Total Hip Replacement or Hip Resurfacing?

I am having my right hip resurfaced two weeks from today. JJ-dude or Blake-b, would love to hear some updates from either of you.

I had my other side done in July of 2012. I’ve never felt better. I can squat, deadlift, run, etc with no restrictions. In fact, after all the healing was done, I had more flexibility because my hips worked the way they were supposed to.

I had to learn a different squatting groove as I couldn’t squat as wide as I was used to. It makes no difference to me though as I don’t have pain when doing it or anything the next day except DOMS. It’s also nice to have glutes firing like they are supposed to. Mine were shutdown from the years of dysfunction. I didn’t have to do anything special either. They just started working.

I had physical therapy for the first side and did nothing for the second side except walk with good form. Both turned out fine. I think the best thing you can do to help you in the long run is have strong muscles around the joints.

My surgeries were through the rear. There is a technique where they go through the front and the downtime is much much less than the rear approach.

If there is anything specific you’d like to know, ask here.

Good luck! I have ZERO regrets with my surgeries.

Well Hi Ecchastang! Update? I got my resurfacing done in 2001. No problems of any sort, no real restrictions. The only one he gave me was no bungee jumping, since they remove the ligament that goes through the middle of the head of the joint, so it is possible to pull the leg off. Possible. No issues with squatting or deadlifts and I dearly love them both. Got the left knee resurfaced Dec. 2015 and most of my recent ails have been due to that. Same guy who did my hip. He says I am cleared to go back to lifting heavy 6 months post-op, though no Oly lifts for the knee. The hip would be fine with it and he did clear me and I did indeed do sprint training on the hip for quite some time before the knee stopped that. No regrets either with the hip. Probably none with the knee (hey, I’m 5 weeks out and it is still sore and stiff).

Let me know how things went.

I just had my 2 year follow up a couple of weeks ago. Doc said everything looked great, no signs of movement, bone has attached itself well to the implants (he used a phrase I cannot remember).

I have noticed my right hip has a little less mobility than the left. When I say that, what I mean is I cannot bend as far over my right as my left. I ONLY notice then when trying to tie my right shoe. That’s how small it is and it is too late to do anything about it.

Also when I squat, if I place my feet at a certain angle with a certain hip width at depth, I can feel what feels like the right side partially moving. I DO NOT do this on purpose but discovered it because after surgery, my squat stance changed. I purposely avoid it but sometimes I forget and it happens. It doesn’t hurt but I can just feel it. Doc said be careful to avoid it as it can cause wear on the edge of the hip implant and/or ball.

He said come back and see him in four years unless something arises.

A couple of guys from work have had theirs done by the same Doc. Their surgeries were through the front of the hip. When they were telling me how quickly they recovered I thought they were supermen until I realized they had front surgery. At the aforementioned follow up, I told the Doc I wanted mine redone - from the front. He just laughed. It wasn’t an option when mine were done and he told me it took about a year before he mastered it.

Blake who was your doctor. I’m looking at hip resurfacing right now for my right hip which is destroyed

Dr. Jeffrey Krempec in the Kansas City, MO area. I have since found out
he has done several of my co-workers as well.

Ok thanks. I have an appointment with Dr Su in NY in a few weeks. I’m also considering Pritchett in Washington because I am very impressed by the device he uses though not sure how feasible it is to travel that far and have surgery. Im still researching.
