Tiny Freak Goes Ninja

Stopping in to say hi!!

< 9 min pace is fantastic!! Great work, Kimba!

And I second what Nadia said. 400s are NASTY! I’m actually going to go run some tonight

400x6, rest intervals are 200m. All to be completed in less than 27 mins.

And this is me doing the “easier” runs in place of what I was doing, which were: 800x1, 400x2, 200x3, 100x4 (and you’re supposed to do this 2x, btw). Maybe when you’re feeling energetic you can give that one a whirl… maniacal laugh

That said, I love sprinting!!

Well, I figured out the real reason I wimped on the sprints the other day: I’ve come down with my husband’s cold. Blech.

Nadia, if a 400 is a test of will, that goes double for a 600 or an 800. Its a constant mental battle for me to give any of those distances a sustained effort. Its almost as if I need to cheerlead myself the whole way (c’mon, you can do it! don’t slack! pick up the pace! harder! etc.) Indeed, a whole lot of sustained mental effort.

Joe, stay safe with that unsettled weather. As nice as 70+ degrees might be, I’d take a snowstorm over a tornado.

lil power, thanks for checking in on me!

Maschy, you are a sick, sick woman. That ladder looks killer. I think that sprinting is HIGHLY complementary to lifting. My glutes and hams get an enormous workout from this.

I figured out that I was somewhat sick in the weight room last night. Probably working at about 80% of my normal energy levels.

I was hoping to try for 11 chinups, a PR. But that just wasn’t happening today. I was grateful (note, my New Years resolution in action) for not feeling sicker and being strong enough to do what I did.

Today would normally be a run day, but I’m going to rest instead and hope I’ll feel closer to normal for Friday’s deadlift training. We had planned to go downhill skiing today, but that just didn’t make any sense to spend all that money and be at less than 100%.

Oh feel better soon. I’m blowing and snuffling on this side of the Atlantic too. (My NOSE, you dirty minded people).

sorry to hear you caught that crap Kimba.

rest up.

400 repeats - kill me now! That is such a tough distance. Props to you for doing them. I don’t know if that is something I could voluntarily bring myself to do. If you wanted a guaranteed spot on my old HS track team all you had to do was run the 400 because nobody ever did.

Hope you kick that cold quick.

Cal, I hope by now you are feeling better. This cold is a coughing one for me. Which is keeping me from the running, but not the lifting.

Frenchie, I just really hate being home sick. It takes alot of reframing to avoid being a grumpy bitch. I’m only partially succeeding.

LS, I actually don’t really mind 400 repeats. Call me crazy (and many do!)

Despite not feeling 100% well, I decided to train last night anyway. I’m glad I did, even though I took it easy.

Today I’m missing the spring-like weather and am stuck home on a rest day. I’m making this Paula Deen pulled pork recipe to make me hate this less:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/bbq-pork-sandwich-recipe/index.html

I felt better for training last weekend, I honestly did. I didn’t train on the day I felt worst, but I got to the gym the other days and even got some rep PRs. As long as it’s not 'flu, I don’t see a problem with it. (I haven’t done cardio, though. I don’t think stressing your heart when you have a virus is a smart thing to do).

Any training when you are sick is good training.

Damn fine work.

I had pulled pork takeout tonight - I bet yours turns out way better.

as for being a grumpy bitch when sick: the husband has been trained to stay the hell away and only talk when talked too.

glad your feeling better!

Ive been fighting off some stuff but I don’t have time to rest.
Two kids, a house, a dog that requires THREE WALKS A DAY!! lol and a hubby who isn’t fully mobile yet.

Agreed!! Great work getting in the gym while not feeling 100%. And mm…pulled pork!

and now all I can think about is pulled pork.

hope you’re on the mend!

Cal, I hadn’t considered heart stress when deciding on the running while virus infected. Good point. I hope by now you are feeling better.

Joe, weight training while sick hasn’t been too bad. Any heavy breathing stuff seems way out of reach, though.

Frenchie, my pulled pork came out AWESOME. I forgot the BBQ sauce, but it was still delicious.

Betty, you’ve just made me feel better. My only responsibilities are to myself and my husband and that sounds alot less exhausting than whats on your plate!

