Training for Bigger Calves

I read the book about 2 months ago, and have had several conversations with Ken. He is a very intelligent man, even if he is VERY set on his ways. Its a must read, one of the most informative books on training i have ever read. It should be read even if you don’t incorporate Super Slow into your training.

Ken Hutchins is the ONLY person who ever explained the logic of a fall-off cam. The fall-off cam allows for another completed rep, thus enabling another eccentric rep. This fall off cam allows for much deeper inroad demonstrated as extra eccentric time under load. As Ken Hutchins states, “Why negative-only?”

Thanks for commenting. Bigger Muscles in 42 Days is another book that I’ve never seen.

Am I correct in my impression that the purpose of contra-lateral training was two-fold:

  • Improved recovery: by training unilaterally on alternating days, you could use more intensity on the trained limb with less impact on recovery.

  • Improved ability to apply force in sports which require asymmetrical or cross body generation of force.

Yes, you are correct.

My last uni-lateral calf workout was revealing.

I used my Nautilus OME machine for the calf raise

I started with a s-l-o-w eccentric rep on my left leg with a straight leg, then immediately followed by many much faster pulse reps with both bent knee legs. Then immediately back to another s-l-o-w eccentric rep. My left leg shook so bad on the final eccentric rep as to be uncontrollable. I will seriously entertain doing both legs from here on. The single leg vibrated so much as to possibly be unsafe.
