Thanks Shane. I was expecting to get up with a shattered hip or something but managed to roll over onto my ass before hitting the ground hard (but after hitting my foot, knee and elbow). Still managed to save my beer though so it wasn’t a total loss. And luckily none of the neighbors or kids saw me. Yeah, he seemed thankful in his speech, but very arrogant. I respect him as a coach as he has had a tremendous amount of success, but other than that, he seems like an asshole. Surfing ain’t happening today. The wind is blowing about 30 mph sideshore and I don’t have time to be walking way down the beach after I drift for a mile or two. Might try to hit it first thing in the morning instead.
Comments: It was a teacher workday today, so I finally didn’t have to take my daughter to school for a change. I woke up early and ended up getting down to the beach around 6:30AM. The surf was waist – chest high and clean. I probably got about 10 waves in that time span and, ironically, the first one was the best. I caught a nice right and got 3 solid turns in. That hasn’t happened in a long time. I caught a few more rights and usually ended up with about one turn before it shut down. My only two attempts at going left ended in a closeout and going over the falls. Overall, it was a fun session. I rode the potato and it was just about perfect for those conditions. That is probably going to be it for a while as it is going to be blown out the next few days. What a treat it was to go out at dawn and surf for almost two hours. Then leave right as the parking meters turned on and making it to work at 9:00AM. Looking forward to more of that in a few months when school is out.

Comments: It looks like my long run will no longer be on Saturday mornings. My wife and I talked a lot about it the last few days and evidently my run is limiting our ability to do anything on Saturday morning so I will now look to plug it in during the week somehow. I hate that as I have been running on Saturdays for almost a decade now. But I suppose this is the nature of family life with young kids. Now the main question becomes, when do I fit it in? I’m thinking it will be a second workout on a weekday. Maybe at lunchtime. But that would involve me sitting around for the remainder of the day in sweaty clothes, which I don’t like to do. We shall see…
Session: Those sets of deads didn’t feel that bad surprisingly. The high rep supersets definitely take it out of you though. I must be getting soft… Good Accessory lineup. The metcon was short and sweet. Might try and surf this morning or possibly go for a run.
Nice workout Trent. Toes to bars are always impressive to me because I never do them. They look so damn hard to do. Your pull ups are always impressive.
Bring you an extra change of clothes for after the run. It is not convenient but an option.
The good news is that soon enough the kids will be big enough to run and you can take the family with you. Even if the wife didn’t go, she would probably be more than happy to have a little time alone. Or put your daughter on a bike and grab a running stroller for your son.
That may be an option. I’m usually so exhausted by Friday that I sleep in on Saturday. We need to get our evenings going a lot more efficiently and then that may be more of a possibility.
Thanks Shane. TTB are not that bad IMO. You can build up some momentum and that makes it easier. If you do them slow, then yes, they are hell on earth. I don’t do them slow. Not that I don’t like “this stage”, but I am really looking forward to the kids being a little older. I would love to take the kids running. I’ve done it with my daughter on a bike a few times and she usually just wants to do 2 miles so I do a loop and then go run some more. The running stroller just needs to happen. Nothing else to say about that. Time to stop procrastinating. On a more global level, I really look forward to being able to actually go and do stuff with my kids. Like going surfing or trips out west (Montana, Wyoming, Utah, etc.). I figure I’m probably 5-6 years from really doing that with my son. By that time my daughter will be 12-13 and probably won’t want to hangout with us.
Yesterday I worked out and then ended up surfing twice. Once in the morning. Once in the afternoon. During the afternoon session, I landed funny on my board and hurt my left foot. It seems to have gotten a little better today but still hurts. I’m hoping to do a metcon tomorrow and maybe surf after. We’ll see…

Comments: Happy 72’nd angel birthday Dad! Miss you every day!
Foot still hurts. Now it is just the joint behind my big toe that is swollen and hurts.
Metcon: Not too bad. I’m sure it would have been horrible if I could do it as written but I can’t really do either of those movements. The pistols were very assisted and were more a combination of pistols and ring rows. Ha ha… Pretty dismal calorie burn. Might go surf after I drop my daughter off to burn a few more.
Surf: Decent session. I actually swapped cars with my wife this morning so I was able to get the longboard in there. First time riding that in a while. Managed to get a few decent ones. The sets were in the waist – stomach range and nobody else was out. I forgot how many more waves you can get on the longboard. My previous sessions this week consisted, sometimes, of only 2-5 waves in an hour. I probably caught 20 waves in an hour on the longboard. There was definitely more of a conditioning component to that. Still there was a wait between sets and I eventually started waiting 10 minutes or so between waves. It was good to get out there.
Looks like I will skip my run this week anyway since my foot is still hurting. Maybe I can get some metcon work in instead.

Comments: Woke up at 6:30AM and was in the garage by 7:20:AM for this. Got through it pretty well. All sets were unbroken. I guess this is the official start of Murph prep.
Happy Belated birthday to your dad. Dads really are the coolest. I miss mine as well.
Nice work put in here the last couple days.
Sorry for the lack of being around. Work has been nutty.
Good luck with the Murph prep. I was listening to Jim Wendler on Dave Tate’s podcast. That guy has turned into a metcon animal. Dude is doing a ton of weight vest work and I think he said he does 2 Murphs a day.
Thanks Shane. No worries. That is mind blowing that Wendler is a metcon addict now. Most folks with a powerlifting background think metcons are witch craft. I would love to hear his thoughts on whether he thinks they are counterproductive to making gains on the main lifts. My personal belief is that they are counterproductive.
On Wednesday of last week, I hurt my left foot when I landed awkwardly on my surfboard. The pain was mainly in the joint behind my left toe. (I have hurt this joint several times before) It wasn’t that bad until yesterday afternoon, when it got so bad that I could barely put any weight on it. I’m not sure if it was the metcon I did yesterday morning or the climbing up and down the ladder but it has been hell on earth ever since. Right now most of my foot is swollen and red. I have barely left the couch all day. If this is anything like the previous times, it will likely be a week or two before it is somewhat back to normal. At least this happened right before a scheduled rest week. I have been working toward gaining ground on conditioning though, so I will hate to loose that. Maybe I can get out here and do something by mid-week… Until then, I will try to get in to see a podiatrist down here as I don’t have one that I go to yet.
He said he has been doing weight vest work for about 5 years. He made the impression on the show that he doesn’t really do a lot of heavy BB work anymore.
Sorry to hear about your foot.
Hope the Dr has some good news for you. I know that has to be really frustrating especially in the middle of your Murph training. It sucks how something as little as a toe can cause so much pain.
Thanks Shane. Luckily, I have over two months until I plan to do Murph and had just kicked that training off. Still plenty of time to get it in gear for that. That’s funny about Wendler. Never would have thought he would be a big metcon guy. Might have to check out that podcast.
Thanks Shane. I don’t know how you guys find time to listen to these. I made it for about 15 minutes before my wife needed something the other night. I will try to listen to the rest at some point. Honestly, it is pretty amazing the people find stuff to talk about for 3 hours. I’m usually good for maybe an hour tops.
