OK, I know, I know, I shouldn’t, but it’s been my bad habit for a long time, and let’s admit it, I’m hooked. There, I said it.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any insight into the aforementioned subject. I have read plenty of articles about smoking and training and not only is it bad for your lungs, but apparently, it also causes you to keep excess weight around your midsection.
Now, here is where my question comes in. I don’t smoke however, I do use smokeless tobacco. Is the nicotine what causes the excess weight or is it the method of delivery, i.e.-cigarettes? I ask this because I’ve been training on and off for 20 years, and seriously over the last four. Over the last four years of my serious training, I have been unable to get the excess weight from around my midsection. I am an absolute fanatic about my diet and excersize, but I can’t seem to make it disappear. I know it’s about BF%, but I always get to where I can see the top two sets of abs, and then nothing. Can’t get the full six pack. Just for reference, I am 5’11", 190 lbs, and I work out 5-6 times per week (weights 3-4 times per week, and cardio on off days, when cutting). Can anyone provide any insight into this situation. Thanks.

Why don’t you get unhooked? It’d solve the nicotine complication problem pretty quickly.

Yeah, I know I should, but it’s a great appetite suppressant…yeah, I’ve been using that one for years. Actually, I’m just curious if it really does keep weight around your midsection. If not, I’m gonna keep on, cause like I said, I’m hooked. Good point though. Thanks Dan.

As I recall (it’s been a while since I researched this topic extensively, so new info may have been discovered), nicotine does (or “may” as the scientific community likes to say)significantly impair insulin sensitivity. Impaired insulin sensitivity is associated with more fat storage around the midsection compared with other areas of your body (cortisol will too, but that’s another topic).
So yes, I believe it does, though someone a little more focused in this area may be able to give you a stronger answer.

Thanks again, Dan. May just be the motivation that I need to quit. Maybe Cy can jump in here and give a little more info. Cy?
