I don’t get the finish line thing either. To me, that’s when you kick it up and give it your all. That must be the difference between competitive types and non-competitive types - that and pointy elbows!
The local series I often took part in is kicking off again in March. Now they’ve added a 15K race to the 5 and 10s they were doing. God I’d like to do that - if I can get my achilles and foot problems under control!
Thanks so much for supporting my running efforts with such enthusiasm! Road racing is definitely not for the shy, retiring types at least when starting in a large field.
This race (I gather) was more of a “fun run” sort of thing rather than a serious race. Clearly lots of folks were there to have an enjoyable time gawking at the costumes, not to score a PR. For me, I simply can’t imagine showing up to a race planning not to kill myself with a good effort.
I’m planning to do a 5 mile local race in April that numbers the participants in the low hundreds rather than the thousands. This will give me plenty of time to try and get faster between now and then. And will give me a fair opportunity to get a time that isn’t dependent on my ability to navigate in heavy traffic. I’m not at all interested in running a marathon or even a half, but I’d love to get faster at the shorter race distances.
All the college students are home for break, so the weight room was very crowded last night. I will say, however, that the college kids were very focused on their training and most looked like they were athletes doing a strength program. Very respectful and able to share equipment – a nice change.
Sumo Deadlift Day
Good mornings
Bar 1 x 5
65# 1 x 5
85# 1 x 5
95# 1 x 5
105# 1 x 5
I feel like I am getting a bit stronger at these.
Sumo Deadlifts
125# (from floor using 25# plates) 1 x 5
115# (from riser) 1 x 5
135# (from floor) 1 x 5 <–narrower stance felt hard today
155# (belt on) 1 x 3 <–only a bit narrower stance felt better
165# 1 x 1
175# 1 x 1
Still working on form, specifically keeping a back arch. Perhaps incremental progress
HLRs
3 x 5 with mostly straight legs. These are also slowly improving.
I feel like I am getting a bit stronger at these.

Um…ya think?! Seriously, that GM is STRONG! You really do have a strong low back, woman. Its really incredible.
My GMs don’t go really low, though. I am working on that. But, hey! Thanks!
I haven’t given conventional pulling a good try. But I ALWAYS pull conventional when I pick the bar up (loaded with 135) to put on the rack and unload. And I always notice (1) knee cave and (2) how weak I feel vs. pulling sumo. Perhaps I should give conventional pulling a try. Who knows?!?!
HLRs are so hard! I can’t do them. Or rather, I refuse
And ps. LOVE the way you pick up 175 and then daintily step over the bar once you put it down. lol! So adorable!
I’ve gone from not being able to get my legs up on an HLR even A LITTLE BIT, to being able to do a few reasonable-looking reps. Like everything else, its just practice. And practicing what one is bad at is the hardest thing of all…
Joe, I agree…short running distances FTW! I see running as complementing my lifting. Can’t be training for a marathon and still say that.
Today’s training was a 3.44 miles at a 9 min/mile pace. I was trying hard, but some days the running is harder than other days. Today it was hard.

Noooo! Stay the course!! What you’re doing is working, so why change it? As I was told today, “scattered training equals scattered results”
I think that goes for any exercise, Kimba - some days I’m full of energy, others I can barely make it through the workout.
Wish I could be running but achilles won’t let me. Gah.