Maschy, the gym has been the highlight of the last couple of days. I’m not a good couch-sitter.

lula, like thinking about pulled pork is a bad thing?

Today, it really feels like my body is fighting this virus hard. So I’m taking it easy and hoping that I’m feeling lots better tomorrow. I did train yesterday and I’m glad I did.

Bench Press 5/3/1 day
Bar 1 x 5
72# 1 x 5
81.5# 1 x 3
91# 1 x 2 <–Rep PR +1, butt off bench for both reps

I was very happy with this. My viral status made endurance difficult, but strength was OK.

BBB 65# 3 x 5 <–just ran out of steam for the last 2 planned sets

supersetted with

1 armed BO DB rows
45# 3 x 10

And that was it for my sick day in the gym.

Two thumbs up for Robitussin cough syrup…a good nights sleep is a wondrous thing.

I’m not happy that I can’t run. Predictably, I went out and bought myself the cutest pair of running shorts ever to give me something to look forward to (they are a camo print with bright pink edging).

Patch, I totally agree. One of the benefits of being old and married is absolutely no pressure to be “out” on a “date night”. There is nothing I’d rather do on a Friday night than train.
I’m not old… nor married… but love friday night at the gym. Should I be worried?
NOPE!
(uh me too DUH)

nice work on pulling a PR so soon after a cold.

and pics of new running shorts are a must. They sound super fly

Yeah I found my cold didn’t affect my strength but needed longer to recover between sets. Good job on the rep PR. And yes, photo needed. I have to live vicariously through you because my ass is not made for wearing shorts.

Do you have pant recommendations for this running outside in the cold thing? Are there things the wind doesn’t bite through but don’t feel like a snow suit?

Hitting a PR when sick is big work. Go have a celebratory lobster roll for me.

Frenchie and Cal, indeed pictures of the new running shorts all in good time.

Patch, one of the things I like best about running is that I can stay warm and comfortable even in the cold with relatively little clothing on. At least as compared to cycling. Granted, cold and wind needs more clothing, but not much more. A good resource on what to wear is the Runners World What to Wear calculator: Runner's World

If the link doesn’t work, just google runner’s world what to wear.

What I wear on my legs down into the 20s F is a pair of tech fleece tights. If it were windy and colder than that, I would layer a pair of nylon wind pants over that, or wear my Craft XC skating pants which are close to these:

http://shop.craftsports.us/women/bottoms/axc-pant.html

Honestly, try it and see. You’ll likely be warmer outside running than you think you will.

Joe, hitting a PR while sick wasn’t my intention but I’ll take it. I’d give back the PR to be well.

Despite the fact that I still have a cough, and not a dainty sounding cough but a cough that says “TB patient”, I was feeling perky enough yesterday to go for a short and slow run/walk with my husband. Just under 1.5 miles to test things out. Verdict: I don’t think it hurt me but it probably didn’t help me any in getting better.

Later on that night, I trained squats. Getting into the weight room, I saw immediately that there was a cluster fuck of resolutioners going down. There was a bench open, so I snagged that for seated GMs. I put 2 25s down on the bench (stacked) to hit consistent depth.

Seated GMs
Bar 1 x 5
65# 1 x 5
75# 1 x 5
85# 1 x 5

By the time I was done, the high-school kid curling in the squat rack had finished up.

Squats to 4 risers/step
65# 1 x 5
75# 1 x 5
85# 1 x 3 ← felt good
95# 1 x 1 <–felt OK
105# 1 x 1 <–terrible knee cave
95# 1 x 1 OK, 1 x 2 <–bad knee cave on second rep

Nothing of interest here for the fans of powerlifting. My knee cave issue gets worse when I don’t train squats. If I do train squats, I usually get somewhere right around 100 lbs. and then everything goes to hell. On the whole, it seems worth squatting consistently just for the purpose of hitting my glutes and posterior chain even if I keep butting up against the same glass ceiling.

Walking lunges
20s 1 x 10 steps <–too tired and sick, so stopped

Pistols to bench
BW 3 x 10

supersetted with

Considering that I’m still sick, I was OK with this training. I am, however, taking today as a rest day.
