Too Much Spinach & Kidney Stones?

Has anyone ever heard of or experienced getting kidney stones from eating too much spinach?

Yes, I’ve heard of it. I’ve also heard that COOKED spinach has less oxalates and that if you eat a high calcium product with it, it will protect you even more. Or it could be the otherway around (with the milk).

I’ve also heard that the cooked thing is a myth. And I’ve heard that you’d have to eat 10 pounds of spinach a day to get that much oxalates.

By the way, spinach is not the only food high in oxalates. I eat it every day and get more benefits (1600% K) from it than detriment. Ask me in 10 years.

I can promise you that your body will fall apart if you do not eat a mixture of 5-10 fruits and veggies a day. You have to start somewhere.

my friend got stones - raw spinach was a large component of his diet. some people can develop calcium stones from dairy and/or protein.

if you get stones, have the doc analyze what the stones are made of - will give you an idea of what you should be limiting/avoiding.

Dang! Why do the things that are supposed to be good for you have to be harmful? Can we not indulge in anything these days?

Green tea and sweet potatoes have high oxalates, also.

Now I’m just mad. I love my spinach raw!

as someone who has had multiple kidney stones (im 18… :frowning: ) the best advice I can give you is to drink ALOT of water. I got one from too much protein and the others from calcium. The second time I had them it was one of the most miserable experience of my life because I had three of them. (We went to the hospital when I first had pain and they thought that my appendix busrt because of how much pain I was in)

Everything is bad for you in EXCESS.

Moderation and variety…much healthier.
