I see a lot of things I’ve started calling power curtsies that vaguely remind me of a squat. It’s where the person has a loaded barbell on their back and bends their knees causing their hips to dip 4-6 inches, then they spring back up and grunt and scream.
But I can’t figure out why a person would do a curtsy if they’re not wearing a skirt or dress… Next time I see a guy do these, I’ll have to let him know he left his skirt at home
I think the main reason why guys don’t squat is because they are well aware that they don’t know how to squat. Squatting hurts them and they aren’t sure why, but they aren’t prepared to do something that feels so wrong. So they don’t. Which is sensible enough when you don’t know how to make the hurt stop. Ignoring it and squatting anyway isn’t hard core. It is stupid.
A lot of people who think they squat okay don’t. They cut depth high or they don’t maintain their lumbar arch. You can get away with loss of lumbar arch or knee cave when you are young and bullet proof - but it catches up eventually.
Before you are so quick to write off other people as being wussy for not squatting you should post a vid of your squatting form. Maybe people don’t squat because they don’t want to squat like you lolz.
One tends to make better progress when one focuses on what one cannot do rather than on congratulating oneself compared to others.

But whatever.
Alexus-most big squatters that squat to depth actually lose the lumbar arch
example
When someone has 405lbs on their back and only go down a few inches and is screaming the whole time, that’s nothing but ego right there and I feel perfectly fine making fun of that.

but you (nearly) never see their knees cave in.
I mean, yeah, you almost always see guys squat 880 for reps.

There is simply no other exercise, and certainly no machine, that produces the level of central nervous system activity, improved balance and coordination, skeletal loading and bone density enhancement, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue stress and strength, psychological demand and toughness, and overall systemic conditioning than the correctly performed full squat.- Mark Rippetoe
Just that the deadlift actually drains your CNS even more, and uses more muscles. Not saying it’s better for muscle growth, though.
And reason #11: because even with an arch, they can make your spine hurt.
It’s easy not to care if other lifters decide not to squat. What is not so easy is maintaining apathy when you’re faced with 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 “squatters”. It’s an offense to the eyeballs. And I even try not to look, but then you accidentally catch a glimpse and are immediately enraged.
Honestly I could care less if anybody else ever squats again because all that means for me is no wait for the squat rack and no cocky tools asking me how much longer I have and trying to rush me so they can get in there quick sets of half squats.
There have been various times since I started lifting where I neglected the importance of training legs and would simply skip them to do other groups. Eventually I was taught the importance of leg work and proper form for squatting from a few of the senior members of my gym and have since come to love leg days.
I just find it enjoyable when I see the guy walking around the gym thinking he’s the man when his calves are smaller than the girl working out next to him’s forearms. I get in a good private chuckle and focus back on myself.

I’ve learned to squat, even with a suspect back, but I dang sure don’t squat for my calves.

Haha I think it’s pretty accepted for powerlifters to have tiny calves.
