Towel Equivalent of 3-Board Press?

Can someone tell me how many inches off of ones chest a 3-board press comes? I do not currently have access to boards or a spotter to hold it so I plan on doing towel presses. I believe I read that each board is 1.5 inches, but have also read 2+ inches so I’d appreciate some clarification.

Also, just for general board pressing do you just let it touch the board and go right back up or kind of sit it there lightly for a second before exploding back up?

If you cant get 3 12" pieces of 2x6 amd glue them together, your not trying hard enough. I never have people to hold boards, you just put them under your t-shirt.

A towel cant replace a board press

Each board is 1 1/2" so a three board is 4 1/2" thick.

and about the way to use boards, i found this article very helpful, and have already used it in training!

I might be able to do that in the future but I’m at school right now and have no access to hardware stores or anything unless I specifically made a trip taking a bus or something. Probably over spring break I can though.

Why would a towel press at the same height be much different than the boards? I’m not doubting you, just wondering about the reasoning if the depth is the same in both cases

OK that’s what I thought and the towel I have folded to almost exactly that

Thanks a lot, I’ll get to that a little later today probably

no towel is fine, idk if your training in your shirt, but with a towel, it will allow you to touch, and then go deeper, and while breaking in a shirt that invaluable, its similar to the “manpon” dave tate talks about in that article. so it is a decent sub for the board press, just not the best

Each board is 1.5 inches so 4.5 inches total.

check out the pics in my profile. I do board presses all the time by my self. basically you need to put an eye bolt in the bottom board then clip on a caribiner thru the eye bolt and latch to a belt. So long as you don’t bounce the boards off you chest they will stay there.

do both each, has their place. I’d say a Raw bencher would do better with a light touch and go and a shirted bencher MAY be better with the longer paused ‘let it sink in’ kind of press

Another thing I do on ocasion is stick a YOGA foam block under my tee shirt. I got a 2 pack at Walmart for $10. they are 3" thick. More or less a “manpon” press. You could use a genuine foam roller cut in half but they are $25. I’ve tried the towel thing and didn’t like the feel. Good luck man…

You can use a mini band to hold boards.
You could try using (old?) phone directories, you could 'taylor them by removing some pages until they are the thickness you need, then tape 'em up.

A towel is not the same as a board.

When using a towel, you basically are using soft tissue to stop the bar, but when using a board, the hard surface is stopping the board and not the tissue.

Also, the board allows you to really sink the bar whereas the towel won’t allow you to do this unless you have a bunch of towels taped together, but then that more of like a manpon type bench than a towel. I like to use a manpon type when my shoulders are felling beat up, and that allows me to still train heavy while giving my shoulders a break.

The two are totally different, both good, but different uses for sure.

Thanks, I tried the towel press folded to about 5in. which I’m sure is no more than 4.5 when it’s under my shirt and I liked it. Never tried a board press so I can’t really compare but it seemed fine. I guess with a towel I would need to do the touch and go anyway because if I let it set there it would sink in 2-3 inches.

I’ll have to go to a 2 board press in 2 weeks so at that point I’ll either try to get 2 boards or just fold the towel to be about 3-3.5 inches.

If that’s you in your forum pic, I doubt I have any advice for you. Nice work. (Maybe I should switch to a towel. lol.)
