still pretty new to the area so if anyone reading knows of anyone in the Southern MD area that trains strongman that I can get in contact with, that would be cool too…THANKS!

Well, I suppose I’d just make sure there is a women’s class…

I haven’t done any strongman, but I would love to! You better do this, and put it in your log!

Good thinking!
The competition is ‘Gold Level.’ I don’t really know what the means, lol…
I suppose my first step, would be to email the guy and find out details, like you suggested…
I’m just nervous of actually signing up, because that means I am committed to doing and training for something I don’t have much experience with…that could be fun(or insane)!

mom-in-md that is awesome that you want to compete for the first time. I am also at looking at doing my first competition this year. I would recommend going to www.marunde-muscle.com and read through the forums and ask any questions there as I recently signed up and it is packed with guys(and girls) that really know strongman. Their are a lot of pros on there(kevin nee, derek poundstone, etc) and everyone is willing to help out.

marunde-muscle is a good forum, very helpful. Find out what the events and weights are so you can focus your training on that. Is there a womens class and what weights will they use? I made sure I would be able to complete most of the events before committing. Maybe the host knows of some training groups that might let you join them.

“Personal Best” is a good book to get, too

There is a training crew in Southern MD, I believe they’re about a half hour outside of DC? Was just talking with one of their guys this weekend, I know they are somewhere around the end of the green line from DC’s metro, but I dont know how far away … could be 10 minutes, could be a half hour. It’s Graham’s Garage Gang, they train with the MD state chair,

Graham Bartholomew
2698 Moran Drive
Waldorf, Maryland 20601
Phone: 301-893-8290
E-mail: garage_gang@hotmail.com

that info is from nastrongmaninc.com, another great resource. email graham today. if you can’t make it out there to train this weekend do it before the end of february. A training day will give you a good idea of whether this is really for you. I’m not sure how many competitive guys we have on here, but I’ve done somewhere around a dozen contests. I’ll check back on this thread, but if i forget or whatever, just PM me if you have any other questions

SWEET!! Thanks for all the help so far…

KBC- Waldorf is about 30-40min away from me… I will definitely email them today…that sounds AWESOME…

Jilly- thanks for the book recommendation! I will email the host of the comp today and find out more details…

KBC- how did you find the info you gave me? I really suck at searches like that…

Mikey- have fun training!! feel free to pass any training tips my way!

I just got an email from the host of the comp that is in June…he advised me to start a thread on Anvil, and if he can get three or more ladies to commit, then there will be a woman’s class!!

eek, I’m nervous now! :stuck_out_tongue:

Off the top of my head, I know Jalaine Ulsh (wife of Steve Pulcinella, Iron Sport Gym owner, former WSM competitor and current highland games masters competitor) is in Philly. Dont knwo where in PA this contest is, and heck, I dont even know if Jalaine is doing strongman comps currently, tho she has in the past, but that might be a good spot to start.

hmm…I was hoping to recruit some girls that have never competed before(like myself)
unless it’s every man(or woman) for themselves?

I emailed the guy back to ask if I could also start a thread here about it, to find some competition!
