Ha ha. Fair enough. I usually do work during cardio and only have a ten minute commute so that’s about it for me.
I’ll check out the 56 minute mark. ![]()
Foot Update: The foot has gotten a little easier to walk on and bear weight. It still hurts and is swollen. My big toe remains stiff. I have been wearing loosely laced running shoes all week long and even that amount of squeezing on my foot is extremely painful. By the time I get home from work I can’t get out of those shoes fast enough. Then, I put my foot up for a while and put on some topical NSAID cream. Within about 10 minutes it usually feels better. Then I put on flip flops and walk around outside with the kids. It feels significantly better in flip flops. Today, I finally broke down and wore flip flops to work and am sitting here at the desk with very little pain. I might just stick to that for a while.
My mother seems to think it is gout as my dad suffered from that for most of his adult life. Evidently he took a prescription for it, as well as tart cherry supplements. That seemed to control his pretty well. He quit drinking at the age of 30 so I have no comparative data there. Other than that, I am probably doing more of the right things than he did.
-Healthy Weight: This is about as good as I can get it…
-Drinking Water: I probably drink at least 8 bottles of water a day, if not more.
-Red Meat: I do eat a lot of red meat. Typically, I opt for steak over chicken on just about anything. Yesterday I ordered pulled pork thinking I was doing the right thing but was later informed that pork is also red meat.
OK, so doing bad on that one.
-High-Fructose Corn Syrup: I don’t drink soda and generally avoid foods that contain that.
-Alcohol: OK, so I drink beer pretty much everyday, but usually in moderation.
-High-purine Seafood: I don’t really eat seafood.
-Cherries: I started drinking cherry juice the last few days as it reportedly helps with gout. That shit tastes like cough syrup and will have you running to the bathroom within an hour or two. If I end up having gout I will probably opt for a cherry supplement instead. Hopefully that is easier on the bowels.
Of course, there is the possibility that this is just injury related. We shall see… Doing any type of lower body work is looking doubtful for next week. I will probably just do upper body. The biggest PITA is that I can’t really do cardio at all right now. Upper body metcons are OK, but I’m not trying to overly tax my upper body and end up with an overuse injury. Hopefully the foot will get better soon so that I can at least do some LISS.
Damn man. Sorry to read all this.
I know if your dad was still alive I am sure he would offer the typical dad solution by pulling out his pocket knife and offering to cut it off.
Good thing I never took my dad up on any of those offers or I wouldn’t have any limbs.
I think we ha the same Dad.
Yes he would. Ha ha… He was actually really good about talking to you about health issues because he had most of them too and was all about telling you what helped or solved the problem.
Foot Update: My foot was hurting pretty bad yesterday. I finished off the day with a daddy/daughter dance at my daughter’s elementary school. Not exactly good for the foot either. Slept like shit last night and woke up 4 times with my son, who kept running into master bedroom. He is puking and not feeling well…
On a brighter note, I finally took some Prednisone today and within an hour noticed a big difference in my foot. This afternoon, I ended up doing 4 hours of yard work. Never would have considered that in the last several days. The pain has gone from about a 7 to about a 2-3, and the swelling is almost completely gone. It still hurts some but overall, a pretty big improvement. I guess that points toward it being gout as I have read several accounts online of people taking prednisone and quickly feeling better. I’m not sure what to do going forward. I will plan to keep taking the prednisone for the remaining few days. I am hoping to not have to cut out beer and red meat. That would suck… Definitely happy to have some relief though.
Sorry to hear that you think it might be gout. At least the prednisone brought some relief though.
No red meat or beer? Damn, that would be rough! Hopefully your Dr can prescribe something.
Thanks Shane. Yeah, I would almost rather die than stop eating red meat and drinking beer… I will see what they say and might try to work with a dietitian after that. I don’t like taking drugs so hopefully I can control it with diet or supplements.
For what it’s worth, I’m an RD and would be happy to help you out if you decide to go the dietitian route or if you just have a few questions. ![]()
Thanks for checking in. I may take you up on that.

Comments: Our son puked between the couch cushions yesterday evening. That was a nice, hour-long cleanup project…
Then, he was up almost all night last night. Poor guy is feeling like crap… Thankfully, my wife got up with him. Unfortunately, I was up most of the night too, due to Prednisone. The foot is feeling pretty good at least. I would say on a scale of 1-10, I am back to a consistent 7 or so. The morning workout session was a shit show due to our son going nuts and me having to pause to help him out, taking my daughter to school and going to the grocery store… Still managed to get a little work in. This is a ramp up week anyway so there wasn’t much to do.
Session: The foot hurt a little on a few occasions this morning. Not bad though. It did pretty well under the bar for squats. I felt strong as hell on bench. Maybe it is the roids I’m on… LOL
Accessory felt really solid. I added some LISS in there just to burn a few more calories. I slowed the treadmill down to 2.5 mph (normally I do 3 mph) to take it easy on the foot. Conditioning was nice and quick. Done.
Follow up appointment with the podiatrist this afternoon. Hopefully I will get some direction on how to move forward with this. She was pretty worthless though so my expectations are not that high…

