Tiny Freak Goes Ninja

George and Frenchie, thanks for telling me what the cool kids in the over-35 crowd are doing.

DCA, always good to see you here.

theBird, thanks for saying hi. Since I think my body is perfect as it is, I decline all offers of sammiches.

alexus, I really have no overarching aim for my military presses. I think my main goal with them is to increase the weight I’m able to press overhead one time. Thus, the starting position for this is really coming out of the rack anyways. The issue of how low to bring the bar is just an issue for reps. Reps are nice, but not the main course.

About body image, I think I’ve written before that when I was younger I was much more uncomfortable with getting attention for my body. I found the checking-out and the looks and the come-ons to be threatening in some way, and I’d avoid such attention. Now, I think its wildly entertaining. I think this change in attitude has everything to do with my feeling comfortable in my own skin and confident of who I am as a person utterly independent of anyone else’s opinions. This makes me look at the objectification of my body as an amusement and not as a judgment.

Charlie, aren’t you sweet! My hammies were pretty worked after the RDLs, so I think the way we do them is beneficial. Keep on keepin’ on!

Betty, I’m not sure even with lighter weight I can “take it to da flo”. I’m up for the challenge though.

Nadia, thanks. It really helps me to have a bunch of rabbits to chase. Can’t get all happy about a measly 205 and not even from the floor when the crew here can and does pull way more.

I completely blew off Sunday’s training to go to the beach. Four hours total riding, maybe 45 min. actual sunning. Its the best feeling to zoom by the stopped beach traffic and say “suckers!” Another benefit to riding to the beach is that the fried fisherman’s plate (with onion rings instead of fries) doesn’t register on the scale the next day.

So far today I’ve done 6 chinups. I had figured doing them first thing in the AM at my lightest weight and naked (every oz. counts when you are me) would result in more reps, but I was disappointed. Not training these consistently means I’ve lost the ability to rep out 10 like last summer. I’ll plan several more sets throughout the day, seeing how I did no upper body work yesterday.

ah, the naked pull up challenge. I didn’t see that in any article

I love the balance of your bike rides with nommy foods!

Kimba your confidence and security in yourself is commendable! Happy for you.

As far as the PRs WHOOT! That IS a lot of weight!

Congrats on the PR.

I try to bring the bar down to the top of my pecs on milies. Of course that could be why I suck at them.

Betty, the issue with a naked pullup challenge is the difficulty of posting evidence.

Upscale, thanks! You’ll be showing me up on the weight front soon enough.

Joe, you don’t suck at milies. There are likely pros and cons to doing them at chin level and to the chest. I just haven’t figured them out yet.

Total chin-ups for the day: 6/5/5/5/5 = 26

I did a set every time I passed the chinup bar during the day. My upper body hasn’t felt this fresh in a long time. Generally, I train full-body on Wed. Fri. and Sun., and spend the day following these workouts feeling a bit sore.

You know, this seems like I’m doing a deload. It snuck up on me!

wow. you are a wise kimba  thanks very much for that. i think you are indeed onto something. i’m noticing now that i’m feeling all fat (baggy layers since it is winter and i’m also trying to bulk and have gained a couple kilos) that i’m feeling much more self conscious in the gym. because i’m feeling a bit insecure i suspect that people are judging me harshly - even though they probably aren’t. we really can be our own worst enemies. you really are my hero for saying of yourself right now ‘i’m happy with my body just the way i am’. and of course objectively - you deserve to be!! if it takes me 10 years to get to that point with myself i’ll be very happy indeed.

Nice job on the PR’s, RDL look great too…135x10 nice work.

alexus, on body image: do you feel that men or women are judging you? I say this, because I think women are much harsher judges of other women’s bodies than are men. For example, I was recently at the beach. There were women in skimpy bikinis showing all different body types. From slim and skinny-fat, to curvy, to very big. Seen through the eyes of a man (not that I’m a man, but having a bit more T than the average chick gives me somewhat of an idea) most of those women were eminently bang-able. A few more kilos draped on an otherwise in-shape body is very appealing…to men.

One of the things I hate most about other women is the insecurity-based cattiness. The measuring-up that occurs…“does she have a better body than me…ooh she does, that bitch…no she doesn’t, that cow.”

