TM79's Training Journal

Hell of a run Trent. I feel your pain on the diet man. For some reason the weight is really sticking with me this go around. I haven’t been super strict but I have been pretty close to being on the money. It sucks!

Here is to hoping you are in the 170s and I am in the 240s again.

This describes my diet perfectly over the last year and a half. I still do it. I try to break even on calories or dip into the red. But ultimately I need to tighten up on the diet. I suppose it could be worse. Half assing the diet is still better than not doing it at all. I’m still happy to be only 5 pounds away from my target weight. Just need to tighten up. Hold on, let me go get another beer… :joy: :joy: :joy:

Surfing – Wrightsville Beach, Access 35
1:30:21, 500 Cals, 105 BPM

Comments: I knew it! Ha ha ha ha… Seriously, how do you finish the day with a 700-calorie deficit and wake up weighing more than the day before? Starting to think dieting is just not my thing.

Surfing: Busted out the yard in a hurry, then rushed down to the beach to meet my buddy. He was getting out right as I was paddling out so it ended up being a solo mission. Took the longboard out and caught some fun ones. Got covered up on one and the lip actually hit me in the side of the head. Ha ha… Good times…

LoL. It’s crazy. I don’t know about you but it could be your watch is overestimating your calorie burn.
I know mine isn’t accurate on my cal burn. From what I can tell it’s over 500 calories off and probably closer to 750 cals off. I wish I was burning 5000 cals a day. LoL.

I think all those years dieting have slowed my metabolism down.

Surfing scars are cooler than work scars. :sunglasses:

It probably is. I know very well that it overestimates my calories while surfing. It may be close to accurate on everything else. Not sure what yours is counting but mine is probably around 3,000 cals/day or on a typical day with about an hour workout.

Surfing – Wrightsville Beach – Blockade Runner
1:15:58, 415 Cals, 101 BPM

Comments: Just happened to wake up at 5:00AM today so I went ahead and went surfing at dawn this morning. I paddled out at 6:20AM, seconds before the sun rose over the ocean. It was a gorgeous morning out there. I was all alone for about 30 minutes and then a few other people paddled out. I chatted with another guy and girl for a little while and we traded some fun waves, both rights and lefts. Stopped for bagels and coffee after and still made it home by 8:30 to take the kids to soccer. It was a good surf session. My foot has been hurting a little today so hopefully that goes away. Big shout out to Shane today. Happy 45’th birthday old timer!

Awesome I’ve been to Wrightsville Beach and it is pretty nice but you can’t beat Saint Petersburg Florida on the west coast side

Indeed. One day a few years ago I was in Tampa for work and drove out to Clearwater, then down to St Pete, before heading back up to Tampa. It was a gorgeous stretch of coast. They don’t get a lot of waves though. Beaches along the Carolina coast have a different feel and charm to them. Most are sleepy beach towns that have changed little over the last half century. Wrightsville is somewhat unique among them and probably resembles a hybrid between the classic Carolina sleepy beach town and a more trendy California beach town. Lord knows the real estate prices here are starting to get close to those in CA…

While we are on this subject, I think the most pristine beach I have ever set foot on was higher up the FL pan handle in Pensacola. I have never felt such fine white sand under my feet. It was amazing…

Thank you for the shoutout Trent. Feeling like an old timer this morning. LoL.

Beautiful shot of the beach man! That sounds like a perfect way to start a day off!

Comments: Last week of the cycle. Doing sets of 12, which is always a blast.

Session: Reps of 12 are rough. They’re even harder on Monday morning. Got ‘em done though. Pretty good accessory session. A round of medium-ish effort AMRAP sets followed by a round of lower effort AMRAP sets.

Metcon at the Park: It’s a pretty day outside. I actually went to the beach first to see if it was breaking but the wind and tide were all over it. So, I went to the park instead and did a metcon. I ended up making this up as I went. I started doing step-ups at the bleacher, then ran to the pump house, did 20 crunches, then ran to the pull-up/dip bars, did 3 rounds of 5 PU/8Dips, then back to the pump house for crunches, then back to the bleacher and repeated 2 more times. This was a good metcon. I love the looks I get from people when I’m just doing everything with pretty much no breaks. Ha ha ha… Good times…

Looks like a great day with and without the iron Trent. You got a lot done today. That metcon looked like it was very effective at keeping the heart up.

12 reppers are always tough. Especially on squats.

The more I read your surfing adventures the more I learn about surfing. For instance, I never really thought that it mattered how the waves were breaking, I figured you could surf about any wave as long as they were there. Probably why I always eat it while playing on a boogie board in the gulf. LoL.

Thanks Shane. Ha ha, yep, it matters how the waves are breaking. The idea is to “go down the line”, so you are riding either right or left. Right or left is determined by which way the wave breaks as you are in the water and looking toward shore (so the opposite of they way you look at the wave from the beach). My stance is regular foot (left foot in front) so I am better at surfing rights because I am facing the wave and can see where I’m going. Going left puts me with my back to the wave and requires me to turn my head and look over my shoulder to see where I’m going. This is called “going backside.” Conversely, if you are a goofy footer, you have your right foot in front and it is easier to go left/harder to go right.

In some areas of the world, there are point breaks, meaning the swell hits a landmass that point out into the sea and causes the waves to break in one direction or the other. Where I live, it is “beach break”, which means the waves just come in and hit a sandbar, etc. and break in both directions. Beach breaks are harder to surf because you never really know what is coming (which direction to go, etc.) until the wave approaches you. It requires a lot more of what I refer to as “reactive surfing.” Beach break waves generally break less consistently that point break waves so you are having to react to what is happening in front of you without really having time to think.

Point Break

Personally, I have never surfed a point break, but have heard it is amazing. You paddle out and sit in the break zone and just wait for the wave. The only thing you are timing is the takeoff. You already know what direction you are going and more or less, what to expect. I can’t even imagine how nice that would be. Ha ha ha…

So next time you’re in the gulf. Try to predict which way the waves are going to break and go right or left.

Surfing - Wrightsville Beach – Access 38
Stats: 57:05, 377 Cals, 116 BPM

Comments: Definitely about time for a week off. Everything is hurting…

Session: Reps of 12 are done. Hallelujah! Changed up the accessory work and did some heavier reps this morning instead. It still sucked. The Arnold’s went straight into DB curls which smoked the grip. I was going to do a metcon but didn’t have time. I will plan to do some sort of conditioning or surfing (or both) at lunch today.

Surf: Kept checking the cams this morning at work and the Southend seemed to be the only place that was really breaking. Nice longboard waves breaking in the knee to thigh range with a rare waist high set. I got out there around 10:30AM and there was a decent crowd in the water. Glad I got out there then as the wind started picking up around 11:00AM. Despite the crowd, I still managed to get about 10 waves. None were out of this world, but they were all decent. Low tide was at 11:00AM so the timing worked out well. Most were long lefts that softened up a little quicker than I would have preferred. That was my first time surfing at the Southend since December or January. I really like it down there. To be that crowded, the vibe is pretty mellow.

Have a good day!

@tm79 very good workout can I ask you the name of the workout you were doing or have you just made that up on your own

Strong on pullups here btw. Keep at it!

@fitguy442002 Thanks for stopping by. I made that up on my own. I program my own cycles, generally about 5-6 weeks in length with active rest weeks in between. Would be happy to elaborate more or even assist with programming if you would like.

Thank you my friend. Many of those sets would not pass the Marine Corps form requirements but not bad for me.
