Tonino's Rippetoe Log

Congrats on the bench! I knew you’d get it this time.

Also, don’t worry about the squat. You’ll probably nail significantly more on your next squat day. As long as you’re progressing, have no worries!

And have fun soon with your new kid! Is this your first? I have two - ages 5 and 3 months. It’s a trip, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. My son is now becoming obsessed with healthy food and I’m starting to teach him some basic bodyweight workouts.[/quote]

Yes, this will be our first (and we already know it’s a girl). We are both very excited!!

So you have young ones too, that’s great. Is it difficult for you to stay on top of yourself in terms of nutrition and exercise while taking care of a 5yo and a 3mo?

Everyone I am surrounded by continues to tell me that I can not continue my current routine once the little one arrives. They tell me that I won’t have time for food preparation and for exercise. I laugh it off, because I don’t see why one can’t manage everything. Maybe I underestimate what it takes to raise a little one?

I think the initial shock of having a child will make it difficult to keep up with your lifestyle. But, you’ll find your tempo, and life WILL get back to normal, lol.

Personally, I’ve made these lifestyle changes recently, and my family has had very little problem helping me out. My son (5) has gotten very inspired by “Daddy’s muscles” and is now becoming obsessed with eating healthy and getting into shape. It’s quite the positive experience.

Of course, with the 3mo, my sleep schedule has been less than desirable, but, I’m an old pro now. Nothing I can’t handle, lol.

The biggest thing that I can tell you, is that it’s no longer about YOU or your wife. It’s all about the little one now. Good luck!!

Week 6, Day 18

Back Squat ------- 185 lbs: 4/2/1
Military Press — 100 lbs: 4/3/0
Bent Row --------- 120 lbs: 5/5/5

After only getting 3 reps on the squat last session, I was psyched that I was able to get 7 today. 185 still seems very difficult, but at least I’m progressing.

The press at 100 lbs also seemed impossible, but I knocked out 7 reps there too. I waited a good amount of time before my last set, but I couldn’t even lift the bar for 1 rep. My arms felt like jello!

Nothing quite like daddy’s little girl. I kid you not. With two boys and one girl, she is the princess.

You should reread the article from Chris Shugart about negative people.

When this has happened to me, I try to do as many push-presses as possible. I don’t count the reps, and keep the leg drive to a minimum or whatever helps get it going.

Dude, thank you for the article, I enjoyed it! And I believe your comment about the princess. My daughter is not even born yet, and I think she already owns more clothes than I do (thanks to my wife!)

I’ll try the push press next time I struggle like that on the Overhead Military Press. Thx for the pointer!!

My daughter is 3mos and already has me wrapped around her little fingers. There’s just something about Daddy’s Little Girl. I can’t wait to show her how to get strong and healthy. All the boys’ll be afraid of me, but they’ll really have to be watching out for her!!

Good job on the milpress. My shoulders ache just thinking about doing it with 100#.

@Dude: I love that article, thanks for posting it.

These are my other favorites when I need a quick pick-me-up or motivation despite what others believe.

Wow. I just finished reading the 2nd article (Shug’s article about Bob). Very powerful, after reading that, I NEVER want to miss a workout!!!

Wow, that article about Bob was inspirational! Thanks for posting the link, Dude. I used to be like Bob, and especially after reading that article, I never want to be that person again.

Speaking of which, it’s time for my Thursday cardio session. See you guys in a bit!

I love reading a lot of Shugart’s and TC’s articles. Sometimes you cannot help but just get fired up.

Where ya been? Hopefully you had a good Friday session!

sorry for the late update, my last session was somewhat dissappointing, here were the numbers:

Week 7, Day 19

Back Squat ------- 185 lbs: Need to reset, got one rep and then collapsed
Bench Press ------ 120 lbs: 4/4/3: My only good lift of the day
Deadlift --------- 210 lbs: 2: My grip gave out on me

I’ve had quite a bit of yardwork to do this weekend, so that might have affected my numbers somewhat.

I really think it’s time for a change of pace. I’ve been toying with Rippetoe’s Starting Strength for 4 months and I’ve seen great results. But I want to change gears, so I was thinking of doing Chris Shugart’s Basic Training for Beginners. It’s a 4 day a week split, I’ll still be focusing on compounds, with some isolation movements as well. My wife is due in about 4 weeks, so I was hoping to get a good 4 weeks in, and then once our daughter is born, take off a couple weeks.

Regardless, I thank everyone for checking into my log. I’ll probably start a new one for my new program. I’ll also continue checking in periodically to see how you guys are doing. Thanks again!

Good decision. When approaching a plateau, it is a good idea to do something different to stimulate new growth. The other thing to realize is that if you’ve had slow/no progression for some time, then diet and recovery are most likely the issue.

As far as taking time off, several weeks will not be a problem, especially considering your circumstances. I would try to do bodyweight exercises to stay in the groove. If you don’t, oh well. Please keep us updated on birth and other training news though.

Oh, I DEFINITELY plan on doing at least bodyweight exercises. Just for the first 2 weeks, then I plan on getting back to a solid program.

I’ve been really happy with Rippetoe. I took measurements before and after (chest, bicep, thigh) and I grew in every year. Plus, my bodyweight increased with minimal fat gain, and I’m lifting heavier weights, so all in all, I loved the program!!

… but as you said, I feel it’s time to stimulate new growth with a new program. I’ll post my progress (probably in a new log). And finally, I’m going to double check my diet, that may be lacking. I do good on weekdays, then on weekends, I actually think I eat LESS because I’m always doing work outside!!

Hey Tonino - did your wife have the baby yet? (I’m thinking that’s why we haven’t seen you around lately).

Also, have you started the new program yet?

Darwin, thanks for checking up on me!!

My wife has not had the baby yet, but everyone thinks it will happen soon. Her stomach has dropped significantly, her contractions have started to become more frequent, and she’s full term (36 weeks). We’re hoping she delivers before her actual due date, which is July 1.

As far as training goes, I am proud to say that I have NOT slacked off!! I have been following Shugart’s Beginner Blast Off program for the last 2 weeks. My only problem has been my participation on this website, I haven’t had much time to log on, let alone turn on the computer, since my wife and I have been running around trying to prepare as much as possible for the birth of our first child.

I’m also happy to say that I purchased John Berardi’s Precision Nutrition system, which comes with a Gourmet Nutrition cookbook. My diet is decent, but not perfect. And sometimes I feel that affects my performance in the gym.

I hope all is going well with you guys here. I will make an effort to check up more often, and I will definitely let you know when my daughter is born. I am keeping a log of my training program on paper, so eventually I will post it on this site.

Good to hear! Here’s a pre-emptive congratulations to the both of you! There’s nothing in this world that compares to the birth of your child.

My biggest amount of advice is get a camera, and one with video and sound capabilities. Don’t be afraid to act like paparazzi, it’s well worth it down the road.

Thank you guys. The camera is ready, and yes, it has video and sound!!