Comments: Actually slept pretty well last night for the first time since I’ve taken Prednisone. Definitely needed that.
Foot Update: I went to the podiatrist yesterday and was delighted (sarcasm) to receive a cortisone shot in the joint behind my big toe. Now I am to finish up the prednisone over the next few days and then start taking a hardcore anti inflammatory pill after that. The uric acid test came back on the higher side of normal and the Sed rate was excellent at 2. So no gout diagnosis quite yet (although she seemed to think the uric acid may have gone down since my initial flare up). So my love affair with steak and beer will continue, at least for a little while. The foot is feeling pretty good. A little sore this morning. I have to do a lot of stair climbing today in Myrtle Beach so hopefully it survives all of that. Overall, I am not happy with that podiatrist. She always seems to be in a big hurry and doesn’t wan to answer my questions. Think I may go get a second opinion. For now though, at least my foot is feeling decent.
Session: Good session. Strength went by quickly. Accessory was solid. That was a fantastic metcon. Especially for training OHP/Pull-ups.
Have a good day!
I like the read of that mega set…! Coming back nicely!
Thanks so much. I try to superset things to give it more of a conditioning component. It also helps to save time. ![]()

Comments: Our son woke us up last night again so I did not get that much sleep. Still managed to get up around 5:45 but only ended up having time for about 30 minutes of training. Ideally I would have done 20 minutes of LISS and at least a 20 minute metcon. Only managed half of that today.
Metcon: This was supposed to be a 20-minute AMRAP. Had to cut it short to get to work earlier this morning. I might go back and do this again, changing the box step-overs to goblet squats, or something a little quicker and more taxing. 123 BPM is fairly low for a metcon.
I am thinking of joining a gym (02 Fitness) that is close to my office. It would still be about 10-15 minutes from my house but only 5 minutes from the office. If my schedule allows, I could split my workouts up and take less time in the morning. Then go to the gym at lunch and knock out some more. Might go check it out and see.
Some solid work done in here this week Trent. Sorry to hear about your son getting sick. Couch cushions? Damn, that has to be at least a 8 out of 10 on the suck scale. LoL
Good to hear the uric acid test favorable. Definitely go get a second opinion, nothing worse than having a Dr you don’t trust.
I like the gym plan. Hitting it at lunch time really works well for me. ![]()
Thanks Shane. Yeah, just puking on the couch is one thing, but puking between the cushions (and sections of the couch) has to be as bad as it gets. There is a ton of stuff going around here right now as the kids have been masked for two years up until a month ago. It’s pretty bad…
Thanks on the uric acid. Definitely going to get a second opinion. Hell, I had to call them and ask what they injected me with because she never told me or gave me any info at my visit.
Then she sent my prescription to a pharmacy in New Jersey. ![]()
Yeah, the lunchtime gym session would be cool, but I don’t really have time to shower and change back into my work clothes so I would have to sit there all stank nasty for the rest of the day. That is the only drawback I can think of…

Comments: The foot is slightly sore this morning. I have been tapering off of the Prednisone with only one pill left to take today. I’m not sure what effect the cortisone shot will have. Still waiting on the Rx NSAID to go through as well. Hopefully the foot keeps feeling OK.
Metcon: That went a little better than yesterday’s. Definitely harder. Still, there were enough breaks between movements that it wasn’t horrible. I was doing the ring push-ups with my toes pointed and the tops of my feet resting on a foam roller. This kept the weight off of my toes. Very nice work around for the issues I’ve been having.
Might try to surf later. Have a good day!

Comments: Ended up surfing yesterday afternoon and had a really good time. The sets were easily chest high and I had a blast on the potato. Went out there this morning for some leftovers. It was more in the waist-stomach high range and pretty racy so I rode the longboard. Managed to catch a few decent ones. I usually just tucked into the curl and chilled. Nothing crazy. It was good to get out there and get the blood flowing. My foot has felt really good today. It was a little sore yesterday, which had me pretty nervous as yesterday was my last day of Prednisone. I was hoping to join a gym this week so I could do some other form of cardio tomorrow morning (other than running) but it looks like that isn’t going to happen. I might just have to come up with a metcon. Even if the foot feels good, running is probably a bad idea right now. I want it to be feeling great before doing that.
Nice work in here Trent. Great way to find a work around to still get work done with a hurt foot. That is also some great news that the foot was feeling better yesterday, and it sounds like you got some great surfing in as well.
Hopefully you guys are getting some of this great weather up there.
Have a good weekend.
