Question, every single viking in history was strictly from Nordic descent?

because according to this, there were black Vikings.

http://www.africaresource.com/rasta/sesostris-the-great-the-egyptian-hercules/the-bla-maors-the-black-vikings-and-the-black-danes-compiled-by-invasion2012/

So why is the race only white?
I will watch the movie and I will hopefully enjoy it AND I do think there should be more black representation in movies and TV. This applies to all races!

But this link about black Vikings is pure bullshit!

This paragraph from that link is so full of fail

“The Irish annalists were a lesson to all with their division of Norse invaders into White Foreigners, Norwegians (Finn-gaill), and Black Foreigners, Danes (Dubh-gaill), but it was a lesson no one heeded; nor do we know why they distinguished them by colour”

Finn is NOT white it means FAIR

Dubh is DARK OR BLACK.

Finn-gaill would typically mean fair haired foreigners (Norway) and Dubh-gaill would mean dark haired foreigners (Denmark). Its so simple when you take it in the context of our traditions.

“Prince of Maine Mor(moor) was accompanied by his father Eochaidh, and his two sons Breasal and Amlaff.” Eochaid mac Run, known in English simply as Eochaid, was king of the Picts from 878 to 889"

Mor is NOT Moor as in the North African Moors e.g. Othello but simply mean BIG. Sliabh Mor means big mountain. Anyway the Picts were a Scottish Tribe in Northern most Scotland so logically speaking they would be whiter than white, THERE IS NO SUN UP THERE! Even if there were a black King up in Northern most Scotland how in Gods name did he get up there? The fucking Romans wouldnt even go up there. They even built Hadrians Walls to keep these crazy bastards at arms length!

FYI…

In Irish, black people are ‘duine gorm’, which literally means blue people!

White people are ‘banach’ or ‘duine geal’, which means light people

Fear Dubh is the devil or ‘black man’ and has nothing to do with race!

No one is either pure black, white or ‘blue’ so I think this can makes some sort of sense.

The way I read that, they were AGREEING with you. They were saying that previous annalists had used the word “white” as a descriptive term and that they were incorrect.

I am all for intelligent discussion here…but seeing as one guy posted a racist blog in defense, I am not sure that can happen.

HAHAHA There were NEVER black vikings. It is amazing you would think that is true for one second.

No racism about it, that just isn’t true. The closest possible thing to black vikings would be the vikings bastard children after raping and pillaging a Black Irish village off the shores of Ireland or something, but those little bastard would have very light skin, freckles and all.

However your coming across as saying that race is the only issue that must not change. The god we are talking about was known as a god that enjoyed wondering around the earth. If he is wondering thru now in modern day NY why not pic a dif race. You want a drawn out explanation as to why is this. I’m saying its such a small thing for a Marvel Comicbook god to do that why should he explain at all.

And the guy had 9 mothers damn he could be anything he wants (Heimdal, why are you black", “whats it to you…wandering china next”)
What a prick thing to say, make fallacious arguments against and then tell me I’ve put “way too much” thought into this when it starts to look bad for you.

Never ONCE did I say race was the only issue I don’t want changed, you’re straw-manning me. At the end of the day I’m assuming the most likely answer (this being a ploy) while YOUR the one with some unbacked assumption of the director going out of his way to higher a black guy to play Heimdall in order to subtly and arbitrarily assert that these gods can change their form by having ONE god do it ONCE off screen and before the events of the movie.
How out of his way was it? The man is a great actor and is BRITISH so his accent will fall in line with the “Fake Euro” accents the rest of the cast is using. This is also a minor part and I doubt the man will be on screen long enough for any of this to matter much.

What 460 is saying is that you are asking why he turned black when we are asking you why there needs to be a reason. The real question is why would an ancient GOD choose to be white in today’s era. That makes little sense unless that GOD is racist.

The world is a tad too mixed today for that because this is NOT a history lesson. This is MARVEL comics’ version of these characters…and they changed quite a fucking bit from strict Norse Mythology.

The question again is why race matters so much and not all of the other changes.
First, he’s not a great actor. He’s a decent actor. Nothing exceptional. Second, the character is not a universal God, he is a NORSE GOD, of Nordic descent. And why would a God’s choosing to be white be racist? If he chose to be black, or Indonesian would that be racist too? That line doesn’t make a whole lot of sense and is kind of offensive.
Offensive? If Loki can fucking change from a man to a woman, then their look is BY CHOICE.

Of Nordic descent? They are NOT HUMAN. What race was Odin’s father and his father before that? What if Odin’s great grandfather was black?

Question, what “descent” is the Christian God? I see a white hand coming out of some clouds touching Adam’s in old paintings but Morgan Freeman played him in a movie.
You didn’t answer my question. You said that if a God chose to be white that would be racist. Why?
?

If God literally said, “I will avoid ever being any other “race””, then yes, that would be racist. If he just happened to choose “white” today, then no, it would not be.

People assuming that Norse Gods would choose to stay white makes little sense in today’s world.

