Growing up, all my friends worked in service industries that are largely tip-based. They tipped well. My parents tipped well also. As a result, I tip well.
I just don’t buy clothes in department stores. WTF?
I saw a tip-cup in a coffeeshop the other day. I’m talking to the barist…i?a? what’s a male barista? My buddy says ‘this is how it’s done. Wait for him to ring up the change… make eye contact… and let him SEE that you’re tipping’
I’m like ‘what’s with this dollar tip thing? Just throw in the leftover change and be done with it.’
The barister’s like ‘oh, yeah, you got some pennies to go with that? How about some leftover gum?’
And the coffee was shitty too. I swear to God, if another cafe was open 24 hours I would never go to Epoch again…
I see these tip jars as receptacle for the loose change I don’t want floating around my purse. Or sometimes the cashier will fish in the jar for a few coins to make exact change for me so I don’t have MORE change to handle.
As a waitress, I definitely remember the good and bad tippers. You tip me crap and get sat in my section on your next visit, you bet I’m not going to give you much attention. Tips ARE my wages and I bust my butt to earn them too.
The whopping $2.15 an hour I make usually adds up to a $0.00 check after taxes from my tips are taken out. Tip jars at establishments where people make above minimum wage are a joke IMO.
WTF? I’d have told him to fuck himself. That’s beyond rude.
Tipping is optional people. You hand it out for exceptional service. God I hate this mentality of people these days where they expect something for nothing.
I go to the mall and get pizza, there’s a tip jar. At the clothing store as someone else mentioned. I hate having to tip when I get a hair cut. Its their F’ing job. Pizza delivery boys too…
I totally disagree with tipping the pizza delivery boy. He gets his gas covered, makes at least 10 USD / hr and I have to tip his sorry ass? No sir. He did me no favors. Tips are given for favors, not for doing basic work.
Just random thoughts
I agree with Mr. Pink. Get a law to increase wages, do something, but cut out this tipping BS. Its not MY job to ensure someone gets a proper paycheck, its the employer and the government. If we REALLY cared about people’s wages in this country, we’d stop voting in people who block increasing the minimum wage in this country.
FINAL THOUGHT:
Maybe if you have a “real” job, you don’t get tips? That’s how I see it. Tips denote expendibility.

I don’t know where you’re getting you’re numbers from. Maybe it’s different in Louisiana. When I lived in California I delivered pizzas. I was paid state minimum wage(maybe slightly above, I don’t remember). I got 50 cants per delivery. Maybe that covers my gas, but not maintenance on my car for excess use and convenience for the customer to not get off their ass and get their own pizza.
I disagree. I like the idea of tipping. I like “punishing” someone with a lower wage if they do a job poorly. And I really like rewarding a job well done. I don’t want to be forced to pay the same amount for service that is far from equal.
There’s nothing wrong with these jobs. Someone has to do them. I would prefer someone that knows what they’re doing and that likes their job to do them.
In fact, when I retire, I would love to be a barber. Since I’m not going to retire completely, because I think retiring is a silly and unnecessary luxury.

Here is the clip from Reservoir Dogs that I spoke of, funny stuff.
If you haven’t seen this movie yet, I highly suggest it.
I saw that movie recently, and while it had a decent story…everyone dying at the end? What the heck was that all about? That left me and my friend in a bit of a haze, we’ve been on a bad movie streak lately where everyone dies at the end. That, No Country For Old Men, then Rescue Dawn which was just weird…
PS if tipping meant food was cheap at restaurants, I would be all for it…but food isn’t cheap, so I don’t like it. It’s just an excuse for the place to pay their waitresses crap.

If I get coffee and a reach-around from a spider monkey while reciting the pledge of allegiance… then I might tip.
Is this from Scrubs? I remember an episode about Dr. Cox having a tip char and saying something like that to the person who gave him his coffee. I always get excited when I know a quote…then again maybe I should be ashamed of being so dorky.

Tipping has become insane.

Not when I delivered pizza. I got gas money and a couple bucks an hour plus tips. Without tips I would rather have had a minimum wage job.
I worked as a server and bartender during college and grad school. Tips were pretty much all of my income. As noted above, my paycheck was usually $0.00 due to a requirement that I claim eight percent of my total sales as tips. As such, nothing pissed me off more than busting my hump for someone and then being left a fuckin’ dollar. In short, it cost me money to wait on that asshole.
I think that tipping is a great way to incent effort by your waitstaff. Have you ever noted how fast your server moves at a place like McDonalds, relative to a real restaurant? Ever have a server that essentially made your evening? Went out of their way to get you something special? I have and I regularly did. As such, it is worth it to me to pay someone a few bucks extra and get good service. Service will make or break a meal.
I generally tip 20% regardless of quality of service. If a server is a complete fuckup, I will usually ask them if they are new or something. I generally want to give them the benefit of the doubt.
You usually only get excellent service in a restaurant whose prices command that the tip be considerably larger. For instance, the best meal I’ve ever had was at Il Mulino in Vegas. Service was spectacular, but the bill was around $400. Going beyond 20% in that case is silly, because an $80 tip for 90 minutes of work is still fucking phenomenal.
On that note, anyone have any idea how much to tip a captain? That’s the guy at a really nice restaurant that seats you and gives the specia
