Hey t-nation, I am an 18 year old 156lb 5’11 highschool kid bulking up and following the Massive Eating plan for mon/wed/fri rippetoe’s workout (squat,press,deadlift/row).
So far today I have eaten maybe 2000 calories, and with a goal of about 3,500, that is a lot of protein and fat to make up for.
Dinner tonight is chili (ground turkey, low fat cheese, beans, tomatoes etc…)
I can eat pretty ridiculous amounts, probably 3-5 large bowls of chili. I may end up eating something like 100g protein and 50g fat and probably a ton of carbs from the beans too, though Im not worried about that.
What I want to know is, is there a maximum amount of protein that can usefully be taken in at once and digested? So, If I eat 1000 calories worth of chili to make it to my daily goal, would half of it turn to fat anyway if there is a max amount of protein that the body can digest at once?
I don’t know the answer to the question but this post is refreshing.
I really couldn’t give a shit if its too much personally. A pizza has like 2500+ calories and I’ll down that no problems. Better to give your body too much then not enough imo.

Haha yeah. I think you are right. I dropped almost 30 pounds of fat from never working out before trying to bulk. I found myself scared of gaining back fat and ended up wasting 3 months of hard work in the gym but eating like a pussy. Once I started eating again I have gained about 10lbs in 2 or 3 months and I haven’t noticed too much of a change in fat so I might as well just keep eating.
Don’t think of it as how much protein can be utilized at one time just because you eat it in one sitting. It’s a pretty big meal… it will take a long time for your body to digest.

Sounds good, I suppose I never really spent the time to think about it like that. I’ll just keep eating till I’m full and skip any pre-bed meal.

Well that depends on when you eat the meal and when you go to bed. If there is more then a 2hr difference its always good to eat something, doesn’t have to be a huge meal.
Good attitude though, it will get you results which I guess it already has. So many fucking people eat like pro bodybuilders these days.
TY for the responses guys, I ate 4 bowls so thats plenty of protein and carbs, probably 20g of fiber (Gotta stay regular!).
By eating like a bodybuilder do you mean 100% clean? I generally keep about half of my meals clean, oats are delicious anyway :). but it would be near impossible for me to gain weight that way, not to mention a pain, so I eat whatever looks good and halfway fits my diet plan (read: Anything with protein).
I’m only a highschool kid on a bulk once, might as well live it up while I can.
I think it is also important to point out that your body doesnt work on a 24hr bases. What I mean is that your body doesnt stop at midnight and then calculate everything you ate in the last 24 hours then deciede what to do.
For example eating all your calories in one meal or in several meals will have very different results. therfore the same works with protein. It would be better to eat it evenly throughout the day instead of in one go.
Plus there is a limit to how much protein you can digest in one sitting.
2lb protein per lb of body mass… split that into all your meals.
Now what do you think ?[/quote]
This sounds like the best method for sure and is generally what I try to shoot for.
I eat small snacks in between classes to make sure I’m not going for more than 3 and a half or four hours between meals but I can’t always get in 50g of protein between classes or right before sports practices which leads to the question about having a ton of food for dinner to make up for gaps.
I will make an effort to spread things more evenly though.
