To All Believers Part II

Last week I left the believers with the realization that they are in danger of departing from the faith if they are unwilling to cleanse themselves from all that displeases God and separate themselves completely from the world. This week, I would to talk about this separation from the world for the believers.

The concept of separation from all evil is fundamental to God’s relationship with His people. According to the bible, separation involves:
a)Separating yourself morally and spiritually from sin and from everything that is contrary to Jesus Christ, righteousness, and the word of God.
b)Drawing near to God in a close and intimate fellowship through dedication, worship, and service unto Him. Separation in this twofold sense results in a relationship where God is our heavenly Father who abides with us and is our God, and we in turn are His sons and daughters.
( II Corinthians 6:16-18 ) “…What agreement hath the temple of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”

In the Old Testament, separation was a continual requirement of God for His people. They were expected to be different, holy, and separated from all other peoples in order to belong to God as His very own.
( Deuteronomy 14:2 ) " For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God, and the Lord hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth. "

In the New Testament, God commanded separation of the believer from:
a)the corrupt world system and unholy compromise.
( James 1:27 ) " Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. "
b)From those in the church who sin and refuse to repent.
( I Corinthians 5:9-11 ) " I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world,or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for them must ye needs go out of the world. But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such as one no not to eat. "
c)From false teachers, churches, or cults who teach theological error and deny Biblical truths.
( II John 10-11 ) " If there come any umto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: for he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. "

Our attitude in separation must be one of:
a)hatred toward sin, unrighteousness, and the corrupt world system.
( I John 2:15 ) " Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. "
b)opposition toward false doctrine.
( Galatians 1:9 ) " As we said before, so say I now again, if any man teach any other gospel unto you than that ye have recieved, let him be accursed."
c)genuine love toward those from whom we must separate.
( Galatians 6:1 ) " Brethern, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such as one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. "
d) and a fear of God as they perfect holiness.
( II Corinthians 7:1 ) " Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. "

The purpose of separation is that we as God’s people might persevere in:
a) salvation,
( I Timothy 4:16 ) " Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. "
b) faith,
( I Timothy 6:20-21 ) " O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings , and oppositions of science falsely so called: which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. "
c) holiness,
( II Corinthians 7:1 )( recited above )
d)live wholly for God as our Lord and Father,
( Matthew 22:37 ) "…Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. "
e)and convince the unbelieving world of the truth and blessing of the gospel.
( Philippians 2:15 ) "…be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world. "

If we separate ourselves properly, God Himself rewards us by drawing near with His protection, blessing, and fatherly care. He promises to be everything that a good Father should be. He will be our counselor and guide. He will love and cherish us as His own children.
( II Corinthians 6:16-18 ) ( recited above )

The refusal of believers to separate themselves from evil, the false, and the unclean, will inevitably result in the loss of their fellowship with God, of their acceptance by the Father, and of their privileges of being children of God.
( I John 1:6-7 ) " If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. "

This is one example of why a literal interpretation of the bible sucks.

According to John, Christians aren’t allowed to love: puppies, beer, kissing a beautiful woman, the beginning of football season, a fast car, volcanic spicy chicken wings, fantasizing about Angelina Jolie, or fishing.

Is this what you want to be separated from? Funny… but sad, too. Tell ya what, I’ll love all of those things and much much more to make up for y’all who don’t. You see, that way, it all evens out.

Good luck with your “holy austerity” and whatnot… hope it works out for you.

Yeah, it’s obviously a great idea to avoid enjoying yourself or enjoying this lifetime…

Exactly.

And if you don’t believe in a literal interpretation, then ANYTHING can be up for grabs. You can have people who don’t believe in Jesus because that was just a parable, but they are still Christians because they don’t eat shrimp!

Remember people, God Hates Shrimps!

(II Timothy 2:15)" Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly deviding the word of truth."

In reading and studying the word of God, there are two basic kinds of questions one should ask of every biblical passage: those that relate to context and those that relate to content. The questions of context are also of two kinds: historical and literary. To clear things up, let us focus on literary context.

Literary context means that words only have meaning in sentences, and for the most part biblical sentences only have meaning in relation to preceding and succeeding sentences. With this in mind let us return to the scripture in question.

(I John 2:15)" Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. "

To keep this in context we need to read the following verse.

(I John 2:16) " For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. "

The term world often refers to the vast system of this age which Satan promotes and which exists independent of God. It consist not only in the obviously evil, immoral, and sinful pleasures of the world, but also refers to a spirit of rebellion, resistance, or indifference to God and his revelation that exists within all human enterprises that are not under the Lordship of Christ. In this age Satan uses the world’s ideas, morality, philosophies, psychology, desires, governments, culture, education, science, art, medicine, music, economic systems entertainment, mass media, religions, sports, agriculture, etc. to oppose God, His people, His Word, and His righteous standards. For example, Satan will use the medical profession to advocate and promote the killing of unborn babies, agriculture to promote life-destroying drugs such as alcohol and narcotics, education to promote ungodly and humanistic philosophy, and the entertainment media to destroy godly standards. Believers must be aware that behind all human enterprises there is a spirit, force, or power that moves against God and His Word, some to a lesser degree, some to a greater degree. Finally, the world also includes all man-made religious systems and all unbiblical, worldly, or lukewarm Christian organizations and churches.

Loving the world defies our fellowship with God and leads to spiritual destruction. It is impossible to love the world and the Father at the same time. To love the world means being in intimate fellowship with and devotion to it’s values, intrests, ways, and pleasures; it means taking pleasure in or enjoying what is offensive and opposed to God. Note, of course, that the term world and earth are not synonymous; God does not forbid a love for the created, i.e., nature, mountians, forests, etc.

In (Genesis I), we see all that God created: light, firmament, dry land, light-bearers, fish and birds, and animals and humans. In verse (31) it is stated " And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good."

God does not forbid man to love those things that make up the world. He does object a love for those things in the world that opposes Him and takes a place in the belivers heart over Him.

In the scripture in question,(I John 2:15), the word “love” in the Greek is “Agapao” which means to love ardently or supremely. This love in the bible is always used in relationship of God to man and redeemed man back to God. In other words, God was saying that we were not to love the world with the same love that was reserved for Him only.

There is another Greek word for love. This word is “Phileo” which means to be fond of. Now this is the kind of love we can have for puppies, kissing women, football, cars (I have a 68 Chevelle SS which I am it’s only owner), chicken wings, Angelina Jolie, and fishing (Luke 24:41-42) and Jesus said " Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish…"

As for God hating shrimp (Acts 10:13-15) " And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter, kill, and eat. But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common."

In the Old Testament, God listed a group of foods that they were not to eat because he knew that they would be bad in the long run to mans health. In the New Testament, (Acts 10:9-16), God gives the OK to eat these foods.

So not only is God the creator of everything, he is also a dietician. Cool.

Seriously though, good luck with the holy austerity… I mean that. If that’s how you want to live your life, I will not try to discourage you – go hog wild.

Best wishes

A very logical and rational essay by Bertrand Russel.

“A man who claims to know god and his will is the definition of ignorance”

I am not normally into reading newer translations, but I have to say that this version does clarify some things. If I am really studying a verse I usually compare KJV, NIV and the Amplified Bible to get a better understanding. It also helps to understand the context of what is before and after.

1 John 2:15 (The Message)
The Message (MSG)
15-17Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world?wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important?has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out?but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.

The following link has has many different translations in many languages that are searchable.