Not to mention that there were black people on that part of the world very active in that history. they were Vikings so why would it be offensive or unbelievable for them to choose to be black for a while?

Why would GOD be white over any other color?
All the characters in Thor except one Asian dude are ALL WHITE, this is based off of a COMIC BOOK where ALl THE CHARACTERS ARE WHITE. Damn I’m Hispanic and you don’t here getting pissed because there aren’t any mexicans in Asgard.
They may be Mexican. I am part Mexican and am light skinned with light brown hair, and green eyes. I have family that was born and raised in Mexico and are whiter than the guy playing thor. Mexican is a nationality not race. This was a sort of a hijack but, I get tired when people expect everyone who is mexican/latino to look like George Lopez.

Post references or quit typing so much. You will have to excuse me if I don’t use YOU as a trusted source of information regarding this topic.

You would think blacks were completely silent or invisible throughout history before making peanut butter listening to some of you.

To my knowledge, there is still debate. But hey, clearly you were there.

You want proof that here were no Nubians in dragonships?

Um, ok…

On the other hand Byzantine emperors had Viking bodyguards so if some people went all the way down, some might have went all the way up, but I think if a bunch of black people with horned helmets had burned down Paris we would know.

a debate about the presence of africans in scandinavia circa 1000 AD ?
really ?
seriously ?

I find it funny that people are looking for “truth” and “accuracy” from a MOVIE that comes from a COMIC BOOK, where the characters are borrowed from Norse MYTHOLOGY.

But black Vikings?

Buzzkill.

My question is

Had this movie not cast a black man as Heimdallr would people have argued about a black Aesir? My guess would be no people on both sides of the color spectrum would have laughed and said WHAT?

Im mean really… Its not about whose black or white or yellow or purple its that Hollywood like to be assclowns and play games and create controversy. Umm in the Edda he is called the “white god”. How odd that they would make him black. Why not Balder, why not Bragi, or Frigg?

Yes this is a comic book, yes this is fantasy, but really? I mean really? Why the fuck would you change a important aspect of not only the comic book but one based in mythology?

I would like to see what people in Norse paganism, Asatru, Forn sed have to say about this? Are any of you on the forum?

True

One thing is for sure is that the Vikings were serious slave traders throughout the known world, maybe even North America!

Dublin was the biggest slave trading post in Europe at the time with many people from all over changing hands.

And considering slaves were accepted into the community and were taken as wives by Vikings it would make perfect sense that there were some racial variations on what is commonly known as a Viking today.

The character who is ASIAN is ASIAN in the FUCKING COMIC. Holy FUCK IN THE FUCKING COMIC THE BLACK GUY IS WHITE. MOTHER FUCKER it’s not hard to understand. If Black Panther was a lesbian Albino white chick you would be annoyed. Why because He is a black prince from AFRICA and everyone in his tribe is BLACK. I would be just as annoyed if they fucked up the characters in a black panther or luke cage movie. If Thor had black hair I would be just as annoyed. God your one of those minorities that wants to complain about everything. You make the rest of us look bad. So shut the fuck up and get over it. Hollywood only did this because people like you would start throwing bitch fits that there were no Black Norse Gods in the movie. The comic book clearly states and shows all the characters skin color costumes powers etc…

It’s been said before, but if we’re going to complain about the movie staying true to the Norse mythology then I will be boycotting it because I don’t think that Thor was ever known for facing off against an automated suit of armor.

I could be wrong, but I think that the comics took some liberties with the myths. I also think that the Norse gods probably weren’t black… but at the same time they probably didn’t join superhero teams or fly around in modern times.

I’m sure they changed a couple of other things from the comic books that are probably more important to the story than skin color. Why care one way or the other?

WTF? Why would I throw a bitch fit because they didn’t make a Norse God black? I wouldn’t care one way or the other. What written here makes you think I am pushing for them to just randomly make people black? I simply asked WHY characters that were not created with their race being a factor in their creation had to stay “white”, like Spiderman.

I didn’t write the fucking script and your use of profanity is hilarious.

None of us know what this movie will be like. None of us know WHY they picked this man to play that character.

It’s a fucking comic book. Get it? COMIC BOOK. Not a fucking history lesson. This is like raising hell because they had giants and minimal body armor in 300. The only ones throwing a “bitch fit” seems to be you and others who are acting the same.

I was going to see this movie long before I even heard of this…which was roughly a few days ago.

In other words, your little rant here was pretty weak.

Wait…so Asians are ok, but no Blacks or Mexicans?

LOL at “logic”.

No you stooge you have literally made no sense in your posts and you are arguing about something you clearly know nothing about. Yes it’s a comic and what the movie should not stick to the source? It should especially in this case where the characters are clearly defined.

I made no sense? Why do you think Spawn was mentioned? How many times have black characters turned white in movies? Why is this so shocking when done in reverse?

While I may prefer most media stay true to the original concept, I for one wouldn’t be throwing a hissy fit about it like this unless it was a MAIN CHARACTER and the change destroyed the entire concept of that character. Otherwise, what the fuck is wrong with you and others? It’s a movie.