Cliff’s Notes: men don’t care about an extra kilo or two, women who do can go fuck themselves.

Germanone, thanks for your kind words. That is one kick-ass avi you’ve got goin’ on.

Today’s training was an early morning run before it gets too hot and humid. What a treat to be out when the world is quiet. I startled a fat bunny-rabbit, and she/he went racing across the street. Luckily not getting hit by a car, cause that would have made me feel awful.

4 min. stides/1 min walk x 4 = 20 min of moderate effort. Knee felt good, attributable I think to aggressive hip and glute strengthening, stretching and rolling. I spend AT LEAST as much time on pre-rab/re-hab as I do actually running. Sad but true. Once again, I’ll start adding extra intervals to see if I can make it to about 45 minutes of run/walking before trying a straight-through run.

I’m loving the awesomeness going on over here. Way to get those deadlifts and look great doing them. I totally agree with you about the “go fuck themselves” part. I think this is why all the women I hang out with have more testosterone than average. All they care about is if you can hold your liquor and still do something fun outside the next day (i.e. hiking, biking, rugby, pool). They are all such beauties in all athletic shapes and sizes.

Also, I’m glad your runs are going well. More prehab/rehab than running = WIN!!!

Well thanks Kimba

I agree with what you say, Kimba - I find most men don’t worry about things like a bit of cellulite or the fact your arse droops more than you’d like. They’re just grateful to get you naked.
With women, it’s about competition rather than conquest. And that’s where the problem is.

Interesting thoughts on the men v. women thing. I was thinking this the other day at the pool…it’s almost more of a compliment when you catch the women checking you out than the men. Men will check out anything with tits covered in a small piece of spandex. Good job on the pull ups, and the ability to eat what you like is a major draw to the biking!

sb, thanks for stopping by! I bet I would like your friends.

Cal, competition/conquest is a good way of describing the difference between women and men on the body image issue. Nicely said.

lula, compliments from women are in some ways better indeed! Good point.

Today’s training was some volume on bench and squats, with a set of 30 bodyweight dips thrown in for good measure. And biceps curls. I haven’t done those in forever, and I found the 12.5s to be quite difficult. I see so little point to training my biceps…they look fine to me the way they are.

A request for information: our vacation this summer includes a few days in Yosemite, a place I’ve never been. There is so much to see and do, that I’d appreciate any suggestions for how best to spend our time.

30 dips, mentioned like it was nothing. Tsk.
Re: the biceps, I started training mine after getting brachialis tendonitis. I figured strengthening around the elbow joint couldn’t really hurt, so I’m doing bis and tris again.

Truer words I have not heard…though there is an upper limit on that, to be honest.

I don’t doubt it, but the small stuff us PW worry about isn’t going to be pushing that upper limit, methinks.

x2

Lots of women I know worry about a couple of pounds here or there and most guys couldn’t care less.

Within limits.

LOL! Seriously. The dip queen reigns!

Normally, I wouldn’t think twice about training biceps either - so I’m with you on that. It wasn’t until I tried that BB style workout that I did them. So yeah, I’m quite indifferent to bicep training. Especially if I’m doing chinups which somehow always blow-up my bi’s. And yes 12.5 lbs is hard! lol! Our bro-cards have been revoked!

I know nothing about Yosemite - I’m sure it’ll be beautiful though. Westward Ho Tiny Ninja!

The discussion on “upper limits” made me smile. I think each guy has a different notion of that.

Cal and Maschy, 30 dips is not a PR (I’ve done 35 before) so I sort of ho-hum about it. If one can win awards for strong triceps, then maybe I should get one!

Today’s training was a successful 25 minute run/walk first thing this morning before it got baking hot. I added one 5 minute repeat over last time, and my knee took it like a champ. My IT band doesn’t feel sore at all, and in exchange I remain a dedicated clammer, stretcher and roller. I’ll add another 5 min. repeat to bring me up to 30 minutes next outing.

I see my ARTist today for a tune-up. That is always fun, in a painful sort of way.

Absolutely. Let’s not forget that the ultra-skinny woman physique is idolized in the media. And a lot of men are attracted to that look. I think the male population on this site is unique in that a bit of bulk is actually appreciated.
