Yeah even though they are posed differently, you can see some more thickness in the upper body of the first two, particularly Petrella. Although the different poses make it very hard to evaluate how much was gained and the lack of flexing in the lower body makes it hard to notice any positive changes if there were any. Also the bottom guy seems like he made literally no change. Probably too high of a Bodyfat percentage to begin with to be optimally primed for building any muscle in a short time frame. I really hope they have some better evaluation photos somewhere lol
I see wider lats and thicker chest in the bottom 2 pics
Yes, itās thicker too
It seems the top guys before a heās poking his chest out/standing at attention and his after a heās somewhat hunched forward.
Middle guy seems to be standing somewhat at attention for the before and seems pretty dang bent over and flexing for the after.
The last guy definitely seems like he did eat a lot as you mentioned.
Strong table muscle lol
Pics can be deceiving I will say that, I am sure itās hard to replicate the before pic with an after pic a month laterā¦therefore I try to give the benefit of the doubt
Itās very easy. Iāve done it myself with a 6 year old holding the camera lol
This was already pointed out though, maybe in 1992 it would have been hard, but in 2021 itās not. They are already in the same room with same clothing (basically). Posture is an easy one.
looks at before picture hey billy, quit hunching, just stand normal - boom. Successful after photo.
They all seem to have similar differences in posing too. Kinda like they were coached for the before and after pictures. I think the 3rd guy may have not been following the Colorado experiment, his looks more like the Jones routine (and I mean Alex not Arthur).

Also, if youāre adding 10-14lbs of muscle in this short of time, why isnāt everybody doing it? Hell, from what Iāve seen most of the members who came from dardens original forum arenāt even running the programs he offers to a T. Most are butchering them and adding subtracting or just dabbling here and there with it.
Agreed ![]()
I followed Arnold and Francoās program back in the 80sā¦gained nothing, followed Lee Haneys program in the 90s, gained nothingā¦followed Yates program in the 2000s and got very strong and fatā¦followed Mentzers heavy duty and got deconditioned and fatā¦took a few year layoff because I was frustrated that never gained on any programā¦started, Dardens Hit and started losing the fat, gone from 225 to 205 in 3 years, imo thatās progress for me
As for the Colorado experimentā¦its too hard and can only be performed for about a month because of the systemic draining of the body, then you need a week off before trying a different program
No program is perfect
This guy is not in the above photos, did he perform the experiment???
No thatās online news āInfowarsā host Alex Jones, thatās a before and after photo he took for his supplement, Super Male Vitality. Itās gained some online notoriety and is something of a meme at this point. Heās just making a joke
That was just a joke. Alex Jones sells supplements and runs a propaganda based news show (IIRC, it was on YouTube recently, but got removed). He is the gay frogs guy if you have heard of that.
A few years back he posted this transformation to sell some product. He quickly got roasted as there is not much change other than his skin color.
ā¦i thought I heard that name before
First of all Iām a Nautilus and Jones nut but even so when the first and original Colorado experiment came out I said it was a fraud. Viator had lost tons of weight due to an accident and Jones capitalized on a guy who was already big before the accident and tried to make it appear his gains were all from the experiment. As for this new Colorado experiment I have some of the same concerns voiced in the thread. What really is the problem here , if there is one , is some of the responses like this.
ā what even is a Nautilus machine?
Itās the Scientology of resistance training!
Or
What even is a Nautilus machine? Sounds like something from the Matrix Trilogy?
Thatās fine by me As I donāt care what people think of Nautilus but letās not act like nothing disparaging was said.
So you draw the line at comparisons using wild/exotic/dramatic religions, but not wild/dramatic/exotic movies lol
I think theyāre just having some lighthearted fun. The comments have given me a pretty good laugh. If the pictures had been taken better, the teasing probably wouldnāt be so bad, and even so, itās pretty light and seems to be all in good fun
Hello All,
I was recently tagged in this post and apparently havenāt been on the forum in 8 years. Is Professor X still around? lol. Only the old school guys will get that.
I will do my best to try and explain some of the details with what we did. Itās been very surprising all the places this case study has showed up on the internet.
First the photos. We just tried to take photos standing with the same background in as close to the same spot as we could. They were taken on our phones and if someone tilted differently, or stood differently it was completely accidental. We certainly arenāt professionals in this regard.
I was recently asked to do a podcast in which I explained before this we had performed 2 other case studies. At are gym āSTG Strength and Powerā we are constantly trying to learn new things along with understand more and more about the rich history of the Iron Game. The first case study was 10 week were volume was increased over 5 weeks, then dropped down and increased again over the second 5 weeks. So basically every exercise done for 2 sets week 1, 3 sets, 4 sets week 3 etc. Essentially increasing demands via volume in an attempts to strategically overreach.
Unfortunately we had little to show for our efforts.
The second involved a routine from a gentlemen who is a friend and use to manage the World gymās in California during their hay day in the 80ās. I had worked with him many years ago to attain good results and wanted to catch up with his latest research. The program included a lot of high rep work, occlusion training and the use of compression garments. The training was very uncomfortable but the pumps were incredible. However yet again after those 8 weeks I believe it was we were surprised we had little to show for it.
The Colorado experiment came to be because we believe we are the only gym in the world that can re-create it workout for workout and we were shutdown under are second lockdown order. We were told we couldnāt work for a month and the Colorado experiment for those who donāt know took a month. The biggest logistical challenge is getting spotters. Again for those who donāt know the routines involve a heavy emphasis on negative only sets. Even an averagely strong person would need two people in most cases to lift the resistance to you so the lifter can then lower. You would be surprised how quickly you can lose friends/training partners with this protocol. There are special Nautilus machines we have where you use the strength of your legs to move the weight to you so you can lower with your upper body. At the gym we have Flex, Pendulum, Hammer, Iron Core, Nebula, Westside, MEDX all the free weights you could ask for from Ivanko but the Old Nautilus will always be my first love. Especially if you are a taller lifter.
The results were surprising to us as well. I will try to answer some of the questions and address some of the comments. The lowest weight gain was 8 lbs and the highest was 14 lbs. Myself and the youngest trainee both but a quarter inch on our waists for that amount of weight gain. I am not sure who claimed it was all muscle. All we ever said was we were happy with what we accomplished over the month. As for the legs all 3 of us did increase circumference in the upper leg. However results there did lack behind the upper body. Several of the last half routines would only involve 1 or 2 sets of lower body work. Normally a set of Nautilus Duo-Squat at the very end. As hard as the routine was to get through we all noted more lower body work would have been ideal. Also no direct calf work is performed during the experiment. Not sure why but we did the program verbatim as it was done in 73. If I could take the photos over again I would take a lower camera angle to show the legs a bit better.
As for selling something. We have not sold any product or routine or e-book in regards to this. If you were to come to our gym you would train very hard, safe and on what we believe is some of the best equipment anywhere. The majority of our client base has orthopedic concerns and we have moved more to a medical model over the past few years. We were asked to send all information to a University in the UK which we did that will include all measurements, all training logs including every set, weight and time it took to do the routines. I also personally tracked everything I ate on MyfitnessPal so that can all be seen to. They hope to put it in an open source journal so everyone can read it free of charge.
For those who are skeptical by all means stay that way. Itās the best way to be in fitness world. Heck when I started in the early 2000ās everyone and do mean everyone was on a wobble board. lol. For those who are interested take a look at incorporating more negative only and negative accentuated sets into your routine. Before doing this case study I would have thought they were overrated. They can be done intensely, safely and they worked well for us. The 3 of us were mid 20, mid 30ās and mid 40ās which we felt was a nice bonus instead of just using a bunch of motivated 20 year oldās and can do and recover from almost anything.
Try it out. Itās hard as hell. It worked for us and I still donāt want to go through it again. We do have a very motivated young women who is going to attempt it and we look forward to seeing what happens to her.
All the best to all of you. Good Training.
Michael
